The Dumpster is Burning but the House is not on Fire YET

In this thoughtful Sunday Edition audio editorial, Anthony Corona examines the recent Department of Justice memorandum on disability integration and community living, separating fact from fear while explaining why the document has sparked concern throughout the disability community. Using the powerful metaphor of “the dumpster is burning, but the house is not. Yet,” Anthony explores what the memorandum does and does not do. He explains that it does not repeal the Americans with Disabilities Act, overturn the Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision or create new authority to force disabled Americans into institutions. Instead, he argues that the greater concern lies in the federal government’s changing approach to enforcing disability rights and supporting community based living. The conversation looks beyond alarming social media claims to examine the long term implications for Medicaid funded supports, home and community based services, personal care attendants, transportation, independent living and the policies that help millions of disabled Americans remain active members of their communities. Rather than encouraging panic, Anthony calls for informed advocacy rooted in facts, careful analysis and coalition building. He urges disability advocates and organizations to educate themselves, engage with policymakers and prepare for the policy debates that may shape disability rights in the years ahead. This episode marks the beginning of a continuing series exploring disability policy, accessibility and independent living, with future conversations focusing on paratransit, home health services, Medicaid waivers and other critical supports that help disabled Americans live independently. Knowledge is our greatest advocacy tool. Facts are our strongest foundation. Community is our greatest strength. pisode Notes Notes go here Support Sunday Edition with Anthony Corona by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/acb-sunday-edition Find out more at https://acb-sunday-edition.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

    A Rare Perspective with Austin

Sunday Edition Presents: Austin Linton What happens when a self described adrenaline junkie, entrepreneur, storyteller and advocate is told that life as he knows it is about to change forever? This week, I sit down with Austin Linton, founder of Rare Perspective Co., for an honest and inspiring conversation about vision loss, resilience, adventure, identity and finding purpose in the unexpected. At just 25 years old, Austin was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome Type 2A, a progressive condition affecting both vision and hearing. The diagnosis forced him to rethink nearly every aspect of his life, from independence and identity to the future he had imagined for himself. Before vision loss, Austin chased adventure through skateboarding, snowboarding, motorcycles, travel and anything that pushed him beyond his comfort zone. What makes his story so compelling is that he never stopped chasing adventure. He simply found a new path forward. We will talk about the turning points along his journey, the challenges of adapting to vision loss, mental health, personal growth and how he transformed a life changing diagnosis into a mission of awareness, advocacy and connection. We will also explore the story behind Rare Perspective Co., the growing movement that uses storytelling, apparel and community engagement to challenge assumptions about blindness and low vision while encouraging all of us to see the world through a different lens. And yes, we will talk about the Icebreaker Series, including this month’s featured Icebreaker story starring yours truly, Anthony Corona, Guide Dog Bodie and a plate of meatballs that took every ounce of my willpower not to join him on the floor and scarf down a few myself. Let Us Tell You What we See: Confessions on the Dancefloor The Visual Description Party

CONFESSIONS ON THE DANCE FLOOR: THE VISUAL EXPERIENCE The Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services In Partnership with Aira LET US TELL YOU WHAT WE SEE She has the world talking again. In this special Pride Month edition of the Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts, Anthony Corona welcomed Jenine Stanley from Aira, visual interpreters Peter and Jeremiah, and lifelong friend Lori for a one of a kind visual exploration of Madonna's Confessions II The Film. Together, the panel guided listeners through the visual storytelling, symbolism, fashion, choreography, celebrity cameos, LGBTQIA plus themes, accessibility discussions, and hidden Easter eggs woven throughout Madonna's ambitious 13 minute visual companion piece to Confessions on the Dance Floor Part Two. This event also marked the official launch of our new conversation series, Let Us Tell You What We See, bringing together blind, low vision, and sighted audiences to experience visual art, entertainment, and culture through shared description and discussion. THE FILM Directed by the creative team TORSO, Confessions II The Film serves as both a visual companion to Madonna's upcoming album and a celebration of the dance floor as a place of freedom, identity, community, and reinvention. The film unfolds in a series of dreamlike chapters that blend music video, performance art, fashion film, nightclub fantasy, and personal reflection. Among the visual settings discussed: An ethereal forest sequence filled with dreamlike imagery, symbolic figures, spiritual undertones, and a sense of rebirth and transformation. A sprawling nightclub environment paying tribute to New York dance culture and the legendary Danceteria club where Madonna's early career began. A chaotic and intentionally provocative restroom sequence that serves as a crossroads for celebrity cameos, gender expression, identity, performance, and self reflection. Industrial spaces, dance floors, hidden corridors, backstage environments, and cinematic transitions that blur the line between fantasy and reality. Throughout the film, Madonna moves between observer, participant, storyteller, icon, and myth. THE EASTER EGGS One of the highlights of the discussion was identifying the many hidden references and callbacks embedded throughout the film. Among the most talked about: Debi Mazar appears in the film. Her appearance is especially meaningful given her decades long friendship with Madonna that dates back to their earliest New York years before either became a household name. Julia Garner appears throughout the film. Fans immediately connected her presence to ongoing discussions surrounding Madonna's long anticipated biographical film. One of the most talked about visual moments involves Madonna and Garner sharing imagery that feels symbolic of legacy, influence, and artistic succession. Lourdes Leon appears throughout the film and is ultimately revealed as a central figure in the story's final moments. Her appearance sparked discussion among participants about generational legacy, artistic inheritance, and the continuing evolution of Madonna's creative universe. The nightclub sequences contain visual and emotional callbacks to Danceteria, the legendary New York club that helped shape Madonna's artistic identity during the earliest days of her career. Visual references throughout the film appear to connect to earlier Madonna projects including Bedtime Story, Rain, Secret Project Revolution, Erotica, Vogue, Confessions on a Dance Floor, The Reinvention Tour, and numerous other eras that longtime fans immediately recognized. The film repeatedly returns to the dance floor as a symbol of liberation, chosen family, queer visibility, self expression, survival, joy, and reinvention. CELEBRITY CAMEOS The film features an impressive collection of celebrity appearances and visual cameos including: Debi Mazar Julia Garner Kate Moss Benedict Cumberbatch Richard E. Grant Gwendoline Christie Sabrina Carpenter Honey Dijon Arca Shygirl Odessa A'zion Archie Madekwe Lourdes Leon Cole Palmer Joao Pedro And many others who appear throughout the film's dreamlike narrative. TIMES SQUARE, PRIDE, AND A NEW ERA The conversation also revisited Madonna's surprise Pride Month performance in Times Square that generated headlines around the world. Participants discussed the enormous crowd that filled Times Square, creating an atmosphere many compared to New Year's Eve moments before the ball drops. The performance celebrated Pride, self expression, community, freedom, and the enduring power of the dance floor. Listeners explored how the Times Square event functions as both a celebration of Madonna's past and a launchpad for her future as she prepares to release Confessions on the Dance Floor Part Two on July 3. The discussion also touched on the staging, visual presentation, costuming, choreography, and the ways Madonna continues to use public spaces to create communal experiences centered around music, identity, and belonging. PRIDE, COMMUNITY, AND ACCESSIBILITY The conversation explored how the film continues Madonna's decades long relationship with LGBTQIA plus audiences. From the dance floor as sanctuary to the celebration of gender expression, identity, self determination, and chosen family, listeners discussed how many of the film's visual themes resonate deeply within Pride Month and queer culture. The event itself reflected that spirit by bringing together blind, low vision, and sighted participants in a shared visual experience. AIRA GIVEAWAY Thanks to our friends at Aira, two listeners will receive 30 minute Aira packages. The details on how to qualify and claim these packages are included within the podcast episode. You'll have to listen to learn how to enter and win. BEYOND THE FILM: THE FUTURE OF ACCESS Toward the end of the conversation, Jenine Stanley joined Anthony to discuss exciting developments happening at Aira. The discussion included Aira's Trusted Tester initiative and Build AI efforts, both of which are helping shape the future of visual interpreting and accessible technology. Listeners learned how blind and low vision users are helping guide the development of emerging technologies through real world testing, feedback, and collaboration. The conversation emphasized that accessibility works best when innovation is guided by lived experience, community involvement, and meaningful partnerships between technology developers and users. Sunday Edition: Breaking Barriers one Word at a time, The Ins and Outs of Court Reporting from the Blind Experience

Sunday Edition with Anthony Corona Shelley Keeland, Breaking Barriers One Word at a Time What does it take to turn determination, talent, and a dream into a career that many believed was impossible? This week on Sunday Edition, Anthony welcomed Shelley Keeland for an inspiring and heartfelt conversation about her life, her journey, and more than three decades as one of the nation’s pioneering blind court reporters. Born totally blind and raised in Arkansas, Shelley attended the Arkansas School for the Blind before earning a degree in Political Science from Hendrix College. Encouraged by family, shaped by life on her grandparents’ farm, and driven by a love of language, grammar, and the legal system, Shelley set her sights on a profession that few believed a blind person could successfully enter. Court reporting is one of the most demanding professions in the legal field, requiring speeds of 225 words per minute combined with extraordinary accuracy and attention to detail. Shelley became one of the first blind court reporters in the United States, overcoming inaccessible technology, professional skepticism, discrimination, and countless barriers along the way. During this wide ranging conversation, Shelley shared stories from her remarkable career, the mentors and supporters who helped make her success possible, and the realities of working as a professional court reporter in a field where precision matters every single day. We were also honored to be joined by Judge Byrd, affectionately known as Tea Byrd, who worked alongside Shelley for many years. Judge Byrd offered valuable insight from an employer’s perspective and shared observations about Shelley’s professionalism, dedication, work ethic, and the tremendous respect she earned from judges, attorneys, coworkers, and court personnel throughout her career. Several friends also joined the conversation, including Larry, Shelley’s former technology counselor, who reflected on her persistence, determination, and willingness to tackle challenges that would have discouraged many others. Together, we explored topics including inaccessible software, personal and professional advocacy, workplace accommodations, ethics, problem solving, and the creative workarounds often required when technology and systems fail to meet the needs of blind professionals. Perhaps most importantly, Shelley reminded us that success often belongs to those who refuse to give up. Throughout the discussion, we encouraged listeners to pursue careers that align with both their talents and their passions and to remember that one no, two no’s, or even ten no’s do not have to define the outcome. Shelley’s story is a powerful reminder that determination, preparation, advocacy, and resilience can open doors that others insist should remain closed. If you have ever wondered whether a dream is worth pursuing, this conversation offers a compelling answer. Sit back and enjoy this uplifting and inspiring episode of Sunday Edition.
