    Alaskan Family Fights for Their Lives Plus 5 additions Stories In 1982, a lifelong Alaskan raised in a subsistence lifestyle took the family’s annual fall trip up the Nushagak River near New Stuyahok to hunt moose and gather berries. Traveling on a cousin’s 32-foot fishing boat with extra relatives, they grounded on a shifting gravel bar at Black Point near Angel Bay during low tide. The grounding damaged the engine intercooler, forcing repairs while the younger kids were sent upstream in a skiff to fish for silver salmon.Almost immediately, large rocks began splashing around the skiff. On the bluff roughly 70 yards across the river stood a hairy man-like figure screaming, grunting, and hurling basketball-sized rocks. The adults on the fishing boat opened fire; even a 220-grain .30-06 round from a skilled marksman only briefly knocked the creature down before it rose and continued the attack. The children were rushed into the boat’s cabin for cover as the adults staged repeated armed sorties. Rocks punched holes in the fiberglass hull during intermittent exchanges that lasted nearly two hours.When the rising tide finally freed the boat, the family fled downriver. The children collapsed from exhaustion once the bluff was safely behind them. To this day none of the relatives who were present will discuss the incident.
