The Mishlei Podcast

Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss

My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

Mishlei 17:17 - Friends vs. Family

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Mishlei 17:17 - Friends vs. Family בְּכׇל עֵת אֹהֵב הָרֵעַ וְאָח לְצָרָה יִוָּלֵד: Length: 1 hour 39 minutes Synopsis: This evening (2/16/26), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned an interesting pasuk about the difference between the love of friends and the reliability of family. The style of this pasuk was unusual and ... unsettling? We came up with a nice set of our own ideas - so many, in fact, that we didn't have as much time to explore the meforshim before the end of shiur. Even though I liked what we said, I still would have preferred to find a solid chiddush in the meforshim, like we usually do. Oh well! We love our meforshim at all times; they aren't just born for times of adversity. ----- מקורות: משלי יז:יז ר"י אבן כספי פירוש ב' - משלי י:א תרגום רס"ג רמב"ם - אבות א:ו אבות ה:טז מצודת דוד רבינו יונה - משלי י:טו; יז:יז ----- The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. Mishlei 25:16-17 - Don't Make Your Friend Vomit (Part 2)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! Mishlei 25:16-17 - Don't Make Your Friend Vomit (Part 2) Length: 36 minutes Synopsis: This morning (2/12/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing the main approach from yesterday. We delved a bit deeper into the derech nigleh, trying to understand exactly what makes a person sick of his friend's presence. But our main goal was to focus on the derech nistar, which I WISH we had more time to explore! I'm especially happy with the idea we learned from Zerachiah Chein. Someone recently asked me whether I find new chidushim in Mishlei. The question had the vibe of, "Don't you get bored?" I answered that we ALWAYS find new chidushim and we rarely get to more than a handful of meforshim before we have to move on. This week was yet another example. --- מקורות: משלי כה:טז-יז זרחיה בן שאלתיאל חן מצודת ציון/דוד מאירי ----- The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. Shlomo ha'Melech's version, however, employs a gustatory mashal rather than an olfactory one. We developed one approach in-depth and a second approach after that. About
