Lighting a Dark Alley

Often times, I find myself talking to friends and family members and notice that they struggle to understand what it is I do as an engineer. In some cases, I've heard people telling me that technological advancements are akin to a dark alleyway. And with no proper light source, I can see how it can be rather hard to understand it completely. But one doesn't need to possess a degree in engineering to appreciate technological advancements.
