    True Listener Tales #43: The Bathroom Mirror Face, The Black-Eyed Girlfriend And The Glitch-Walking Demon

    The girls aren’t the only ones with terrifying tales. Everyone’s got something to say on this True Listener Tales edition #43, as the listeners say, “Hey, here’s the most traumatic thing that ever happened to me”. This round starts with a fake dead mom prank. Caveat: that’s not a prank, that’s psychological warfare. Then we get a Ouija board sleepover, a ghost named Rasha, a bathroom mirror, vomiting and a smiling figure in the hallway. From there, the stories keep escalating because apparently everybody decided to submit from the devil’s group chat. We get a grandfather’s final goodbye, a ghost light being hurled across a theater, Sergio praying over Jane and getting grabbed by something with inhuman strength, Bala speaking in his dead uncle’s voice at a funeral, a Tombstone tipping table with attitude, demonic grandparents eating some bloody red thing, Maeve’s glitch-walking shadow creature, and Anthony’s near-death experience after being hit by a car. Not sure this is the kind of “list is endless” moment we want but it’s what we’ve got. Heebie-jeebies maxxing, anyone?

    Episode 217: Trina’s Gettysburg Ghost Souvenir And The Matthew Nolan Oppenheimer Case

    The girls are back, and this time, to ask two very reasonable questions. One, why would you invite a Gettysburg ghost into your home. And, two, why does the Christopher Nolan brother rumor have so much truth to it? First, Monique tells the story of Trina, a skeptic who went on a Gettysburg ghost tour during her honeymoon, mocked the whole thing and then jokingly invited an entity home like it was a refrigerator magnet. Her husband told her to take it back but she just had to double down. The haunting that followed was water-based and weirdly poetic: scalding showers, exploding water, light bulbs burning out near sinks, CPAP issues, pneumonia that made her feel like she was drowning, and eventually a black shadow figure sliding across the floor toward a pond. Lesson: respect the dead. Then Amy takes us into the real story behind the viral rumor about Christopher Nolan’s “fugitive hitman brother.” The truth is messier: Matthew Nolan, the filmmaker’s older brother, allegedly used the alias Matthew Oppenheimer while posing as an heir to the Oppenheimer diamond fortune. That alias pulled him into the orbit of Robert Cohen, a tax accountant tied to missing money, fake passports, a kidnapping, a brutal murder, an Interpol red notice, a prison escape plan, and a justice system that somehow still left Cohen’s daughter without the accountability she deserved. This one has a strong AFHP moral of the story: stop being s****y while you’re alive, because neither ghosts nor consequences are ever impressed with that behavior.

    Episode 216: Mia’s Nightmare, James’s Mirror Man And Yiya Murano’s Cyanide Tea | Monique & Amy

    The girls are back with an episode that starts with mystical Russian Orthodox nightmare fuel and ends with Argentina turning a serial killer into Friendship Day merch. Totally normal. First, Amy tells the story of Mia and James, a mysterious ex-boyfriend from an Otherworld Patreon story who casually claimed he could have the dreams of people he slept next to. Cute first date chat? No, thank you. Then he accurately described Mia’s lifelong recurring childhood nightmare, the one she had never told anyone about, and somehow, after that, the nightmare stopped. And if that wasn’t enough, Mia later saw James’s body in a mirror with a completely different old man’s face, and when James told his therapist, she admitted she had seen the same man too. Then Monique takes us to Buenos Aires for the story of Yiya Murano, the so-called Poisoner of Montserrat, a woman obsessed with status, elegance and living like a socialite on money she did not have. After running a Ponzi scheme on her friends, Yiya allegedly solved her little financial problem by poisoning three women with cyanide. And somehow, after prison, Argentina said: we have a new pop culture icon. We’re talking TV appearances, mugs, memes and musicals. This episode has dream stealing, hooved angel warnings, poisoned pastries and a whole lot of “what the f**k?”

    Episode 215: The Frederick Valentich Disappearance And The Port Chicago Fifty | Monique & Amy

    The girls are back with a birthday episode, and they’re giving “rager” a new meaning as they travel from “maybe aliens snatched this man’s plane” to “the U.S. Navy really said racism? never heard of her.” First, Monique gives Amy the birthday gift of a deeply weird UFO disappearance: the 1978 case of Frederick Valentich, a 20-year-old Australian pilot who vanished over the Bass Strait after reporting a strange object hovering above him. His final transmission included the words “it’s not an aircraft,” followed by 17 seconds of creepy mechanical noise and then absolutely f*****g nothing. Then Amy takes us into the Port Chicago disaster, one of the worst homefront disasters of World War II and a story so enraging it should come with a free blood pressure cuff. Black sailors were forced to load explosives without proper training, officers turned it into a speed competition, 320 people were killed in a massive blast and then the Navy blamed the surviving Black sailors when they refused to go back to the same deadly work. It took 80 years for the Port Chicago 50 and other convicted sailors to be exonerated.

    Episode 214: A UFO In Maine and The Kiss-In That Changed History

    The girls are back and this episode travels all the way from creepy little UFO nightmare to “oh cool, society is actually the monster”. First, Amy takes us to the Allagash Wilderness in Maine, where four friends head out on a late-night fishing trip, see a strange light over the lake, flash SOS at it and then return to a campsite where their massive fire is nearly dead. Add in missing time, shared nightmares, hypnosis and some extremely specific alien hand details, and suddenly “night fishing” feels like a f*****g terrible idea. Then Monique tells the story of Ted Brown, a Black gay activist whose life was shaped by racism, homophobia, deportation, family trauma and one biological father who deserves to be launched directly into the sun. From being born after his pregnant mother was drugged and institutionalized, to helping organize London’s first Pride march in 1972, Ted’s story is about survival, visibility and the fact that Pride was never just glitter and brand logos. It was protest.

    Episode 213: A Haunted Dorm, A Dead Spy and One Very F*****g Suspicious Bag

    The girls are back with an episode that starts with a viral “haunted building” video and somehow ends with one of the most suspicious spy deaths in modern true crime. First, Monique digs into Montreal’s Grey Nuns Building, where the ghost story exists, not in the flickering lights, but in the 60 children killed in a 1918 fire, the crypt full of bodies under student housing and the deeply complicated legacy behind the building itself. Then Amy takes on the death of Gareth Williams, the MI6 codebreaker found inside a padlocked red North Face bag in his bathtub. The official story says “accident”. The crime scene says absolutely f*****g not. Between the sweltering apartment, wiped-down evidence, missing fingerprints, delayed reporting and a coroner who called the death suspicious, this one lands somewhere between “professional hit” and “how dumb do you think we are?”
