Episode 21 : The Hidden Curriculum ft Dango - Adulting, Student Activism and the Evolution of Self at University

In this weeks episode, Dango joins me to discuss the hidden curriculum: adulting, financial management, mental health, student activism, class privilege and personal growth in the university space. We discuss how the university experience can be a process of socialisation into white maleness, and how the exposure to values and lifestyles different from the ones we've grown up with can pose a challenge to our growth. As always tune in on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and anywhere else you get your podcasts. Sending you all love and light,  and see you next week! #thehiddencurriculum #adulting #unilife #studentactivism #mentalhealth #personalgrowth #uct #friendship #socialisation #financialmanagement

Astrology, Tarot and Self Discovery : Why being a Sagittarius is not an excuse for your bad behaviour (kind of)

In this weeks episode Linda, the host of @merlotnme joins me to discuss how astrology, tarot and other esoteric practices have been catapulted into the mainstream. We reflect on how astrology can be used as a tool for self-reflection and understanding. On the other hand, consider how it has become a way for people to avoid accountability when they use their placements to excuse their flaws or bad behaviour. Tune in for a lively discussion on alternative spiritual beliefs in a postcolonial dystopia and how in the information age, data and technology are becoming the new gods. Linda is a recent NYU grad with a degree in Integrated Design Media. Her passion for art, technology and wine inspired her to create her podcast @merlotnme a comedy interview podcast about young adult life over a glass of wine. Head over to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts to listen to my feature on @merlotnme, where we discuss drinking culture in New York, Cape Town and Nairobi! As always thanks for tuning in!

Toxic Families, Dysfunction and Narcissistic Parenting : Part 2

Building on last week's conversation, Laura and I discuss how growing up with a narcissistic parent or parents has shaped our identity, self-expression, and ways of relating with the world. We also trace the incidents or behaviour that led us to conclude that our parents could have narcissistic tendencies or traits. As awareness about mental illness is a recent phenomenon, we reflect on how undiagnosed conditions play out as narcissism;  and how victims of narcissistic abuse pick up traits and behaviour from their abusers. Feel free to chime in with your experience on our Instagram account @splittinghairskenya!

Toxic Families, Dysfunction and Narcisstic Parenting : Part 1

Hello May! It's been a while since our last episode, so this week starts with a bang as Laura and Pauline unpack Toxic Families and Narcissistic Parenting.  We get in touch with our inner child and examine how familial dysfunctionality has affected our self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. We also delve into the impact of colonialism and structural violence on the African family and social relations. Understanding toxic family patterns from a systemic perspective allows us to discuss how generational trauma perpetuates the cycle of toxicity. For the second part of this incredible series, join us next week as we discuss narcissism, personality disorders and how they perpetuate abusive parent-child relations. Laura is a fourth-year student wrapping up her degree at the University of Toronto in Digital Enterprise Management. She is passionate about the socio-economic empowerment of women, especially those experiencing gender-based violence. Her own healing journey has taught her how domestic unrest can cause future maladaptive behaviours & life decisions. But through healing, she believes that we can unlearn those patterns.  Check out her social media accounts  IG: @more.nonsense.pls TikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeppA7GY/
