    13-1: Dirk's A Real Boy Now

    The Dented Puck Podcast was the spark that started a movement.  As our initial effort to grow awareness of our adaptive sport in the hockey community, the podcast was paramount to getting the stories of our peers to the world.  In summer of 2021, The Windy City Blind Hockey Showdown was born.  The Foundation a multi-faceted organization focused on three pillars of awareness, participation, and support.  Our work since pandemic has made "The Dented Puck" synonymous with blind hockey in the US, and positioned ourselves as THE catalysts for blind hockey/s inclusion in the 2034 Salt Lake City Paralympic Games. 🏒 Bring a Team to the Showdown!   We are opening our Windy City Showdown V up to the entire hockey community.  Hosting a 16 team charity event running parallel to our blind hockey tournament.  Grab your beer league buddies, your college buddies, or just some randos from pick-up and support an awesome group of athletes while playing some puck.   Showdown is scheduled for July 16-18 at Edge Ice Arena, in Bensenville, Illinois.     For More Info reach out:  WindyCityShowdown@thedentedpuck.com     Support Blind Hockey Help us continue to grow the game!     About The Dented Puck Podcast & Foundation The premier blind hockey podcast and member of The Hockey Podcast Network, hosted by Team USA Blind Hockey veterans. The show highlights athletes, leadership, and adaptive sports stories while supporting the Dented Puck Foundation’s mission to break down financial barriers for visually impaired and youth hockey players. What is Blind Hockey? Blind Hockey is played by athletes with visual impairments ranging from legally blind (20/200 vision or less) to totally blind, classified under International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) standards. While following core IIHF hockey rules, key adaptations keep the game safe and competitive: The Adapted Steel Puck: Made of hollow 22-gauge steel filled with 8 ball bearings, measuring 5.5 inches across. It rattles loudly and moves slower on the ice, but frequently dents upon impact—giving the podcast its name. 3-Foot Nets: Nets are modified to 3 feet high (instead of standard 4 feet) to keep shots low where goalies can track sound. The Clean Pass Rule: Teams must make one completed pass in the attacking zone before shooting on net. Referees blow a distinct secondary whistle to signal when a team is eligible to score. Player Positioning: All goalies are B1 (totally blind or blindfolded). Athletes with greater functional vision (B3/B4) typically play forward, while lower-vision players (B1/B2) play defense.     One of the highlights of our Try Blind Hockey event in Salt Lake City was the impressively tall skater who was almost ice dancing with his buddies. Preston has been an athlete for a long time, but like many in the visually impaired community, didn't know there was a version of hockey for him. Join us as Tony leads our conversation with Preston, who showed up to our skate in a Mammoth jersey and moves.
