    Episode 21: The Realities of COVID

    Guest: Jamie Anaya Today, I talk with Jamie Anaya… Respiratory Therapist Badass. Jamie has spent most of 2020 working in the COVID unit at a local hospital and has spent most of this time treating dying COVID patients. Today Jamie shares her experience of working fourteen hour days, four to five days a week, in full PPE as well as what the reality of COVID looks like from a healthcare worker perspective. She also shares what the death of COVID patients has been like for her and the sad reality that most of these patients die without any of their loved ones by their side. CAUTION: This episode is sure to pull on your heart strings and might even make you cry. I know I had a hard time not choking up as Jamie shared these experiences with me… which I recorded for you! COVID is real and the effects of it are not only felt by the infected patients, but also the healthcare heroes who are trying to save them.     The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is the driving force behind nearly every advance in the fire and emergency services in the 21st century. The IAFF represents more than 320,000 full-time professional fire fighters and paramedics in more than 3,500 affiliates. IAFF members protect more than 85 percent of the population in communities throughout the United States and Canada. Today, I talk with Eutemio Ortiz who is the President of IAFF Local 4366 and Eutemio has been in the Fire Service for 11 years. Eutemio shares the importance of being part of a Union membership as well as how this membership contributes positively to the community. Eutemio explains what role the Union plays within a Fire Department and how Local 4366 contributes to the betterment of the community, both locally and nationally, aside from responding to 911 calls.     EmergeandSee Podcast Episode 15: Respiratory Therapy

    Respiratory Therapists (RT’s) are often mistaken for nurses or CNA’s but these healthcare professionals are in a class all their own. RT’s are a licensed profession that requires several years of training to become the “Airway Masters”. Often, this profession doesn’t get the credit it deserves when it come to being part of the Life Saving Team. Today’s guest, Jessica Barrera, has been a RT for over 7 years and she talks to us about this profession and why she chose this profession in all of healthcare. She also shares a couple patient stories that really touched her, not only as a professional but also as a human.
