    EP002 "Earning R-E-S-P-E-C-T" or "Get Back in There" with Steve Maynard

    In this episode of the Just Corrections Podcast we sit down with Steve Maynard, a seasoned correctional professional with an impressive 15 years of service under his belt.  Steve's journey in corrections began as a Field Training Officer, where he quickly found his calling and navigated his way up the ranks. As a Master Corporal, he earned the respect of his peers and inmates alike, often working unlimited overtime to uphold the responsibilities entrusted to him.  Throughout his career, Steve's dedication and expertise led him to various roles, including serving as an Administrative Lieutenant and Assistant Team Commander of a 53-man CERT Team. As the Team Commander, he honed his skills as an instructor, teaching RIOT Control, CELL Extraction, High-Risk Inmate Escort, and Less Lethal Application techniques.  Steve's passion for learning and growth is evident through the countless certifications he obtained, such as the Advanced Tactical Officer Certification through NCJA and his role in the Honor Guard for 12 years. He is also a General Instructor, having poured over 1,000 hours into Gang training and served on the NC Gang Committee for four years.  In this episode, we dive into the challenges Steve faced as a newcomer in corrections and how he found his voice amidst the dynamic and demanding environment of jails.     EP001 "Zombie Brain" or "Kickin' Grass" with Sue Radcliffe

Our guest, Susan Radcliffe, LCSW-C, RYT 200, brings over 25 years of clinical expertise to the conversation, offering insights into the profound challenges faced by those working within the correctional environment. Sue Radcliffe is a seasoned mental health therapist with a diverse background spanning sexual assault/domestic violence programs, therapeutic foster care, outpatient mental health clinics, and more. A graduate of Yeshiva University with a Master of Social Work, she currently serves on the Eastern Shore of Maryland as part of the Dorchester County Health Department. With a specialization in children and families impacted by incarceration, Sue is well-versed in evidenced-based treatment modalities like Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Her unique approach also incorporates trauma-informed yoga, recognizing the powerful connection between the mind and the body in the healing process. Sue's expertise doesn't stop at her clinical practice. She has been qualified as an expert witness in trauma and child and family psychotherapy across various judicial jurisdictions. She's also deeply involved in training programs such as Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), working to equip law enforcement and first responders with the tools to address trauma effectively. Moreover, Sue's passion for neuroscience and her ability to break down intricate brain science into understandable language has led her to present to diverse audiences, including law enforcement, FBI agents, states attorney's offices, and as an instructor for the Maryland Judiciary. In recognition of her impactful work, Sue was honored with the Maryland Department of Health Individual Innovation Award in 2019. Her innovative wellness program for correctional officers, which seamlessly integrates the neuroscience of trauma and the therapeutic benefits of trauma-informed yoga, has garnered attention and was even published in the prestigious Journal of Offender Rehabilitation.
