S14 E2 James Monroe: The Last of the Founding Father Presidents

In this episode of Your History Your Story, we’re joined by Richard Gatchell, the five-times-great-grandson of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, known as the last of the five Founding Father presidents. Monroe served our country as president for two terms from 1817 - 1825. Richard will highlight stories from Monroe’s remarkable life, including his service under General George Washington at the Battle of Trenton on the day after Christmas in 1776, during which he sustained serious wounds. He will also talk about Monroe’s critical role in the Louisiana Purchase, his service as Secretary of State and Secretary of War under President James Madison and the creation of the famous Monroe Doctrine which he put forth during his presidency to boldly warn European powers against any interference in the Western Hemisphere. Richard will also share his thoughts on what it means to be descended from one of America’s founding patriots and his passion for passing that history on to future generations. S13 E1 Blue and Gray: Why They Fought

In this episode of Your History Your Story, we are very happy to welcome back a truly distinguished guest: Pulitzer Prize winning author, renowned historian and the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, Emeritus at Princeton University, James M. McPherson. Jim previously joined us to discuss the military, political and international significance of the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American history. Today, he returns to take us even deeper into the human experience of the Civil War, drawing from his landmark 1997 book, “For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War”. In this episode, Jim explores the powerful and often deeply personal motivations that compelled both Union and Confederate soldiers to continue fighting, even in the face of death, devastating wounds and unimaginable hardship. Drawing from numerous letters and diaries of Civil War soldiers, he helps us understand not just how the war was fought, but why it was endured. S12 E12 Alzheimer's: A Science and History Perspective

In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Dr. Todd Goldberg. Todd and I became friends back in junior high and high school, but after graduation, life took us in different directions and unfortunately we lost touch. In recent years, however, we reconnected through this podcast after he heard our episode on the Amazing Kreskin. I’m genuinely grateful for that reconnection and very pleased to be speaking with my friend today. Dr. Goldberg is a board-certified internal medicine and geriatric specialist, currently serving as an associate professor at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and chief of geriatric medicine at Jefferson Abington Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania. He has been recognized for many years as a “Top Doctor” in geriatrics by Philadelphia Magazine, reflecting his deep experience caring for older adults and for families navigating complex medical challenges. One of the central topics of our conversation today is Alzheimer’s disease—its history, the science behind it and what it means for patients and families. This is a subject that is very close to home for me. My mother lived with Alzheimer’s disease, and the impact on her—and on our entire family—was profound. That experience has shaped my interest in understanding the disease more deeply. Dr. Goldberg brings both medical expertise and a compassionate, human perspective to this discussion, including insight into the very real challenges caregivers face and the importance of awareness around the support and resources available to them. In addition to his medical work, he is also an accomplished writer and dedicated history enthusiast, having contributed to numerous medical books and journals, as well as several works exploring the classic comic strip Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur and other history-related comics. Today’s conversation brings together medicine, history and lived experience in a way that I believe is both important and deeply meaningful. S12 E10 Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm

In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Julie Kresge, the Marketing and Media Coordinator for Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. For more than 30 years, my family has created wonderful memories visiting Quiet Valley’s “Old Time Christmas” program — an annual tradition that truly captures the warmth and spirit of the season. That is why we are especially honored to share the story of this remarkable historic site. Quiet Valley is a working historical farm that transports you to the 19th century — and even earlier — through its many year-round programs. In addition to “Old Time Christmas”, which includes a live nativity, visitors can enjoy “Farm Animal Frolic,” “Spooky Days on the Farm,” “Harvest Festival” and many other interesting and exciting activities. A visit to Quiet Valley feels like you are stepping into another time — you can walk among the barns and fields, meet costumed interpreters and even visit a one-room schoolhouse where you can sing songs and experience what it was like to be in school more than 130 years ago. Join us as we speak with Julie about the fascinating history of Quiet Valley — a farm with roots reaching back to the 1700’s, when its earliest residents included a former Hessian soldier from the American Revolution — and learn how this special place continues to bring the past to life for visitors of all ages.
