    The Nice Ones: UFOs, Consciousness & the Alien “Mind Virus” — Peter Stylianou

    What if an alien invasion didn't arrive in spaceships? What if it arrived as an idea? This week, Greg and Ash are joined by filmmaker Peter Stylianou, writer and director of the new UFO/sci-fi horror film THE NICE ONES. Inspired partly by the strange social psychology Peter observed during lockdown, THE NICE ONES explores what he describes as a kind of “mind virus” — people believing they are acting for the greater good while becoming increasingly incapable of seeing themselves reflected in the people they oppose. That idea eventually became something much darker: “Maybe the mind virus is the alien.” But the conversation takes an unexpected turn when Peter reveals an extraordinary personal experience. Years ago in Camden, Peter says he looked at a man he knew and noticed something deeply strange about his eyes. At first, Peter assumed he was wearing novelty contact lenses. Then the man blinked. And his eyes appeared completely normal. Peter doesn't claim to know what happened. He considers unusual lighting, perception, psychology and even the possibility that his own subconscious created an image to warn him about the person. But he also leaves open another possibility: What if he actually saw something? That experience became one of the inspirations behind THE NICE ONES.
