The History of Credit Cards (Encore)

One of the most ubiquitous forms of payment today is credit cards. The odds are good that you have one, and most probably have one on your person right now.
But how did it come about that you could pay for something by just giving someone a piece of plastic and who exactly came up with this idea?
Learn more about credit cards, where they came from and how they work, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

    The Dumbest Game Ever Played

    The Dumbest Game Ever Played

Almost thirty years ago, a rather unremarkable soccer match in an unremarkable tournament became the stuff of legend.
Had it not been for a confluence of events and rules that all came together at one point in one game, it never would have happened.
The result was something totally ridiculous that had never happened before or since.
Learn more about the 1994 match between Grenada and Barbados, and the dumbest game in history, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

    The Red Baron

    The Red Baron

The First World War saw many innovations in warfare. Probably the most significant was the introduction of aircraft.
The first military pilots didn’t really know what they were doing. There was no rulebook about how to fight with other aircraft.
However, one pilot mastered the art of aerial and terrorized the allies over skies on the western front.
Learn more about Manfred von Richthofen, aka the Red Barron, the greatest ace of World War I, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

    The Space Shuttle

    The Space Shuttle

Soon after the start of the space race, a major problem with space flight became obvious: it was really expensive.
The high cost of space flight was in large part due to the fact that every rocket and spacecraft was expendable. Every trip meant a new rocket and a new vehicle.
To solve this problem, in the early 1970s, the United States launched a new program to create a reusable spacecraft.
Learn more about the rise and fall of the Space Transportation System, aka the Space Shuttle on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

    Prime Numbers (Encore)

    Prime Numbers (Encore)

Prime numbers are considered to be the building blocks of mathematics. Every natural number can be broken down into the constituent prime numbers that make it up.
Prime numbers have been known since antiquity and they are one of the most simple aspects of mathematics to understand, yet they remain at the center of some of the most puzzling problems in mathematics.
Learn more about prime numbers, what we know about them, and what we don’t know, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

My new favorite podcast

Gary Arndt’s history podcast is a must-listen, the new king of 15 minute deep dives on a daily subject. The writing and research are superb and Gary is just plain PLEASANT to listen to every day. When he touches on areas of obscure history that I know well, I’m waiting to see if I can find a small error to crow about and that’s a very rare event (always acknowledged by Gary with humility and appreciation). Topics include something for every taste and Gary Arndt has the rare talent of making you genuinely interested in a topic you would never have thought would appeal to you. Best of all, I’ve been listening to Gary every day for almost 2 years and I have no idea who he voted for or what his political views could be. He deserves 5-stars just for that.

Part of my morning routine

I have been part of the complete(ionist) club for the the last few months. I wake up in the morning crazing the podcast and I’m never disappointed, even on reruns. My one suggestion is when referencing another podcast from before, can you please reference the episode number please? Your bag log is large enough now that having a number to reference would be significantly easier if I wanted to go back and listen to the referenced work. Thanks for all of your hard work!

Fantastic Podcast

I found this podcast last summer and became a completionist member within about 8 weeks. When I am recommending this to my friends I say “what other podcast covers Ancient Rome, uranium, and the Louvre all in one week”. Gary is full of great information and covers it all in about 10 minutes. I like how Gary will point out his corrections…. He already mentioned his Bill Buckner brain fart, but in the same episode he said a statue of William Pitt was on top of Philadelphia City Hall, when we know it is William Penn. However todays error was unforced. If you know that Nixon appointed Ford to be VP, how could you miss that Ford appointed Rockefeller once he took over after the Nixon resignation. Keep it up, it is a great podcast.
