Bone Density & Menopause: The TRUTH About Estrogen, DEXA Scans & Osteoporosis With Cindy Dupuie

Bone health is one of those midlife topics that many women don't think about until a DEXA scan shows osteopenia or osteoporosis — and suddenly they're handed a prescription, told to take calcium, and left wondering, "Wait… is that it?" In this episode of Living Life Naturally, Lynne is joined by functional medicine nutritionist Cindy Dupuie for an eye-opening conversation about bone density, menopause, estrogen, DEXA scans, osteoporosis medications, and why women need to become stronger advocates for their own health. Cindy brings more than 20 years of experience in functional medicine, nutrition, digestion, thyroid health, lab work, and menopausal support. Together, Lynne and Cindy discuss why waiting until age 65 for a first DEXA scan may not be ideal for many women, especially because significant bone loss often occurs in the first decade after menopause. They also explore important risk factors for early bone loss, including family history, low body fat during key bone-building years, eating disorders, intense athletic activity, long-term steroid use, low vitamin D, and other pieces that are often overlooked. In This Episode: Lynne and Cindy talk about why bone density matters so much for long-term independence, mobility, and quality of life. They also discuss why Cindy recommends women consider getting a baseline DEXA scan earlier than the standard recommendation, especially if they have risk factors. You'll also hear about two important bone-turnover markers — CTX and P1NP — and how they may help provide a clearer picture of whether bone loss is being driven more by breakdown or lack of formation. Cindy shares why resistance training, muscle maintenance, and certain types of movement can be so important for bone strength. Lynne and Cindy also discuss estrogen's role in bone protection, why the Women's Health Initiative study created lasting confusion around hormone therapy, and why individualized conversations with a knowledgeable provider matter. This episode also includes an honest conversation about osteoporosis medications, including bisphosphonates, how they work, why they're commonly prescribed, and why women may want to ask informed questions about risks, benefits, duration of use, and monitoring before making decisions. Most importantly, this conversation is a reminder that you deserve more than rushed answers. You deserve to understand your options, ask better questions, and participate fully in decisions about your bone health, hormones, and future mobility.  🗝️Key Takeaways: 🗝️ 🔑 Bone health is deeply connected to independence, mobility, and quality of life. 🔑 Significant bone loss can occur after menopause, so earlier assessment may be worth discussing with your provider. 🔑Risk factors such as family history, low vitamin D, eating disorders, long-term steroid use, and low body fat can matter. 🔑CTX and P1NP are bone-turnover markers that may provide additional insight into bone breakdown and formation. 🔑Resistance training and muscle maintenance are essential for supporting bone strength. 🔑Estrogen plays an important role in helping slow bone loss. 🔑Osteoporosis medications can be helpful for some women, but it's important to understand risks, benefits, duration, and alternatives.   🔑Women deserve individualized care and the opportunity to ask informed questions.  Connect with Cindy Dupuie: Website: https://alivingbalance.net Instagram: https://instagram.com/cindy_dupuie YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@alivingbalance Free Resource from Cindy Dupuie: Lab Checklist for Ladies in the Pause Years: https://mailchi.mp/ec838eef0e74/lab-checklist Cindy's Course: Women of A Certain Age — a course designed to help women become an advocate for yourself, with education, community, and weekly time with Cindy: https://alivingbalance.net/course/ Connect with Lynne: Website: https://holistic-healthandwellness.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/holistichealthandwellnessllc The Energized Healthy Women's Club: https://www.facebook.com/groups/energized.healthy.women Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lynnewadsworth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lynnewadsworth If you want a gentle chat about next steps, schedule time with Lynne here: https://calendly.com/lynnewadsworth/30min Did You Enjoy the Podcast? Why You Can't Lose Weight in Perimenopause (It's Your Hormones) With Morgana Lakatos-Hayward

If you feel like your body changed overnight in perimenopause — especially around your belly, energy, cravings, sleep, and weight — you are not imagining it. In this episode of Living Life Naturally, Lynne is joined by Morgana Lakatos-Hayward, Certified Menopause Health Coach, bestselling author, and former 2x World Champion Latin Dancer, for a real and refreshing conversation about why weight loss often feels harder in midlife. And spoiler alert: it's not because you're lazy, broken, or "just need more willpower." 💜 Show Notes: In today's episode, Lynne talks with Morgana Lakatos-Hayward about the hormonal shifts that can make weight loss feel so frustrating during perimenopause and menopause. Morgana shares her personal journey from the world of competitive Latin dance, body shaming, and extreme fad dieting to becoming a certified menopause health coach. After developing adenomyosis and turning to holistic health, she became passionate about helping women understand their bodies instead of fighting against them. Together, Lynne and Morgana explore why the old "eat less and move more" approach often doesn't work the same way in midlife — and why hormones like insulin, cortisol, and estrogen can play such a big role in stubborn weight gain, especially around the middle. They also talk about blood sugar balance, sleep, strength training, stress, diet culture, GLP-1 medications, cravings, and why supporting your body's foundations may be far more effective than hopping on the next restrictive plan. This is a great episode for any woman who has thought, "I'm doing everything right… so why is my body not responding?" What You'll Learn in This Episode In this conversation, Lynne and Morgana discuss: ·         Why midlife weight gain is often connected to hormones ·         The role of insulin resistance and blood sugar swings ·         How chronic stress and cortisol may contribute to belly fat ·         Why estrogen fluctuations can affect fat storage in perimenopause ·         Why skipping meals or under-eating may backfire ·         The importance of protein, strength training, and muscle mass ·         Why sleep is one of the most powerful "biohacks" for hormone health ·         How diet culture keeps women stuck in guilt, shame, and restriction ·         Why GLP-1 medications still require strong health foundations ·         Simple ways to begin supporting your body instead of battling it Guest Bio Morgana Lakatos-Hayward is a former 2x World Champion Latin Dancer who experienced body shaming and spent a decade caught in extreme fad dieting. After developing adenomyosis, she turned to holistic health and eventually became a certified menopause health coach and bestselling author. The TRUTH About Supplements for Perimenopause & Menopause

Are you confused about which supplements you actually need in midlife — and which ones are just expensive clutter in your cabinet? You're not alone. Between magnesium, vitamin D, collagen, omega-3s, probiotics, protein powders, creatine, hormone balance blends, and every "must-have" bottle on the shelf, it can feel overwhelming fast. And when you're navigating perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, cravings, mood changes, weight shifts, joint aches, stress, or feeling like your body has changed the rules without telling you, it's easy to wonder if the right supplement might be the missing piece. In this episode of Living Life Naturally, Lynne Wadsworth, Board-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, breaks down supplements in a practical, conversational, and grounded way for women in midlife. We'll talk about what supplements can do, what they can't do, why "more" is not always better, and why supplements should support the foundation — not replace nourishing food, protein, fiber, hydration, sleep, stress support, blood sugar balance, movement, and listening to your body. Lynne also walks through some of the most commonly discussed supplements for women over 40, including vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, omega-3s, B vitamins, iron, protein powders, probiotics, collagen, creatine, and popular hormone-support blends. You'll learn why some supplements may be helpful, why others should be personalized, and why testing, quality, medication interactions, and your own health history matter. This episode is not about building a supplement cabinet that requires a spreadsheet and a second mortgage. It's about gaining clarity, becoming a more informed consumer, and learning how to support your body with wisdom instead of chasing every trend. If you've ever stood in the supplement aisle wondering what you actually need, this conversation will help you take a calmer, more confident next step. The Truth About Thyroid, Adrenals, and Hormonal Imbalance

Feeling tired, wired, foggy, puffy, anxious, or just not like yourself in midlife? Your thyroid, adrenals, and hormones may all be part of the bigger picture. In this Tea & Truth episode, we're putting the pieces together and talking about how thyroid function, cortisol, stress, blood sugar, sleep, and menopause hormone changes can overlap — and why your symptoms deserve a deeper conversation, not dismissal. So many women in midlife are told their labs look "normal," yet they still feel exhausted, foggy, anxious, inflamed, stuck with weight changes, or completely unlike themselves. In this episode of Tea & Truth: Honest Talk for Women in Midlife, we're talking about the truth about thyroid, adrenals, and hormonal imbalance — and why these systems are so deeply connected. Your thyroid influences energy, metabolism, temperature, digestion, mood, and more. Your adrenal glands help regulate your stress response through hormones such as cortisol. And during perimenopause and menopause, shifting estrogen and progesterone can make stress, sleep disruption, blood sugar swings, and fatigue feel even more intense. This episode is a practical, honest, and encouraging look at the midlife hormone puzzle — without fear, extremes, or overwhelm. In this episode, we talk about: Why thyroid symptoms and menopause symptoms can overlap How chronic stress can affect energy, sleep, cravings, and resilience Why cortisol is not "bad," but your rhythm matters The connection between blood sugar, cravings, fatigue, and mood Why midlife symptoms often have more than one root contributor What questions to ask your provider if you feel dismissed Gentle lifestyle supports for thyroid, adrenal, and hormone balance Why your symptoms are information — not something to ignore Free Companion Handout I created a free companion handout for this episode called The Midlife Hormone Clues Checklist: What Your Thyroid, Adrenals & Hormones May Be Trying to Tell You. Bio-Identical Hormones: The Truth Women in Midlife Need to Hear

Are bio-identical hormones safe — and are they right for you? In this Tea & Truth episode, we're having an honest, grounded conversation about bio-identical hormones, hormone therapy, menopause symptoms, and the questions women in midlife deserve to ask before making decisions about their bodies. We'll talk about what "bio-identical" really means, why it doesn't automatically mean safer or risk-free, the difference between FDA-approved and custom-compounded hormone therapy, and why your personal history, symptoms, timing, and risk factors all matter. You'll also hear a little of my own story — including why bio-identical hormones didn't work well for me years ago, and why I still believe every woman deserves an informed, individualized conversation with a qualified provider. Plus, I created a free companion guide for this episode: Hormone Therapy Questions to Ask Your Provider: A Midlife Woman's Conversation Guide, to help you organize your symptoms, clarify your questions, and walk into your appointment feeling more prepared — not pressured. Bio-identical hormones can sound like the perfect "natural" answer to midlife symptoms — especially when you're exhausted, not sleeping, dealing with hot flashes, feeling foggy, anxious, dry, achy, moody, or simply not like yourself. But the truth is, the conversation is more nuanced than that. In this episode of Tea & Truth: Honest Talk for Women in Midlife, we're unpacking what bio-identical hormones really are, what women need to understand about safety, and why "natural" doesn't automatically mean risk-free. This is not an episode about telling every woman to use hormone therapy. And it's not an episode about telling every woman to avoid it. Instead, this is a grounded, empowering conversation to help you better understand your options, ask better questions, and advocate for yourself with more confidence. Current menopause guidance recognizes hormone therapy as an effective treatment for bothersome hot flashes and night sweats, and notes that for many healthy symptomatic women under age 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefit-risk ratio may be favorable when treatment is individualized. At the same time, professional organizations urge caution around custom-compounded bio-identical hormone therapy, especially when FDA-approved options are available, because claims of superior safety or effectiveness are not well supported. In this episode, I'm also sharing my personal experience with trying bio-identical hormones years ago — and why they didn't work well for me at that time. But I also share why that experience doesn't mean hormone therapy is wrong for every woman, especially since the conversation around dosing, timing, delivery methods, and individualized care has changed significantly. Because here's the truth: Your body deserves more than fear. Your body deserves more than marketing. Your body deserves thoughtful, informed, personalized care. In this episode, we talk about: ✨ What bio-identical hormones actually are ✨ Why bio-identical does not automatically mean compounded ✨ The difference between FDA-approved and custom-compounded hormone therapy ✨ Why "natural" does not always mean risk-free ✨ Why timing, dose, route, and personal history matter ✨ Why some women may need extra caution with hormone therapy ✨ Questions to ask your healthcare provider before deciding ✨ Why holistic foundations still matter whether you use hormones or not ✨ How to advocate for yourself without fear, pressure, or confusion Listen in to learn: 💜 Why bio-identical hormones are often misunderstood 💜 What safety really depends on when it comes to hormone therapy 💜 Why your symptoms, history, and risk factors all belong in the conversation 💜 What questions to ask if your provider recommends compounded hormones 💜 How to think about hormone therapy as one possible tool — not the whole picture 💜 Why your voice and lived experience matter in midlife healthcare Free Companion Guide To go along with this episode, I created a free PDF guide called: Hormone Therapy Questions to Ask Your Provider: A Midlife Woman's Conversation Guide This guide is designed to help you gather your thoughts before an appointment, organize your symptoms, and ask practical questions about hormone therapy, bio-identical hormones, compounded options, testing, lifestyle foundations, and next steps. Download the guide here Important Reminder This episode is for education and encouragement only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Your Doctor Is Wrong About Perimenopause — Here's the Truth

Have you been told your labs are "normal" even though you feel exhausted, anxious, foggy, sleepless, or completely unlike yourself? In this Tea & Truth episode, Lynne Wadsworth, Board-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, shares why perimenopause symptoms can be real even when standard bloodwork looks fine — and how to begin advocating for yourself with more confidence, clarity, and calm. Have you ever walked out of a doctor's office feeling more confused than when you walked in? Maybe you explained the exhaustion, the anxiety, the sleepless nights, the weight changes, the brain fog, the mood swings, or the feeling that you just don't feel like yourself anymore — only to be told, "Everything looks normal." If that has happened to you, this episode is for you. In today's Tea & Truth conversation, we're talking about one of the most frustrating experiences for women in midlife: having very real symptoms while being told that nothing is technically wrong. This episode is not about blaming doctors. Many practitioners are caring, skilled, and doing their best. But it is about recognizing that many women in perimenopause and menopause are still not being fully heard, especially when standard lab results don't reflect how they actually feel day to day. Perimenopause can be a time of significant hormonal fluctuation, and symptoms can show up long before a woman is officially in menopause. Standard hormone testing may not always capture the full picture because hormone levels can shift throughout the cycle and from day to day. That's why your symptoms, menstrual changes, sleep, mood, energy, stress levels, and lived experience all matter. In this episode, we'll talk about why "normal" labs don't always mean optimal wellness, what may be happening hormonally during perimenopause, why cortisol and stress can intensify symptoms, and how to prepare for a more productive conversation with your healthcare provider. You'll also learn simple, practical steps you can begin taking now to support your body naturally — including symptom tracking, blood sugar support, sleep rhythms, nervous system care, and gentle liver and digestive support. Most of all, this episode is a reminder that your symptoms are real, your body is communicating, and you deserve care that looks at the whole picture. In This Episode, We Talk About Why so many women feel dismissed in perimenopause and menopause Why "normal" labs don't always tell the whole story How hormone fluctuations can affect sleep, mood, energy, weight, and clarity Why symptoms and cycle changes matter What questions to ask your doctor How stress and cortisol can affect midlife hormone balance Simple ways to support blood sugar, sleep, digestion, and the nervous system Why self-advocacy is an important part of midlife wellness Gentle Medical Disclaimer for Show Notes This episode is for education and support only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace personalized medical care.
