    Trial of Fire: The Wilmington Ten

    In the summer of 1971, Wilmington, North Carolina, became the center of a struggle over race, education, and justice. What began as student protests against segregation and unequal treatment would soon erupt into violence, arrests, and one of the most controversial trials in modern North Carolina history. At the center of the story were ten Black activists, students, and community leaders who became known as the Wilmington Ten. Accused of conspiracy and arson, they were convicted and sentenced to decades in prison. But questions surrounding their trial, the evidence used against them, and the fairness of the proceedings would refuse to disappear. In this episode of The History Book, Jacob explores the events that led to the Wilmington Ten, the violence that engulfed Wilmington, the controversial trial that followed, and the long fight to overturn their convictions. This is a story about protest, prejudice, perseverance, and the pursuit of justice—and about ten people whose names became a symbol of a system that did not always live up to the ideals it claimed to protect.

Her story would lead to one of the most famous trials in colonial American history—and ultimately force her from the community she called home.
