    97. Teen Beach 2: Directed by Greta Gerwig

Well listeners, summer may be coming to an end and the new school year is right around the corner, but we just want to say that we have had the best 3 months ever with you guys. Yes that includes the time we were all sucked into a 1960s beach movie musical. Yeah hopefully that all was enough indication that we’re once again hitting the waves but also learning about who we really want to be by discussing the 2015 DCOM musical sequel, Teen Beach 2. Jake does a dramatic reading of some of the lyrics from this movie, Kate deals with more fictional universities, and both of them question what exactly happened to make the last 30 minutes of this movie, like that. They also discuss the breaking (the day this episode was recorded) news about the next installment of the Descendants franchise. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Jake working in a construction zone, Us being back on our HHN BS, The invite to Kate’s eventual vowel renewal is still open Jordan Fisher, The similarities between the Teen Beach and Barbieland, Segways, The school cafeterias of 2015, Disney slipping Sabrina Carpenter in another movie, and the possibilities for a Teen Beach 3. Oh my gosh you guys we cannot believe the prom is tomorrow already. We already have the perfect outfit and shoes now we just need to figure out the perfect hairstyle. So if you all could just do a quick poll while we stack product on top of product on our hair that would be great. No listeners I am not kidding that is what the first 5 minutes of this movie consists of. Which is to say that we are kicking off 2015 on the DCOM journey with the Laura Marano led buddy comedy coming of age teen movie, Bad Hair Day. Jake questions the lack of photoshop use by our main character, Kate remembers more of Liz’s backstory than her co-host does, and both of them have many, thoughts, about the wigs used in this movie. Jake also gives his mini-spoiler free review of the new Descendants movie and both of your co-hosts do a live reaction to the full Camp Rock 3 trailer. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: The trials and tribulations of owning glasses, Our imminent 6 year anniversary, The tea on the new generation Disney kids feud, Laura Marano being a separate artist from Ally Dawson, The return of college representation in DCOMs, Last lashings for Fast and Furious Supercharged, and This movie making us face the passage of time. 95. How to Build a Better Boy: Dr. Gabby-Steins Monster

For many years the world’s most brilliant scientists have tried tackling the universe’s greatest mysteries: What is on the other side of a black hole? Is time travel something that could ever be a possibility? Yet one question remains on the top of that list: Why are human boys like that? Okay well maybe that’s not exactly at the top of most scientists list but it certainly is for the protagonists of this movie. So listeners get your glasses on and your laptops charged as we finish 2014 on the DCOM journey by discussing the movie that predicted AI chat bots, How to Build a Better Boy. Jake misinterprets a text, Kate learns about r/myboyfriendisAI, and both of them can’t help but discuss how watching this movie in the current age of AI makes things feel just a bit bleak. They also report on the breaking news of yet another beloved DCOM franchise getting a new installment decades after the last entry. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: We actually had a quick turnaround between episodes for once, The DCOM tour is back, Glee energy, A hallmark hint of things to come, Giving True Jackson her flowers, XO Kitty, How Mary Shelley is actually responsible for this movie existing, The teen girl hackers of tumblr, School dance themes, and Nandos. 94. Zapped: Spending $9.99 on Boys

Ugh I swear, aren’t boys just the worst? So loud, gross, and unfocused. Well have no fear because for the low low price of… $9.99, and a freak electrical accident, you can now have access to a dog training app that can make boys do whatever you tell them to do, completely against their will! No listeners that is not the log line for a new horror movie about completely subjecting a large amount of the human population to be at your whim, it’s actually the plot summary of the 2014 Zendaya lead DCOM, Zapped. Jake has qualms about the gender of it all with this movie, Kate has qualms about this movie being categorized as sci-fi, and both of them are thrown way back with how the main characters phone looks. They also catch up on DCOM news and make plans for how to celebrate when they get to DCOM 100. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Kate getting FirstPrince pilled, The first meeting of the Start of Something New book club, Taking vitamins at our elderly age, The many similarities between DCOMs and Hallmark Channel movies, Attempts at using synonyms, Academic architecture, Obsession (2026), and spotlighting the differences between cheerleaders and dance teams. 93. Cloud 9: That Girl Can Ride (with Special Guest Amanda)

Ah the sun is shining the temperature is going up and after our last movie it feels like the perfect time to get into the summer mood, don’t you agree listeners? Well too bad because it’s actually time to bundle up and hit the slopes as we start 2014 on the DCOM journey with the Dove Cameron and Luke Benward led winter sports film, Cloud 9. Though we couldn’t arrive at the lodge alone so we brought along new special guest, the host of Retrospective-A-Rooney, Amanda to dig deeper into this film and Dove Cameron’s career as a whole. Jake realizes how this movie connects to the Hallmark cinematic universe, Kate schools us in winter sports, Amanda schools us in Liv and Maddie, and all three of us decide to form the Sebastian Swift Haters Club. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Jake does not remember the past correctly, How just a few years difference can make people nostalgic for different things, Paul Hoen and IHop, The dogs (and cats) of it all, The search for Kayla and Skye fanfiction, and the way our minds were blown by the kiss in this movie. 92. Teen Beach Movie: Their Job is Beach

Oh hey listeners! You’re just in time to join us in watching our favorite movie! You know the one about a boy and a girl from opposing groups who fall in love despite their groups feelings about each other, who ultimately unite said groups to take down a greater evil. Oh no not that one, or that other one. Okay let me just say it, we’re officially making our one and only stop in 2013 on the DCOM train as we hit the beach and learn true gender equality as we discuss the meta musical Teen Beach Movie. Jake reveals his R5 lore, Kate contemplates how she and her significant other would react to being in this situation, and both of them ponder if the titular teen beach is actually located in Barbieland. They also go over some quick Disney Channel news nuggets and reveal their official rankings for DCOMs 81-90. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Kates end of the academic year craziness, A crash course in Heated Rivalry, An examination of 6 7, Kate’s first encounter with the Newsies, A shout out to the cup song, The One Direction lore tied to this movie, and our apologies to West Side Story (2021). (Sorry for Kates audio folks, she didn’t have her microphone on her for this recording, but we persevered) Follow the host’s Twitter: @jakeblue98 & @katescommentary Instagram: jakeblueart & kvrandom Follow the podcast’s twitter: @TSOSNPodcast Follow the podcast Instagram: Somethingnewpod Email us: startofsomethingnewpodcast@gmail.com If you’re listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify feel free to leave a rating and review

    91. Girl vs. Monster: Skylar the Vampire Slayer

When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts… err I mean monsters are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight! Welcome foolish mortal listeners to… well okay it’s technically a haunted mansion but not that haunted mansion. To summarize that long winded, and partially stolen, intro is that after a little over a month away we’re officially saying goodbye to 2012 on the DCOM train with a very spooky stop as we discuss Girl vs. Monster. Jake present a theory for Disney really pushing Olivia Holt at this time, Kate has words about the editing of phone screens in the movie, and both of them discuss how this movie totally didn’t steal from Ghostbusters but might have helped inspire Inside Out 2. They also go over all the news they missed while they were away including the Hannah Montana 20th anniversary special, the newly announced Disney Legends, and the continued longevity of the Descendants and Zombies franchises. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Dealing with illnesses, Reflections on Kate’s wedding almost a year later, Olivia Holts current career in horror, A 101 lesson on Shadowhunters, The YA novel adaptation boom in 2010s cinema, Avocado toast, and A Stephen King fact check Also stayed tuned for next episode where we will reveal our DCOM rankings of movies 81-90, this episode would’ve been very bloated had we added that.
