17, Marriage and Divorce and the Rich Young Man

Series: The Gospel of Matthew Service: Sunday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin Peter asked how often he must forgive, and Jesus gave him a number that ends all counting (Matthew 18.21–22). Every step of Matthew 18.15–17 aims to win the brother back, and no one wins a brother while refusing to forgive him or admit his own wrong. Then the Pharisees brought the divorce question that had already cost John his head (Matthew 19.3–5). Jesus went behind their debate to the beginning, where God made the two one flesh. They asked how to get out, and the King answered how to stay in.

16, Avoiding Offenses, Restoring a Sinning Brother, and Forgiveness

Series: The Gospel of Matthew Service: Sunday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin The disciples asked who would be greatest in the kingdom, and Jesus answered a better question: who gets in (Matthew 18.1–20). The way in is to turn and become like a little child, and whoever receives such a child in his name receives Christ himself. The millstone in this text is not around someone else's neck. It is us, whenever our conduct stops matching our confession and trips the little ones. Go after the one sheep, go to your brother alone, and treat every step as a rescue, because the goal is to gain your brother.

03, The Catholic Church, The Fruit of the Falling Away

Series: World Religions Service: Wednesday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin Paul warned the Ephesian elders that men would rise from among them speaking twisted things (Acts 20.28–32). The drift began with leaders, as one bishop rose over the elders soon after the apostles, and the Roman Catholic Church grew from that falling away. The remedy has always been God and the word of his grace.

02, Judaism, The People of the Promise

Series: World Religions Service: Wednesday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin Judaism is a heritage as well as a faith, and it is the family that gave us the Scriptures and the Messiah. The study traces Judaism from Abraham to the rabbis, with its Scriptures and holy days. Paul grieved that his people had a zeal for God without knowledge (Romans 10.1–4). Love your Jewish neighbors and talk with them about the promise kept in Christ.

14, Matthew 16, Peter’s Confession of Jesus as the Christ

Series: The Gospel of Matthew Service: Sunday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin At the hinge of Matthew's Gospel Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is (Matthew 16.1–28). Peter confesses him as the Christ, the Son of the living God, then rebukes the talk of a cross and hears himself called Satan. Confess Jesus as the Christ and follow him by denying yourself and taking up your cross.

01, Worship in Spirit and in Truth

Series: World Religions Service: Wednesday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin Jesus told the Samaritan woman that the Father seeks those who worship him in spirit and truth (John 4.19–26). Every religion is measured by his answer about who God is and how he wants to be worshiped. Treat neighbors of other faiths with respect, and learn enough to speak of the one God who has always directed his own worship.

13, Feeding the Multitudes, Walking on Water, and Controversy Over the Traditions of Men

Series: The Gospel of Matthew Service: Sunday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Rich Brown Two feedings frame these chapters, and between them Jesus walks on the sea and confronts the Pharisees over clean hands (Matthew 14.1–15.39). Peter sinks when he sees the wind, and a Canaanite mother shows the boldest faith at the King's table. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Never let tradition make void the word of God.

12, Matthew 13, Teaching in Parables

Series: The Gospel of Matthew Service: Sunday Bible Study Type: Bible Study Speaker: Phillip W. Martin On the same day men call the Spirit's work the devil's, Jesus sits in a boat and teaches in parables (Matthew 13). His stories divide those who hear from those who do not. Every parable asks what sort of hearer you are. Have ears to hear.
