Heart Open ConversAsians

Lilian Wee

A thoughtfully curated space where intentional and honest conversations are had and held for and with a community I hold near and dear to my heart: the Asian collective. Every month, you’ll hear a guest join me in conversation, followed by a solo episode in the same month where I share and weave in my reflections and learnings from that conversation.  Together, we’ll exchange stories of our uniquely hard yet beautiful lives, our journeys, learned experiences and lessons, with the hope that it will encourage and empower you to live out your one precious yet nuanced life that is most true and most YOU. I’m that friend you can count on as we walk together on this journey to learn to embrace and make space for all parts of us. You’re welcome here.

Rita Lim-Solhaug: On Mum Life and Creating Communities Through Her Love For Cooking

Send us a text Rita Lim-Solhaug is a globetrotter whose journey from Singapore to Norway in 2010 with her husband, Gisle, and their younger son, Gregory, sparked an evolving love for food and cultural exchange.  Her immigrant journey later saw her moving to Florida followed by Texas, where she continues to bring her love for good and people together through volunteering with groups supporting other immigrants, mummy groups and eventually a cooking club which became her anchor and support system. As she beautifully puts it: “In a foreign land, these friends became our family.” Living across diverse cultures has deepened her understanding of food, inspiring her to enhance her cooking skills. She delights in sharing Singaporean cuisine with friends, weaving tales about the rich food culture and the stories behind each dish.  In this wholesome and relatable conversation we shared, we discussed:   Rita’s love for cooking and her favorite dish How cooking became her respite as she navigated through the early days of migrating across continents for her young familyThe moments when her love for cooking became bigger than herself and morphed into cnnections, friendships and communities A simple and accessible advice for those of you who are considering or are contemplating an immigrant path in your future I hope you’ll enjoy this one as much as I did having it! Jess Goh: On Art As a Way of Life, Accepting Help, and Evolving Friendships

Send us a text On today’s episode, I'm joined by a fellow Singaporean, one who claims herself to be "a very normal human and mama", but yet, there's something about the way she discussed and processed the things we touched on in our conversation that I saw a unique sparkle of a spirit alongside a healthy dose of stoicism that intrigued me.  Jess Goh Wee Teng is an art and crafts explorer who finds inner peace through creative expression.  For Jess, art is more than a hobby; it’s a way of life that brings balance and deeper connections.  Since 2017, she has inspired others through workshops that emphasize being present and engaged in the artistic process. Featured on MediaCorp’s “Get Fit with Me,” Jess also shares her passion as a music and movement educator. We discussed:   Her love for art and how art led her to finding a community of like-minded artists and freelance work as an art instructor getting to do what she loves oftenWhat maintaining a loving and healthy marriage where there is physical distance involved taught her about life, choices and, friendships Concepts of accepting help and how different friendships can serve as our lifeline throughout different stages of our lives I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as I did having it.  Support the show If you love the show, it'll be so appreciated if you could take a few moments to do the following: Rate and Review the show via Apple Podcasts or via https://ratethispodcast.com/hocpodcast Sharing the show or a specific episode with your treasured circles; you may be extending just the support they need by doing so Share/Repost an episode on your Stories and tag me on Instagram @ heartopenconvers_asians. KJ Nasrul: On What It Truly Means to Listen to our Bodies, Recalibrating, and Returning

Send us a text Join me and my beloved friend KJ as she returns to this space for an intimate, vulnerable, and important conversation where she shares details, observations, and insights through one of the scariest and most traumatic health struggles she has lived through these past months.   Other areas we covered:  How her people-pleasing tendencies almost cost her her lifeHow the experience with her doctors on birth control medications became the wake-up call she needed to start listening to her body Discuss what it means to eat and live according to her roots and from the lands of her people 2 simple and short practices we practiced in real-time to introduce the idea and practice of listening to our bodies As I navigate through a transitional period myself, this conversation served as a timely reminder for me to honor my own even if it means to disappoint others.  I'm beyond elated to see KJ return to the pink of health and at the time of this episode being published, she is in "the land of her people", as she so beautifully termed, returning to do the most meaningful and soulful work of conducting wellness retreats. I hope you'll enjoy this one as much as I did having it.
