GIVE A HECK

Dwight Heck

For over 20 years, I lived life by accident: go to work, go home, get paid, then start it all over again the next day, stuck on a proverbial hamster wheel. Through coaching and mentorship, I learned that living life on purpose is far less stressful, and it means I'm happy more days than not. On the Give A Heck Podcast, I bring you guests who found their own way off that hamster wheel, real turning points, setbacks, and mindset shifts you can actually use. My goal is simple: show you how to "LIVE YOUR LIFE ON PURPOSE, & NOT BY ACCIDENT."

7 Principles of Persuasion With Patrick Van Der Burght

Behavioral psychology explains why people say yes, and in part two of this conversation Patrick Van Der Burght walks through all seven universal principles of persuasion and the framework that decides which one to use. Patrick is one of a small number of trainers worldwide licensed directly through the Cialdini Institute, a founding member of that institute, a business partner of Dr Robert Cialdini, and the author of How to Hear YES More Often. He has spent 26 years teaching this material to professionals around the world, and every piece of it rests on research rather than instinct. What you will learn: All seven universal principles of persuasion, explained with real examples The three stage framework of relationship, uncertainty and motivation Why there is no single most powerful principle The optimal average review score range, and why five stars costs you credibility How rounded numbers damage believability, and what to use instead How a principle can be used backwards and work against you Connect with Patrick Van Der Burght: Ethical Persuasion Website: https://ethicalpersuasion.com.au/ Patrick Van Der Burght Profile: https://patrickvanderburght.com How to Hear YES More Often: https://yesmoreoften.com/ Ethical Persuasion Unlocked Podcast: https://ethicalpersuasion.com.au/podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ethicalpersuasion LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-van-der-burght/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ethicalpersuasion/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ethical_persuasion/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ethicalpersuasion Connect with Dwight Heck: Give A Heck Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Work With Me / Be a Guest: https://www.giveaheck.com/contact-us/

Patrick Van Der Burght on the Science of Hearing Yes More Often

What is the number one skill employers want most that almost nobody has been formally taught? Patrick Van Der Burght has spent 27 years studying exactly why people say yes, not through manipulation, but through science, and in this episode he shares what he found. Patrick is a founding member of the Cialdini Institute, one of a small number of Cialdini Institute Licensed Trainers worldwide, a business partner of Dr. Robert Cialdini, and ranked 4th among Cialdini Certified Trainers globally. He has been teaching ethical persuasion since 2000 and is the co-author of How to Hear YES More Often. This is Part 1 of 2. Part 2 covers the seven universal principles of persuasion in depth. What you will learn: Why most professionals are losing opportunities they never even know they lost The three-stage framework: relationship, uncertainty, and motivation Why 150 percent more people acted with loss framing than gain framing The difference between manipulation and ethical persuasion Why persuasion is the third most in-demand soft skill according to the World Economic Forum Connect with Patrick Van Der Burght: Website: https://ethicalpersuasion.com.au Personal Site: https://patrickvanderburght.com Podcast: https://ethicalpersuasion.com.au/podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ethicalpersuasion LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-van-der-burght/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ethicalpersuasion Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ethicalpersuasion/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ethical_persuasion/ Twitter / X: https://x.com/yesmoreoften Free Resources: https://ethicalpersuasion.com.au/free-influence-persuasion/ Discovery Call: https://ethicalpersuasion.com.au/discovery-call/ Connect with Dwight Heck: Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Work With Me / Be a Guest: https://www.giveaheck.com/contact-us/

He Chose His Kids Over Seven Figures, Dwight Heck On Fatherhood

Eight years into joint custody, one question from his own kid changed everything. Dwight Heck closes his three-part solo arc with the decision that was never about his body or his career; it was about the kind of father he was going to be. Dwight starts with his own father, present as a provider but largely absent as a communicator, the same pattern he found himself repeating with his own kids during his first business, until a lightbulb moment led him to take every summer off. The harder decision came later. During one of their near nightly phone calls, one of his kids asked when they got a say in where they lived, and when enough was enough. Dwight said now, and went and got them, choosing to become the present father he never had over pushing a successful financial business toward a seven figure income. In this episode you will hear: ✅ Why Dwight's relationship with his own father shaped the kind of father he decided to become ✅ The exact phone call, eight years into joint custody, that changed everything ✅ Why he chose to shelve a seven figure business dream to become a present, engaged father ✅ What being present actually looked like day to day, from savings baggies to a roller blades deal ✅ How raising five kids largely on his own shaped the financial coach he is today ✅ How this decision closes the thread running through all three decisions in this solo arc Full show notes: [EPISODE URL ON GIVEAHECK.COM, PENDING PUBLISH] Connect with Dwight Heck Give A Heck Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Contact / Be a Guest: https://giveaheck.com/contact-us/ Enjoyed this episode? He Bet On Himself Twice, Dwight Heck On Reinvention

He talked his way into fixing a mainframe he had no training for. Nine years later, a health crisis forced the career change that would define the rest of his life. In this solo episode, Dwight Heck continues the Not by Accident: Three Decisions arc with the story of the professional risk that reshaped everything. Before the mainframe, there was an earlier bet on himself at fifteen and sixteen, an early lesson in entrepreneurship that failed before it ever really started, once he ran the actual cost math. That lesson mattered when, fresh out of an electronics engineering diploma, Dwight volunteered to fix a mainframe connection problem he had no formal training to solve, working until 2 a.m. multiple nights to get it done. Nine years into a leadership role with no real work-life balance, after a grueling client contract and five days without sleep, Dwight's body gave out. He was diagnosed with Bell's palsy, a health crisis serious enough to leave him temporarily unable to drive or fully care for his kids during his joint custody time. That crisis forced the career change into finance, and years later, that decision helped one couple go from ninety days away from financial ruin to their first paid vacation in over a decade. In this episode you will hear: ✅ Why a side hustle at fifteen and sixteen failed before it even started ✅ How Dwight talked his way into fixing a mainframe he had no training to solve ✅ Why nine years in IT consulting, and a leadership role with no real work-life balance, meant one happy client for every nine who were not ✅ What a five day stretch without sleep on a single contract actually cost him ✅ What happened the day Bell's palsy hit, and what the recovery required ✅ Why a friend's mention of finance was not what actually convinced him to make the leap ✅ What that career change produced years later for one couple he coached Full show notes: www.giveaheck.com/podcast Connect with Dwight Heck Give A Heck Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Contact / Be a Guest: https://giveaheck.com/contact-us/ Enjoyed this episode? They Predicted My Breaking Point. Here's What Happened

At fourteen, doctors and well-meaning adults told Dwight Heck what his body would never let him do. Decades later, an injured Achilles tendon couldn't stop him from hiking Zion's Narrows. In this solo episode, Dwight tells a story he has never shared on the podcast before: severe, uncontrolled asthma as a child, a scoliosis diagnosis at 13, and choosing a caged steel body brace over spinal surgery at 14, worn twenty-three hours a day for almost three years. He explains why tenacity is a superpower, how a paper route at 12 proved it, and why an injury three weeks before a planned hike through The Narrows in Zion National Park was never going to stop him from going. This is Part 1 of a new three-part solo arc, Not by Accident: Three Decisions. In this episode you'll hear: ✅ Why severe asthma before rescue inhalers existed shaped a childhood ✅ How a scoliosis diagnosis at 13 led to a three-year choice between surgery and a brace ✅ What wearing a caged body brace twenty-three hours a day actually involved ✅ Why well-meaning caution from adults can do as much damage as a diagnosis ✅ How a paper route at 12 became proof that tenacity is a superpower ✅ Why an injured Achilles tendon didn't stop a hike through Zion's Narrows ✅ What to do with your own version of a ceiling someone else handed you Full show notes: [EPISODE URL ON GIVEAHECK.COM, PENDING PUBLISH] Connect with Dwight Heck Give A Heck Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Contact / Be a Guest: https://giveaheck.com/contact-us/ Enjoyed this episode? She Froze in Her Interview: Janylène Turcotte on the Subconscious Mind

Your subconscious mind is running your decisions, and most people have no idea. Janylène Turcotte spent 25 years as a senior HR executive, the last eight as National Talent Director at Deloitte. She coached hundreds of people through high-stakes interviews. Then her corporate career ended on someone else’s terms, and three days later she sat down for a VP interview at a bank and could not answer a single question. That frozen moment cracked open the gap between knowing and doing, and launched her into a second career as a clinical hypnotherapist trained in Rapid Transformational Therapy under Marisa Peer. JT has now completed over 1,500 sessions with entrepreneurs and senior leaders. Her method, Peel Back, Rewire, Rise, is built on the conviction that you cannot rewire what you have not first peeled back. The Peel Back step, accessing the unconscious stories driving your behaviour, is the step most coaches skip. What you will learn: Why knowing is not the same as doing and what actually lives in the gap What a frozen interview reveals about the unconscious beliefs running your life How nine years of sobriety taught JT more about the mind than any certification Why the Peel Back step is the one most coaches skip and why that matters Why she lost more friends when she stopped fawning than when she stopped drinking The two fears that block most transformations: fear of being alone and fear of judgement Connect with Janylène Turcotte (JT): Website: https://www.hypnocoach.ca Podcast: https://www.hypnocoach.ca/podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzF3eyJFsJgDIIlE5Ow-D1g LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/janylene Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hypnocoach_janylene_aka_jt/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/janylene.turcotte.2025/ Book a free 30-minute strategy call: https://www.hypnocoach.ca/workwithme Connect with Dwight Heck: Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Work With Me / Be a Guest: https://www.giveaheck.com/work-with-me

300 Conversations Later, Dwight Heck on Regret, Money and Purpose

For episode 300, Dwight Heck steps out of the guest chair for the first time to tell the whole story himself. He takes listeners back to Camrose, Alberta, where he grew up with no lessons about money, through raising five kids alone as a single dad, and into the 2002 decision that turned quiet desperation into a 24-year career in financial services. He reflects on five years of guests who shaped the show, from a Holocaust survivor to people who worked alongside Robin Williams, and shares the three hardest lessons 300 conversations have taught him about money: most people are living somebody else’s financial plan, money problems are usually emotional ones wearing a financial costume, and regret is the most expensive thing anyone will ever buy. What you will learn: Why most people are living somebody else’s financial plan What money monsters are and why naming them matters Why regret is the most expensive thing you will ever buy How a 2001 health scare led Dwight into financial services Connect with Dwight Heck: Website: https://www.giveaheck.com Podcast Page: https://www.giveaheck.com/podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@giveaheck Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dwight.heck Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/give.a.heck LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dwight-heck-65a90150/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@giveaheck Twitter / X: https://twitter.com/give_a_heck Work With Me / Be a Guest: https://www.giveaheck.com/work-with-me
