Hogwood From 'Sinners' Is Delicious w/ Dave Maldonado

Delishees, we have Hogwood from the Academy Award winning horror hit “Sinners”!! Feast on food, pop culture, and lifestyle with Jon & actor Dave Maldonado! We start off with Dave’s theatre and indie film era in his native Louisiana, what it means to have a spouse who’s NOT in show business, filming “run, hide, fight” training videos in Houston TX, and if Dave subscribes to the Marlon Brando/Daniel Day Lewis/Heath Ledger acting method.  Of course, Jon and Dave deep dive into his “Sinners” experience: what’s arguably Hogwood’s most memorable scene, getting shot by Smoke at the end, filming in the brutal Louisiana summer heat, how Dave felt hearing people in the movie theater root against his character, auditioning for director Ryan Coogler, the iconic song in the movie that he ALMOST sang, the record Oscar noms and wins for Coogler and Michael B. Jordan, Hogwood’s improvised moment that made the final cut, the “hurry up and wait” pace of a film set, overthinking audition results, why Dave was almost thrown out by security at the NYC premiere, his daughter’s reaction to Dave not knowing Letterboxd & making room for Chris Rock at the premiere! Jon also asks Dave about working with established actors Bryan Cranston, Stephen Graham, JK Simmons, Tom Hanks, Chris Pratt, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Kurt Russell on TV & film projects like “Your Honor”, “Trumbo”, “National Champions”, “Tomorrow War”, & “Greyhound”. They get into not judging unlikeable characters and the advice Dave gave to David Koechner from “Anchorman”.  Dave shares his love of his wife’s chicken and sausage spaghetti, playing the “Movie Grid” game with his daughter, his reaction to Kane Parsons’ Gen Z horror hit “Backrooms”, how he was spared from watching “Evil Dead Burn”, if Stephen Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” lives up to the hype, how anxiety and substance use and imposter syndrome has impacted his mental health, the smallest residual check he’s received for his acting work, and Dave celebrates a sobriety milestone!  ____________________________________________________________ Follow/like/subscribe/share, leave a review on Apple Podcasts & a five star rating on Spotify!
