Debts No Honest Man Can Pay

I hadn’t listed to any sort of music on radio - terrestrial, satellite, or streaming - for over 20 years when a friend sent me a link to Greenberg’s excellent DNHMCP. (Thanks, pal. I owe you a solid.) and listening to the show I have been reminded of how great radio done right can be. It’s not just that it’s right in my musical wheelhouse, or one of them anyway, and it’s that the tunes Greenberg spins are top notch, a well thought out a mix of the familiar and new that has helped my old man ears discover new, sounds that I like or even love. And of course there’s a tuner to that doesn’t land, but every so often there’s one that might change my life a little bit for the better. That’s radio magic. Makes Greenberg a sort of magician. If you want to slap a label on the show, it mines a vaguely Americana vein. He features past favorites, but the show exist in the now. I may well have missed the show where he spins “Backbeat Freestyle” or the Throat Singers of Tuva or Peggy Lee. If he does drop the needle on any of those, I’m sure they will be well framed by other complementary sounds, and supported by a brief, but informative and entertaining anecdote. If you love music you love DNHMCP.

I used to always say that Greenberg would make me mad because everytime I listened to his show, I would end up spending money on new music. This show is an amazing dive into musicology. I listened to this show when it was a broadcast radio show. Now that it is a podcast I find myself loving it even more because I can listen at different times. And listen more than once. Brace yourself for a wild ride through ever genera of music you can imagine (except maybe Minimalists like Phillip Glass. Hehe). Highly recommended!!!!
