Ep106. How to talk to non-vegans, with Dr Melanie Joy

Ep106. How to talk to non-vegans, with Dr Melanie Joy

For today's interview, we're joined by Dr Melanie Joy – author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows and founder of advocacy group Beyond Carnism.

We discuss what prompted her to go vegetarian and then vegan, what carnism means, and why our systems are structured to make us believe it's OK to support harm to animals.

She shares her views on how and why society has a bias towards meat eating, why carnivores get defensive, and why there are negative vegan stereotypes in which we are deemed over-emotional and irrational.

Should we try to convert people? How can we cope with that sense of urgency to turn people vegan? And how should we talk to our loved ones about veganism?  Dr Melanie Joy answers all these questions and more as she outlines how we can be  effective ambassadors for veganism without causing a divide.

Ep105. Why do the press say a vegan diet is unhealthy?

Ep105. Why do the press say a vegan diet is unhealthy?

Today Holly and Molly take the oat milk challenge – and discover it's easier than they thought to make their own plant-based milk. Next week, Molly is promising to attempt her own vegan butter whilst Holly is setting herself the task of homemade feta cheese. We also discuss recent news articles that claim a vegan diet can cause cancer and is generally an unhealthy choice.

Holly is off to Glastonbury and hoping to chat to fellow vegan Billie Eilish (ahem) and will be reporting back on all the amazing plant-based food there (email simplyvegan@anthem.co.uk if you're going too!). Tune in on Thursday to hear from Dr Melanie Joy – she will be discussing the concept of 'carnism' and how we should talk to non-vegans.

Ep104. How veganism saved my life, with Heather Mills

Ep104. How veganism saved my life, with Heather Mills

Activist, charity  and businesswoman Heather Mills grew up on a typical Northern diet of sausage and mash, but after losing her leg in an accident, she was desperate to recover. In this fascinating interview, she explains how she healed herself with wheatgrass, smoothies and a raw vegan diet and how veganism ultimately saved her leg – and her life.

Heather discusses the different routes to veganism, the role of fake meat within that and how she's grown V-Bites to be the world's largest manufacturer of plant-based meat and cheese. We also cover idealism versus realism, the importance of listening to your body and why she currently follows a FODMAP diet.

Finally, we chat about her solution-focused approach which came from difficult childhood, why she's been called a 'nutter' for pointing out the truth and the importance of doing what's right in the face of adversity. Heather also shares insights into her work with the government and in war zones, including Ukraine.
