    1 Corinthians 14 - Prophecy

In this sermon from 1 Corinthians 14, we begin exploring Paul’s teaching on spiritual gifts by focusing on the gift of prophecy. The church in Corinth had begun elevating certain gifts for personal status rather than using them in Christ-centered love for the good of the church. Paul redirects them by showing that spiritual gifts are meant to build up the body of Christ. Biblically, prophecy is not primarily about predicting future events. Throughout redemptive history, God’s prophets spoke God’s already-revealed truth into real situations, calling God’s people back to covenant faithfulness. Their message strengthened, encouraged, warned, and gave hope to the community. Paul teaches that prophecy in the gathered church continues this same pattern. It is intelligible, rooted in God’s prior revelation, and aimed at strengthening, encouraging, consoling, and even convicting people so that they turn to worship God. Unlike the Old Testament prophetic office that stood over Israel with unique authority, prophetic speech in the New Testament church happens “shoulder to shoulder,” as believers speak God’s truth in love under the evaluation of the church. Ultimately, the prophetic office reaches its fulfillment in Jesus Christ—the true and better Prophet who perfectly reveals God and calls people into the grace of the new covenant. The call for the church is clear: to love Jesus is to listen to Him. As the church listens to Christ and speaks His truth to one another in love, the body is strengthened, the church is built up, and even outsiders may be convicted and drawn to worship God.
