    Episode 28 - Amenorrhea and heart health

    In this episode, Nicola speaks with Dr. Chrisandra Shufelt to discuss:
    How Dr. Shulfelt came to be interested in amenorrhea and heart health. Ways in which it's reasonable to make comparisons between people who are post-menopausal versus amenorrheic. Low estrogen affects the stretchiness of blood vessels, changes in cholesterol, and can be associated with insulin resistance.

    Dr. Shufelt's next study is looking at which factor underlying amenorrhea might have the biggest effects on heart health. She tells us about some of the results from the study she and colleagues just completed.

    We discuss risk factors for heart disease, traditional and "non-traditional" (i.e. things that mostly affect women).  The impact of cholesterol, and how quickly changes in cholesterol and bone health are seen. 

    Dr. Shufelt tells us about her recently completed study of vascular function in people with amenorrhea versus menopause versus normal menstrual cycles and shares some of the results, including some interesting notes on inflammatory factors.

    We chat about hormone replacement versus birth control pills  and which is preferable and when, what the effects of the placebo week might be...

    Factors that biological females should be aware of with regards to heart attacks, risk factors, and conversations with your doctors around your personal risk.

    In this episode, Nicola and Florence meet Jamie, non-diet fitness Personal Trainer.
    Jamie explains what led her to become a PT and a Zumba instructor, as well as a physio assistant. Jamie shares how she never really felt close to the appearance-focused fitness values in her field, and was practicing a much more compassionate, mindful approach to her job, even before learning about Health At Every Size.

    Together we discuss toxic fitness culture, how to come out of exercise addiction thanks to the acronym FIL (Feel, Impact, Lesson), what Jamie understands as "movement for more" and how she helps her clients reframe their relationship with exercise. We also discuss what led Jamie to stop subscribing to Zumba as an instructor.

Life changing!

I HIGHLY recommend reading Dr. Rinaldi’s book, No Period Now What, in addition to listening to this podcast. Her work is entirely based on research and covers everything you ever need to know about HA.

After having HA for more than 15 years, I’ve almost fully recovered in just one month, something I never thought I could do.

I think this is the best podcast I’ve ever heard. Wow. Talk about a gathering of BRILLIANT women!!! Phenomenal explanation of soooo many experiences in my past. Speechless. “Women are brought up to be human givers not human beings!” 😭😭😭😭😭 Relevant for ALL genders, ages, sizes, and life experiences. I’ve never once ever heard the medical pieces of this discussed. It’s incredible and beautiful and moving and I think you’ll all LOVE it!

Dr. Rinaldi and Florence give you everything you need to know to cure HA. After 15 years without a period I didn’t think it’s a possible to get mine back but I did! They touch on every issue that you deal with in HA and they truly pour their heart and soul into this. You won’t regret going all in!
