He Coached a World Champion… Now He’s Building Something New | Geoff Wightman & Team RG

From coaching his son Jake Wightman to world 1500m gold to launching an exciting new middle-distance training group, Geoff Wightman is embarking on a fresh chapter in his coaching career. In this episode of the Trackstaa Podcast, Rich Morrell sits down with the former international marathon runner, renowned stadium announcer and world championship winning coach to discuss the launch of Team RG. It all started with a social media post. More than 60 athletes expressed an interest in joining, but only four made the cut: Pippa Roessler, Lucy Austin, Annie Testar and Ella Fryer.  Geoff explains why these four? Why he’s launching a new group now? And what he believe’s it takes to develop the next generation of elite middle-distance runners? Geoff opens up about his coaching philosophies, the influences that have shaped his approach, what makes Team RG different from other UK training groups and why his passion for developing athletes remains as strong as ever. We also explore his ambitions for the group and the challenges of balancing elite-level aspirations with everyday commitments. A fascinating insight into the mind of a world championship-winning coach and an exciting new project in British middle-distance running.
