    1-900-TROYPOD: 90s Algorithms

In 2026, you can reach into your pocket and access almost any song or album ever created, just in a few clicks. Back in the day, building out your collection meant you actually had to go outside to a store and buy it. The Wherehouse, Sam Goody, HMV…But sometimes, the store came to you. Back when we used to read magazines, there was a company called Columbia House that would put full, 2,3 page ads with a list of albums that they would let us have for a penny…allegedly. We're diving into that as well as other 90s pay-for-play entertainment, The BOX Music Television and 900 numbers. Get into it. In September, we'll be launching a paid tier of the show for listeners who want an ad-free, extended version of the show. This version of the show will be longer than what will be available in the free feed, you'll get access to the TROY community, and a shoutout on the show as well. Sign up for launch updates at troypodcast.com/newsletter. If you don't want to join, that's cool, we still love you. And so you know, the free version of the show will not be changing. You don't have to worry about losing anything in terms of the content that we've been offering for the past 5 years, buuuuut you'll have to deal with ads. If you're enjoying the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do: Check out all things TROY at troypodcast.com.Get the ad-free version of the show at troypodcast.supercast.comLeave a 5-star rating and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Goodpods or Podchaser.Check out our store Nuthin' But A Tee Thang at teethang.com. Heavy D: Nuttin' But Love (Remix)

No new episode this week, but here's one from the catalog that we think you should get into. Originally released in 2024, on this episode we talked about Mr. Big Stuff, The Heavster, The Overweight Lover, out of Moneyearnin’ Mount Vernon, the diddly, diddly, diddly, diddly, diddly D. One of a small number of people who have done a song with both Michael and Janet Jackson. The man who is pretty much responsible for kicking off Uptown Records, since he was the first act signed to the label, and as an executive at Uptown he's was instrumental in bringing Jodeci, Monifah, Soul For Real and others to the company. Along with DJ Eddie F, Trouble T-Roy and G-Wiz aka The Boyz, he brought us hit after hit. He could do new jack swing, boom bap, reggae, pop...he could do it all. There have been very few hip hop artists who could seamlessly maneuver through so many styles and genres at such a high level, all while never compromising his authenticity. Since his untimely passing in 2011, he's been sorely missed, and that's why we're talking about none other than Heavy D.
