Detroit Earned “City Of Champions” In 1935 And Here’s How - Ep 119

Send us Fan Mail Champions Day Live from the Detroit Historical Museum. The 90th Anniversary a special conversation on April 18th 2026.  Detroit didn’t just have a good sports year in the 1930s. Detroit had a stretch so absurd that it turned into a civic identity, a national headline, and an official holiday: Champions Day. We’re recording from the Detroit Historical Museum on the 90th anniversary, surrounded by artifacts that make the “City of Champions” story feel immediate again, from game used Red Wings sticks to the infamous plaque that declares Detroit’s status in ink and signatures.  Here is the story from Episode 31 on Champions Day 2021 https://www.buzzsprout.com/1897861/episodes/9657795 We talk through the wins that built the legend and the overlooked details that make it stick: the Lions and their Portsmouth Spartans roots, the grudges and pride that followed the move, and how early pro football chaos helped shape rules we still watch every Sunday. One of our favorite moments comes from seeing how a new generation discovers this history, literally riding a train from Kansas City after falling into a research rabbit hole and deciding the story was worth the trip.  The conversation keeps widening, because Detroit sports history is never just about sports. We connect the dots to civic spirit, the Great Depression backdrop, museum preservation, and the personal memories that hit hardest when a long lost radio voice comes back through a speaker. If you care about Detroit history, NFL history, the Portsmouth Spartans, the 1935 Lions title, or how a city holds on to its identity, this one is for you.  Subscribe for more deep Detroit stories, share this with a friend who loves sports history, and leave a review so more people can find Champions Day. A Detroit Baseball Time Travel Story With Real History Inside

Send us Fan Mail A dusty closet under a ballpark sounds harmless until it becomes a doorway to the past. We talk with author and genealogist Timothy Bernard Carr about Timing Is Everything, a fast-moving historical fiction time travel novel that starts in Detroit with the 2003 Tigers and then dares to rewrite the moments that still sting. If you love Detroit sports, baseball history, or Irish American storytelling, this one lands right in that sweet spot where research meets imagination. https://timothybernardcarrauthor.com/ We dig into how genealogy shaped Carr’s voice, why Rocky Road to America began as “just family research,” and how real events became the backbone for a bigger story. His main character, Mark Killeran, carries the weight of Vietnam and a lifetime of regret, then finds himself face-to-face with American legends and American mistakes. Jim Thorpe’s 1912 medal scandal, Frank Navin’s Tigers, a Babe Ruth curveball, and Ty Cobb’s complicated reputation all become turning points in an alternate history that asks what “redemption” would actually cost. Then the ripples get bigger: breaking the color barrier earlier, pushing integration beyond baseball, and imagining a very different path through JFK-era politics and the Vietnam War. We also get practical about modern self-publishing through Amazon KDP, where to find the book, and why authors have to think about piracy in the digital age. Subscribe, share this with a baseball fan or history buff, and leave a review with the one moment you’d change if you had Killeran’s chance. https://yourrootz.com/ https://linktr.ee/DetroitCityofChampions www.DJJamieDetroit.com www.WearingFunny.com

World War II, Boxing, And Detroit’s Champion

Send us Fan Mail A heavyweight crown can change a career. Fighting for dignity can change a country. We sit down with historian Randy Roberts to explore how Joe Louis moved from Detroit icon to global symbol during World War II, turning quiet resolve into a powerful stand against Jim Crow while uniting millions under one flag. Randy takes us inside The Fight of His Life, the book he coauthored with Johnny Smith, drawing on thousands of newspaper archives, Army and State Department records, and on‑the‑ground reports from bases in the United States, England, and Italy. We retrace Louis’s transformative wartime years: the relief title defenses where he donated his entire purses, the morale‑boosting exhibition tours with Sugar Ray Robinson, and the tense showdown at Camp Sibert when an MP tried to force him from a whites‑only area. These moments reveal how a soft‑spoken champion found his political voice and insisted the Army live up to American ideals. We also unpack the long shadow of Jack Johnson and how Louis was crafted as his public opposite, only to outgrow the script when justice demanded it. The conversation follows Louis beyond the ring: helping Jackie Robinson into officer candidate school at Fort Riley, pushing the PGA to grant an exemption that cracked golf’s color line, and ultimately earning an Arlington burial waiver with an assist from Ronald Reagan. Along the way, we reflect on Detroit’s own story—from the famed fist on Jefferson to a new statue honoring Louis the golfer, and the memory of Black Bottom as the city aims to rebuild with respect for what was lost. If you care about sports history, World War II, civil rights, or Detroit’s legacy, this deep dive offers fresh insight into a champion whose greatest victories happened outside the ring.
