    98% of Our DNA Is “Junk”… Or Is It? 🧬 | Reality is Optional

    We mapped the human genome… and somehow it just gave us even more questions. 🧬 I watched a documentary about the human genome, and it sent me down a rabbit hole. In this episode of Reality is Optional, I talk about DNA, why every person's genome is different, what makes us genetically unique, and the huge amount of our DNA that scientists once commonly referred to as “junk DNA.” But is it actually junk? The more we learn about the genome, the more complicated that question becomes. Some non-protein-coding DNA has important regulatory and structural functions, while scientists are still working to understand other regions. As usual, this isn't a documentary review or a genetics class. It's me watching something fascinating and then talking through all the questions, observations, jokes, and random thoughts it puts into my head. How can billions of humans be so similar genetically—and yet every one of us ends up different? And if somebody tells me 98% of my DNA is junk, I'd at least like to know what it's been doing in there this whole time.
