    98. Descendants: The Culmination of Walt’s Legacy (with Special Guest Amanda)

    Once upon a time there was a girl, she wasn’t a princess, but she was a future queen, and along with her 3 friends this girl would… ah crap, hold on listeners I need to get my charging cord. What, did you think I was reading from a storybook? How lame and old, I’m obviously reading this off an iPad, because we’ve finally hit the modern DCOM classic that started a whole new franchise. We’re finally talking the 2015 Kenny Ortega crafted DCOM, Descendants, and we just couldn’t experience Kate’s first dip into this franchise alone so we brought back special guest and host of Retrospective-A-Rooney Amanda for this super sized episode breaking down the start of the what some may call official Disney fanfiction. Jake reveals how he ended up watching this movie on premiere night, Kate questions Belle and Beasts relationship timeline, and Amanda regals us with tales of the early Descendants fandom. We also finally celebrate this podcast turning 6 and give our brief reviews of Camp Rock 3.     [no listeners you’re not going crazy this is in fact the first time in this shows history that we are officially reuploading an episode, so hopefully this time it’ll stay up for you all to enjoy] Well you know what they say, third times the charm. That’s right listeners it is once again time for us to take a break from the DCOM train as once again present a bonus episode recapping of all the announcements from the D23 expo’s parks and experiences panel. Some may say this years panel was a bit disappointing compared to 2024’s but we here at The Start of Something New are just excited to hear that the plans presented in 2024 are still going forward and being built. As always we begin with notable non-parks announcements that got us excited before breaking down all the parks updates and reveals that Neil Patrick Harris had to share with us. Jake welcomes Big Snake to the villa, Kate gushes about The Imagineering Story, and both of them give Disney their flowers for actually having official panel livestreams this year as well as begs to sponsored on a Disney cruise.     97. Teen Beach 2: Directed by Greta Gerwig

    Well listeners, summer may be coming to an end and the new school year is right around the corner, but we just want to say that we have had the best 3 months ever with you guys. Yes that includes the time we were all sucked into a 1960s beach movie musical. Yeah hopefully that all was enough indication that we’re once again hitting the waves but also learning about who we really want to be by discussing the 2015 DCOM musical sequel, Teen Beach 2. Jake does a dramatic reading of some of the lyrics from this movie, Kate deals with more fictional universities, and both of them question what exactly happened to make the last 30 minutes of this movie, like that. They also discuss the breaking (the day this episode was recorded) news about the next installment of the Descendants franchise.     96. Bad Hair Day: Do You Wear Wigs?

    Oh my gosh you guys we cannot believe the prom is tomorrow already. We already have the perfect outfit and shoes now we just need to figure out the perfect hairstyle. So if you all could just do a quick poll while we stack product on top of product on our hair that would be great. No listeners I am not kidding that is what the first 5 minutes of this movie consists of. Which is to say that we are kicking off 2015 on the DCOM journey with the Laura Marano led buddy comedy coming of age teen movie, Bad Hair Day. Jake questions the lack of photoshop use by our main character, Kate remembers more of Liz’s backstory than her co-host does, and both of them have many, thoughts, about the wigs used in this movie.     95. How to Build a Better Boy: Dr. Gabby-Steins Monster

    For many years the world’s most brilliant scientists have tried tackling the universe’s greatest mysteries: What is on the other side of a black hole? Is time travel something that could ever be a possibility? Yet one question remains on the top of that list: Why are human boys like that? Okay well maybe that’s not exactly at the top of most scientists list but it certainly is for the protagonists of this movie. So listeners get your glasses on and your laptops charged as we finish 2014 on the DCOM journey by discussing the movie that predicted AI chat bots, How to Build a Better Boy.     94. Zapped: Spending $9.99 on Boys

    Ugh I swear, aren’t boys just the worst? So loud, gross, and unfocused. Well have no fear because for the low low price of… $9.99, and a freak electrical accident, you can now have access to a dog training app that can make boys do whatever you tell them to do, completely against their will! No listeners that is not the log line for a new horror movie about completely subjecting a large amount of the human population to be at your whim, it’s actually the plot summary of the 2014 Zendaya lead DCOM, Zapped. Jake has qualms about the gender of it all with this movie, Kate has qualms about this movie being categorized as sci-fi, and both of them are thrown way back with how the main characters phone looks. They also catch up on DCOM news and make plans for how to celebrate when they get to DCOM 100.     93. Cloud 9: That Girl Can Ride (with Special Guest Amanda)

    Ah the sun is shining the temperature is going up and after our last movie it feels like the perfect time to get into the summer mood, don’t you agree listeners? Well too bad because it’s actually time to bundle up and hit the slopes as we start 2014 on the DCOM journey with the Dove Cameron and Luke Benward led winter sports film, Cloud 9. Though we couldn’t arrive at the lodge alone so we brought along new special guest, the host of Retrospective-A-Rooney, Amanda to dig deeper into this film and Dove Cameron’s career as a whole. Jake realizes how this movie connects to the Hallmark cinematic universe, Kate schools us in winter sports, Amanda schools us in Liv and Maddie, and all three of us decide to form the Sebastian Swift Haters Club.
