Cultivating Courage Through Crisis, with Dave Cornell

In this inspiring episode, Dave Cornell shares his powerful journey of overcoming lifelong fear through faith, resilience, and courage. After the economic downturn hit following the 2008 financial crisis, a series of challenging events unfolded for Dave, including he and his wife both losing their jobs, exhausting their savings, and ultimately losing their home. Through this period, Dave discovered how fear had silently dictated his choices since childhood. With the guidance of mentors and counselors placed in his path, he learned how to name his fears, release them, and step boldly into courage as a guide. This transformed his personal struggle into a successful speaking career and led him to author the book Cultivate Courage, which helps readers recognize and utilize the gifts God has given them. One of the key insights shared by Dave is that "you can have fear without courage, but you can't have courage without fear". This principle motivates us to examine unaddressed fears in our own lives—whether it is avoiding a difficult conversation with a loved one or facing deeper relational scars. No matter the circumstance, profound change and hidden blessings can emerge from crisis, leading Dave to remind us: "Never underestimate the value of a crisis". Listeners looking for practical ideas to address long-standing challenges and prevent future crises will find some guiding principles in this episode and in Dave’s writing. We encourage you to check out Dave's book or connect with him to bring his message to your community, workplace, school, or church. You can find more resources and embrace a life of courageous faith by visiting cultivatecourage.com. Rising from humble beginnings on Chicago’s South Side to become a top-performing pharmaceutical sales leader and multiple President’s Club award winner, her life took a dramatic turn at age 43 when she survived a life-threatening brain aneurysm. Guided by an unshakable faith, she chose to rebuild, push forward, and pursue the vision placed on her heart—ultimately stepping into entrepreneurship and creating SockTABs, an innovative solution that took her to ABC’s Shark Tank (see socktabs.com to learn more or check out Episode 709 on Hulu, 11/20/15). The Courage of a Mother, with Cindy Parseghian

The Courage of a Mother, with Cindy Parseghian Cindy Parseghian is actively shaping the future. In 1994, she and her husband Mike founded a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C), a genetic, cholesterol storage disorder that claimed the lives of three of their four children. The foundation joined forces with the University of Notre Dame in 2015, and together they fight daily to end this devastating disease. The Parseghian family was blessed with four children: Ara, Michael, Marcia, and Christa. Sadly, only the eldest, Ara, tested negative for the genetic disease. The diagnosis and subsequent loss of her three children brought Cindy indescribable pain, challenged her faith, and altered her life's trajectory. Just two months after receiving the diagnosis, Cindy established the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation. Since then, millions of dollars have been raised each year, fueling significant progress towards eradicating a disease that can affect the brain, nerves, liver, spleen, bone marrow and sometimes the lungs. Symptoms can hit children in a variety of debilitating ways, including losing the ability to walk, vision, hearing and speech loss, and repeated infections. Far too many young lives have ended too soon. But story is evolving. The foundation's work is now funding revolutionary research and providing hope to future parents who may face similar challenges. Recently, the FDA approved two therapies for NP-C patients which sometimes can take place over 5 -10 years as part of the drug trials. These children/patients are able to maintain their quality of life and appear to be living longer. In addition, more young adults are being diagnosed in their early 20s usually after experiencing some form of psychosis (they have a different genetic mutation that is associated with a late on-set form of NP-C.) All of these factors are adding up to a longer life span for NP-C patients and better news for families. Cindy's response to her tragedy is profoundly inspiring. She found purpose and strength amid intense grief and launched a foundation with a dedicated mission to help others, while always keeping her children's memories close to her heart. As you will hear in this warm and enlightening podcast conversation with Bill, Cindy expresses immense gratitude for everyone who has contributed to the cause and become part of the team to end NP-C. We encourage you to learn more about the foundation, the benefits of the research, and consider making a tax-deductible contribution. Making Gratitude a Way of Life, with Patrick Garry

The topic of gratitude will always be embedded in the mission of this podcast so it is fitting that in this episode it’s true power is explored with the award-winning author and speaker, Patrick Garry.  Patrick is a professor of law at the University of South Dakota and the Director of the Hagemann Center for Legal & Public Policy Research and earned his Ph.D. and J.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has published 13 non-fiction books, 8 novels and has been published in 139 scholarly articles focusing primarily on law, politics and religion. In addition, Patrick has been invited on several occasions to testify before Congress on legal and constitutional matters and he is a frequent speaker at Federalist Society sponsored events. However, of all his books and writings, The Power of Gratitude, is his most personal work and perhaps his finest literary achievement. As Patrick reflected on his parent’s lives, he saw that gratitude was more than just an emotion or a way to say thank you, but foundational to how they loved, served, and persevered through challenges. In other words, gratitude became a way of life for them, amplified virtues, and brought a deeper joy to every day and every experience. The life lesson they taught is that gratitude leads to finding God’s purpose for our lives. Listen in to learn more about how you can cultivate gratitude in your life and see the positive impact on your own mental and emotional well-being. You can order a copy of the Power of Gratitude on Amazon for additional insights, stories, and ways to foster satisfaction in your life. Enjoy the podcast here or watch it on YouTube.  Godspeed (God's Speed), my friends.

This special episode is again hosted by Matt's brother Bill and he is joined by sister Moira to discuss the foundation's goals and background along with a few other updates and family stories. Running Marathons to Make a Difference, with Mike Kloepfer

For many, running just one marathon is a life goal and puts you in a category with only .01% of the global population who even attempt this feat each year. But imagine running 111 marathons? Now we are talking about a very select group that has ever pulled off this rare achievement. Michael Kloepfer is one of those special individuals who runs not only for the pure joy of it but for the purpose of raising money to support cancer research at Sloan Kettering. Since he started running marathons in 1996 at age 42 through his most recent New York City marathon finish at age 70, Mike and his team have raised over 1 million dollars to help beat cancer through Sloan Kettering. He has run races all over the world and is a winner of the Abbott medal for completing all 6 world major marathons (and leads all Abbott medal winners with 77 total finishes). He has now run 28 consecutive NYC marathons and is one of 108 people with active streaks over 25 for the Boston Marathon. Of course, any achievement like this doesn’t come without challenges which for Mike has included fighting his own cancer in 2024. He has received surgery, is in complete response (successful removal), and is ready to keep going in 2025! Every step is that much more meaningful for Mike now as he continues to make a difference by assisting other patients in need. If you’d like to contribute and help Mike reach his $200k goal (he has already personally raised $100k), go to fredsteam.org and either enter Mike Kloepfer or his team name, Mikey’s team.  Enjoy this inspirational podcast and listen to the many stories Mike shares about his adventures and people he has met along the way including Grete Waitz, Dr. Howard Scher, and Aubrey Barr (video link tells her story). A word of caution, Mike’s story has inspired many, so know by listening to this podcast you may find yourself thinking about joining the marathon craze and running the NYC streets with Mike raising money for Sloan Kettering!  You can listen here or watch here. Godspeed (God's Speed), my friends.
