Leaders on Empty: When the Inner Life Begins to Fray

What happens when I have nothing left to give? In this fourth episode exploring The Imaginal Coach, I speak honestly about the hidden exhaustion carried by many capable and committed leaders. Burnout does not always arrive as a dramatic collapse. Sometimes it is a slow leak of energy, curiosity and hope. I can continue performing, producing and caring for others while quietly running on empty. Drawing upon the image of the cocoon, I explore how seasons of exhaustion can feel like dissolution. Yet within that uncertainty, new desires, questions and boundaries may already be emerging. In this episode, I explore: Why competence can conceal deep emotional and spiritual exhaustion. How burnout can slowly diminish our hope and sense of purpose. Why we sometimes resist the changes we know we need to make. How moving from victim to creator can help us recover a sense of agency. The importance of identifying burdens and expectations that are no longer ours to carry. Why the return of curiosity can be an early sign of renewed life. How rest and the “unforced rhythms of grace” can lead us towards healthier and more sustainable leadership.Rest is not simply a reward at the end of a productive life. It is a doorway into a healthier way of living and leading. Naming our emptiness is not a sign of weakness. It may be the beginning of transformation. Where in my life do I currently feel most stuck or drained? What expectation or burden might I need to put down? What small choice could help me move from victim to creator this week? This episode is based on Chapter Four, “Leaders on Empty: When the Inner Life Begins to Fray,” from my book, The Imaginal Coach. The Art of Imaginal Coaching: Presence, Silence and Story

What creates the conditions for genuine transformation? In this third episode exploring The Imaginal Coach, Mark briefly revisits the first two chapters before turning to the art of imaginal coaching. Chapter One introduced the threshold of change: the moment when the familiar no longer fits, but the future is not yet clear. Chapter Two explored coaching as a posture of presence, patience and belief, offering people a mirror rather than handing them a map. Chapter Three asks what a coach actually does in the space between the old life and the new one. Drawing upon the transformation of a caterpillar within the cocoon, Mark explores four essential elements of imaginal coaching: Presence creates a safe space in which people can stop performing and begin listening to themselves.Silence allows deeper truths to emerge without being hurried or controlled.Story and metaphor give language to experiences that are still taking shape.Emotional intelligence helps us remain present to tension, uncertainty and possibility.Imaginal coaching is not about forcing the butterfly. It is about creating the conditions in which emerging life can be noticed, trusted and given space to find its wings. Where in my conversations do I need to be more fully present? What might become audible if I allowed a little more silence? What story or metaphor is helping me understand what is emerging? This episode is based on Chapter Three of Mark Dunwoody’s book, The Imaginal Coach: The Art of Imaginal Coaching, Presence, Silence and Story. A Mirror, Not a Map: What Great Coaching Really Does

What does a coach actually do? In this episode of the Healthy Rhythms Podcast, Mark Dunwoody explores Chapter Two of his book, The Imaginal Coach, and considers what coaching is, what it is not, and why it can be so transformative. Mark shares the story of Albert, a youth-centre caretaker who saw possibility in him during a difficult season of his teenage years. Albert never called himself a coach, but his presence, kindness and belief helped Mark see a different future for himself. Mark also reflects on Alex, a businessman who later coached him through searching questions about faith, work, purpose and the kind of leader he was becoming. Both men demonstrated that coaching is a posture before it is a profession. At its heart, coaching begins when one person gives another enough attention, belief and space to see themselves differently. In this episode, Mark explores: Why coaching is about walking beside someone rather than standing above themThe differences between coaching, therapy, consulting and mentoringWhy coaching should strengthen a person’s ability to notice, choose and actWhat it means to offer someone a mirror rather than a mapThe balance between kindness and courage in a coaching conversationMark’s favourite coaching question: “Would you like the next question to be a feather or a sword?”What the questions of Jesus teach us about transformationWhy presence and genuine human connection matter more than technique aloneQuestions for reflection: Who has seen something in you that you could not yet see in yourself? Where might you be giving answers when a thoughtful question would serve someone better? Who in your life needs the gift of your attention, belief and presence this week? This episode is based on Chapter Two, “What Is Coaching?”, from Mark Dunwoody’s book, The Imaginal Coach: How Leaders Unlock Human Potential One Conversation at a Time.

    Crossing The Threshold

Crossing the Threshold: When Staying the Same Costs Too Much Every meaningful change begins with a moment of hesitation. We find ourselves standing between the life we know and the life that is calling us. The familiar may no longer fit, but stepping into something new still feels uncertain. In this episode, based on Chapter One of The Imaginal Coach, I explore what it means to cross a threshold of change. I reflect on Joseph Campbell’s idea of “the refusal of the call,” the quiet ache of untapped potential and the point at which staying the same begins to cost more than changing. I also share something of my own experience of living and working across five countries. Looking back, those moves can sound adventurous and inevitable. At the time, they involved difficult goodbyes, practical questions and plenty of second thoughts. Perhaps clarity does not always come before we move. Sometimes it meets us after we take the first honest step. In this episode, we explore: Why hesitation is a natural part of meaningful changeHow to recognise the quiet ache of an unanswered callThe difference between changing our circumstances and changing withinWhat we may need to release as we enter a new seasonWhy we rarely feel completely readyHow imagination helps us see what might flourishThree questions to carry with you: Where am I standing at a threshold? What is the cost of staying exactly where I am?What is one honest step I can take towards what is calling me?This episode draws from Chapter One of The Imaginal Coach: How Leaders Unlock Human Potential One Conversation at a Time by Mark Dunwoody. Human Beings Change Through Conversations

In this episode, I explore one of the central ideas behind my new book, The Imaginal Coach: Human beings change through conversations. We live in a world overflowing with information, opinions, podcasts, books, videos, and now artificial intelligence. Yet despite having more information than any previous generation, many people continue to wrestle with questions of identity, purpose, fear, uncertainty, and change. Why? Because transformation is rarely about information alone. Drawing on more than thirty years of working with leaders, entrepreneurs, church planters, business owners, and organisations around the world, I share why some conversations simply exchange information while others have the power to transform lives. In this episode, I reflect on several conversations that shaped my own journey and explore why listening deeply, asking thoughtful questions, and creating space for imagination often matter more than having the perfect answer. We also discuss: • Why transformational conversations focus on identity rather than behaviour • The difference between information and transformation • Why leaders are often not lacking information but struggling to make sense of what they already know • The role of curiosity, listening, and disruptive questions in personal growth • Why imagination is essential for hope and change • How coaching helps people discover possibilities they may not yet see for themselves • Why meaningful human conversations matter more than ever in an age of artificial intelligence One of the coaching questions I explore is: "What if the future could be different from your current reality?" Because hope often begins when we imagine a future that does not yet exist. Reflection Questions: • Who has had a transformational conversation with you? • What did they do that made the conversation so impactful? • Who in your life might need a transformational conversation from you this week? • How might you listen more deeply and ask better questions? In a world full of answers, perhaps what people need most is someone willing to listen. Thank you for listening.
