My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). Mishlei 26:4-5 - To Answer or Not to Answer a Fool According to His Foolishness (Part 4) (ד) אַל תַּעַן כְּסִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּוֹ פֶּן תִּשְׁוֶה לּוֹ גַם אָתָּה. (ה) עֲנֵה כְסִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּוֹ פֶּן יִהְיֶה חָכָם בְּעֵינָיו: Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (10/29/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we continued our analysis of the couplet we started last week. We began by refining our understanding of Immanuel ha'Romi and assessing whether and to what extent he and Metzudas David disagree. We then learned the intriguing and nuanced approach of R. Sheishes ben Yitzchak Gerondi. Mishlei 27:1 - Don't Boast About Tomorrow אַל תִּתְהַלֵּל בְּיוֹם מָחָר כִּי לֹא תֵדַע מַה יֵּלֶד יוֹם: Length: 1 hour 49 minutes Synopsis: This evening (10/26/26), in our first Monday Night Mishlei shiur of the season, we started a new chapter! Because this was our first time in this shiur learning a pasuk from what I call Mishei's Second Core, we began with an overview of what makes chapters 25-29 different from what came before. After that, we took up the first pasuk. My fear was that this would be TOO simple of an idea; people would immediately get the two or three ideas, and we'd be done. Instead, we ended up asking nearly 20 questions, then coming up with 7-8 ideas - some of our own, and some from the meforshim. (ה) עֲנֵה כְסִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּוֹ פֶּן יִהְיֶה חָכָם בְּעֵינָיו: Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (10/22/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing what we covered yesterday and exploring a few other original approaches. We then tackled Chazal's explanation from the Gemara through the eyes of the meforshim who adopt it. It took us a while to figure out a coherent explanation, but we finally got there. We concluded by attempting to understand an original approach by Immanuel ha'Romi. (ה) עֲנֵה כְסִיל כְּאִוַּלְתּוֹ פֶּן יִהְיֶה חָכָם בְּעֵינָיו: Length: 47 minutes Synopsis: This morning (10/21/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning one of the juiciest pairs of pesukim in the entire sefer - the pair that nearly got Sefer Mishlei "banned"! If you ever interact with fools, whether in real life or on the internet / social media, then these pesukim are critical. In this first session, we took our time with the translation and questions, then developed one nuanced approach. Mishlei 26:3 - A Rod for the Back of Fools (Part 1) שׁוֹט לַסּוּס מֶתֶג לַחֲמוֹר וְשֵׁבֶט לְגֵו כְּסִילִים: Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/16/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began what appears to be a local cluster of pesukim about how to deal with ksilim (Mishleic fools). Today's pasuk seems to be part of a subgenre within Mishlei about the proper place of corporal punishment. Some might be turned off to that idea, but I believe we discovered an approach that makes it more palatable. We began by reviewing what we covered yesterday and soliciting any new approaches or insights from the members of the shiur. We then learned the commentaries of Metzudas David, Meiri, and R' Sheishes ben Yitzchak Gerondi.
