From Graphic Design to Garden Design with Peter Hum | The Front Garden EP146

In this episode… Our host, Adam Hompas, sits down with Peter Hum from Peter Christopher Gardens for an honest chat about career changes, starting a business, backing yourself, and the importance of doing the little things properly. Peter shares how he moved from graphic design into horticulture after discovering that life behind a computer screen was not for him. What began as a side job helping at a gardening business became an apprenticeship, a genuine passion for plants and soil, and, eventually, the launch of Peter Christopher Gardens in 2021. The conversation explores the early realities of business ownership, from saying yes to too much, learning from underquoting, and adapting to a shifting market, through to building a trusted network of specialists and understanding where your own strengths sit. Peter also speaks about his design process, his admiration for Japanese-inspired gardens, and how attention to detail continues to shape the way his team works.  A major focus of the episode is the Hawthorn garden project that became a turning point in Peter’s career.  After identifying serious soil and plant health issues, Peter undertook a complex restoration process that required technical knowledge, care, patience and persistence. That project eventually led Peter to enter the Victorian Landscape Industry Awards and receive the Nick Van Diemen Award, giving him the confidence to keep levelling up his business. It is a warm, practical, and reflective episode about craftsmanship, humility, growth, and the value of trusting your own abilities.   Key Takeaways Career paths do not have to be linear. Peter’s journey from graphic design to horticulture is a reminder that the skills you build in one industry can often shape your strength in another. Apprenticeships can unlock confidence. Peter’s experience at TAFE helped him realise he had found the right industry, particularly after being recognised as Apprentice of the Year early in his training. Technical knowledge matters. His understanding of soil, plant health and disease became critical in identifying and resolving serious issues in a large residential garden. Good business often means knowing your lane. Peter Christopher Gardens focuses on design, soft landscaping, and maintenance, while working with a trusted network of hardscapers, builders, and carpenters to bring projects to completion. The client relationship is everything. Peter places a strong focus on trust, communication and helping clients understand where their money is going, particularly when projects need to be staged. Awards can be a powerful confidence builder. Entering the Landscaping Victoria Awards gave Peter external validation for years of hard work and helped him see the value of his contribution to the industry. The one percenters count. Inspired by Japanese gardens, Peter’s approach centres on cleanliness, detail, practicality, and consistently doing the small things well.   🔔 Follow The Front Garden so you don’t miss any future episodes.   👁️‍🗨️ About Peter Hum & Peter Christopher Gardens Website: www.peterchristophergardens.com.auFacebook: Peter Christopher GardensInstagram: @peterchristophergardensGot a suggestion for an episode of The Front Garden? Craft, Scale and Client Fit with Timeless Outdoors | The Front Garden EP145

In this episode… Our host, Adam Hompas, is joined by Aaron Leslie and Brenna Kinnaird from Timeless Outdoors for a conversation that moves between craftsmanship, design thinking, construction challenges and the reality of delivering high-quality landscapes at scale. Aaron shares the evolution of Timeless Outdoors, from its construction roots through to a growing focus on design, and the role that quality control, client relationships, and long-term maintenance play in protecting the integrity of a finished project. He speaks candidly about the difficulty of maintaining high standards on site, why small details matter, and how the right client relationship can make all the difference. Brenna brings the design perspective, drawing on her background in architecture and her transition into landscape design. She discusses the importance of understanding plants as living things, how architecture and landscape can work together, and why site involvement is essential when design intent meets real-world conditions. The conversation also explores their experience in creating two Boutique Gardens at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, the value of prefabrication and preparation, and the lessons learned from designing a garden with a strong concept and a clear story. For landscaping professionals, this episode offers a grounded look at the balance between creativity and practicality, the importance of communication, and the value of building landscapes that feel considered, connected and built to last.   Key takeaways Quality control is built through communication, not just systems Aaron speaks openly about the challenge of maintaining craftsmanship across a team. For Timeless Outdoors, it comes down to on-site conversations, explaining the “why” behind the details, and being willing to fix things before they become bigger issues. Design intent needs to be translated on-site Brenna highlights that landscape plans are not always enough on their own. Site conditions shift, opportunities arise, and good outcomes often result when designers and construction teams work together in real time. Landscape is more fluid than architecture Coming from an architecture background, Brenna reflects on the difference between designing buildings and designing landscapes. Unlike architecture, landscaping often requires flexibility, responsiveness and a willingness to work with the land as it reveals itself. Great landscapes connect the house, garden and site Aaron explains his belief that the landscape should work closely with a home's architecture and interior. For high-end residential projects, the garden is not an afterthought—it is a vital part of the property. Plant knowledge matters Brenna shares how studying horticulture and working in a retail nursery helped build her confidence as a designer. Her advice is a strong reminder that plants are living things, not just finishes on a plan. Designing for large rural properties requires a different sense of scale Timeless Outdoors works on large properties around Daylesford and beyond, where proportions need to be much bigger than they would be in a suburban setting. Aaron’s advice: when working on large sites, scale everything up. Preparation is everything for show gardens Their Boutique Garden at MIFGS was prefabricated to a high degree before arriving on site, allowing the team to move quickly and focus on fine-tuning details. For anyone considering a show garden, preparation and a strong concept are key. Not every client is the right client Aaron makes a strong point about interviewing the client as much as the client interviews the business. When projects involve significant investment, emotion and trust, shared expectations and mutual respect are essential. A clean site reflects a professional mindset From coffee cups to tools and skip bins, Aaron sees site cleanliness as part of the overall standard of work. It is about respect for the client, the team and the project. The best work comes from enjoying the process The episode closes on a simple but important idea: landscaping is demanding, but if you are giving so much of your life to the work, you may as well build a business and process you genuinely enjoy.   🔔 Follow The Front Garden so you don’t miss any future episodes.   👁️‍🗨️ About Timeless Outdoors Website: timelessoutdoors.com.auFacebook: Timeless OutdoorsInstagram: @timelessoutdoorsGot a suggestion for an episode of The Front Garden? Designing with Passion, Plants and Purpose with La Muxlow | The Front Garden EP144

In this episode… Our host, Adam Hompas, chats with La Muxlow from La Muxlow Garden Design about the realities, rewards, and relentless preparation involved in creating a garden for the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Fresh from her 2026 MIFGS balcony garden, La reflects on the emotional high of exhibiting, the pressure of delivering a garden in a tight timeframe, and the value of using MIFGS gardens to sharpen your voice as a designer.  La shares how feedback from the public and industry helped her better understand the kind of spaces she wants to create—warm, welcoming, highly functional outdoor rooms layered with plants, softness and beauty. The conversation also explores La’s journey from graphic design and corporate project management into garden design, and how those earlier skills now support her as a business owner. From managing client expectations to coordinating contractors, collaborators and budgets, La explains why being a strong designer is only one part of running a successful practice.  Adam and La also discuss the importance of clear communication between designers, landscapers and clients, particularly during construction when site realities can shift the original design intent. La talks about the value of awkward conversations early, documenting expectations clearly, and protecting relationships with kindness and honesty. The episode wraps with a practical look at design tools, including Vectorworks, SketchUp, and AI, and at how La is experimenting with technology while still keeping plants, site conditions, and wildlife at the heart of her design process. Precision in the Details with Tomas Runciman | The Front Garden EP140

TL;DR: In Episode 140 of The Front Garden, Adam Hompas chats with Tomas Runciman from Straightcurve about why garden edging is one of the most overlooked but important elements in landscape construction.   From modular systems and faster installs to material choices and emerging design trends, this episode is a practical look at how the right details can lift the entire project. In this episode… Adam Hompas sits down with Tomas Runciman from Straightcurve to explore why garden edging is far more than a finishing touch.  From defining levels and holding materials in place to shaping spaces and supporting long-term design integrity, Tomas makes the case for edging as one of the quiet achievers of the landscape. Tomas shares his own journey into the industry, from childhood garden drawings and time spent growing food with family, through to studying landscape architecture, horticulture and botany. That blend of design thinking and practical knowledge comes through clearly in this conversation, particularly when discussing how thoughtful systems can improve both the build process and the final result. The chat dives into the evolution of steel edging and raised garden bed systems, including the benefits of modular construction, flexible and rigid profiles, hidden fixings, and products designed to save time on site without compromising finish. Tomas also explains the growing appeal of weathering steel, the role of galvanised steel in coastal and contemporary projects, and how material choices are shaping the next phase of Australian landscape design.  There’s plenty here for landscapers, designers and contractors alike, from installation considerations and durability to how feedback from the industry helps drive product development. Tomas also shares a sneak peek at what’s next for Straightcurve, including a forthcoming powder-coated range.  Key takeaways Garden edging plays a structural role in landscape design, helping define spaces, hold materials, manage levels and maintain design integrity over time.Modular systems can dramatically reduce installation time, especially when they eliminate the need for welding, visible fixings and unnecessary on-site fiddling.Material choice matters, with weathering steel offering a natural patinaed look and galvanised steel providing longevity, especially in coastal environments.Good product design supports better builds, making life easier not only for experienced landscapers but also for teams and DIY users working on site. The industry continues to improve through feedback, with contractor input playing a direct role in the evolution of systems and installation methods.Straightcurve is preparing to launch a powder-coated range, signalling where landscape detailing and product finishes may be heading next.🔔 Follow The Front Garden so you don’t miss any future episodes.   👁️‍🗨️ About Tomas Runciman Website: straightcurve.com/au/Blog: Garden BlogFacebook: Straightcurve Garden EdgeInstagram: @straightcurvegardenedgeLinkedIn: Straightcurve pty ltd and Tomas RuncimanGot a suggestion for an episode of The Front Garden?
