Why does putting something difficult into words sometimes change how we relate to it? Dr. James W. Pennebaker, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at UT Austin, joins Furkhan Dandia to explore the research that launched expressive writing and the questions scientists are still trying to answer. Dr. Pennebaker recounts how he moved from studying physical symptoms to researching what people keep to themselves, and describes the writing experiments that followed. Together, they explore the difference between purposeful expressive writing and daily diary-keeping, why the exercise is not about being a good writer, what venting misses, and why writing can be an opportunity to organize experience and notice new connections. The conversation also explores the development of LIWC, how language may reflect self-focus and emotion, self-reflection during conflict, and the very personal nature of meaning. Key moments include the origins of his research, practical instructions for writing about difficult experiences, his caution that writing does not help everyone, and the importance of stopping if the exercise becomes too distressing. Pennebaker, Ph.D., is an American social psychologist and Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin, whose research has reshaped how scholars understand writing, emotion, health, and everyday language. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Eckerd College in 1972 and a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1977. Before returning to UT Austin in 1997, he held academic positions at the University of Virginia and Southern Methodist University.Pennebaker is widely known for pioneering research on expressive writing and emotional disclosure. Beginning in the 1980s, he investigated how writing privately about upsetting experiences relates to health and psychological adjustment. His work also examines how ordinary words reflect the ways people think, feel, and relate to one another. With colleagues, he developed Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), a computerized method of examining word categories across written and spoken language. His books include Opening Up, Writing to Heal, and The Secret Life of Pronouns: What Our Words Say About Us. He is also a co-founder of Receptiviti, which applies psycholinguistic methods to language data. His contributions have earned him election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2023 and to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2025. In this EZ Conversations interview, he reflects on how his research began, why expressive writing differs from simple venting or diary-keeping, and why no single method works for everyone.
