The Tipsy Exchange | Movies, Mysteries & More

Berly Land

The Tipsy Exchange is a comedy podcast hosted by besties Berly and LA, two self-proclaimed '80s babies who pour a drink, raise a toast, and talk about whatever's got them hooked. One week it's true crime and history's strangest mysteries. The next, it's haunted hotels, UFOs, pop culture, and deep dives into the movies and TV shows we grew up on. Every episode kicks off with a toast and runs on tangents, inside jokes, and a genuinely alarming number of sidebars. It all depends on the tipsy level. Listening to The Tipsy Exchange is like pulling up a chair at happy hour with your funniest friends. We finish each other's sentences, call each other out, mispronounce everything with confidence, and thirst over Pedro Pascal with zero shame. We don't claim to be experts (though we do bring some on for our Ask the Expert episodes), but we do our research, we have a good time, and we'll always tell you what we really think. Hang out with us! Leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast app. It really does help new listeners find the show, and we read every one. And remember to follow the show! Please drink responsibly. CURRENTLY ON HIATUS: Find Berly and LA on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, our Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Happy Hour: Wrap-Up, Updates & Everything That Made Us Happy | The Tipsy Exchange

A note from Berly and LA: The Tipsy Exchange is on hiatus while we focus on our new project, Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast (stupid day jobs, keeping us from podcasting full time). Some of our episodes, particularly the AMAs and happy hours, didn't survive our move to a new hosting platform, but we managed to save this one for you. Come hang out with us at Denim-wrapped Nightmares, and in the meantime, the rest of the Tipsy Exchange back catalog is here waiting for you. Cheers! Pour one more, because it's happy hour! To close out the year, Berly and LA look back at the episodes we recorded, share updates on what's happened since, and own up to a few tipsy mistakes along the way. First, the things that made us happy lately. There's a Christmas tree debate (one of us loves decorating, and one of us… really does not), a sexy Santa showdown, some strong opinions on Harry Styles vs. the older gentlemen of Hollywood, and a Chris Evans relationship update that had Twitter in a tizzy. We also have a satirical article about the Illuminati that made us chuckle. Then we run through the season's episodes. Berly gives her spoiler-free review of The Rings of Power season one, with one very specific complaint about elf hair. We check in on the Somerton Man (sadly, no update), and share a big development in the UFO world since our revisited episode. LA also finally started the new Interview with the Vampire series. (She was supposed to finish it. She did not.) We react to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Did Namor's ankle wings live up to the hype? Did we cry? You'll have to listen. Plus, we share news about The Sandman and some heartbreaking news about Lovecraft Country, including what the showrunner had planned for season two. And of course, there are corrections. It turns out one of the shows we talked about wasn't called what we said it was. And we owe a certain Supernatural actor an apology about his shirt-to-shirtless ratio. This week's toast: Cheers to everything that made us happy this season, including Namor, the Winchester boys, and all of you for listening! Tell us what you think! What made you happy this year? What's been your favorite Tipsy Exchange episode? Tell us in the comments, and then come find us at Denim Wrapped Nightmares! Lovecraft Country: The Real History and Horror Behind HBO's Series | The Tipsy Exchange

Editor's note: This episode was recorded before Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment against a former partner in December 2023. Our comments about him in this episode don't reflect how we feel today. This one's for you, Twitter! Lovecraft Country is the first episode topic ever recommended by a listener, and Berly has been trying to get everyone to watch this show. LA finally did. Only one other person she asked actually followed through. We see you. Fair warning: that first episode will have you wondering if you started the wrong show. Stick with it. We talk about why Lovecraft Country could have gone completely off the rails and didn't. We cover the historical events it weaves in (some of which we're embarrassed to admit we never learned in school), the production design, the monsters (the creature with all the eyes has a surprising real-life reference), and the most terrifying pair of little girls on television. We also talk about the episode that took a beloved character on a wild journey through time with a nod to a certain '80s adventure franchise. And the wigs. So many fabulous wigs. Then Berly gives LA a crash course on H.P. Lovecraft himself: who he was, what his work meant to horror, and why his legacy is… complicated. She also explains how the author of Lovecraft Country turned that legacy on its head. We compare the show to the book, too, from the characters the series reimagined to one who doesn't exist in the book at all. Plus, the music! Somehow the modern needle drops work here in a way they absolutely did not in Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby. Along the way, you'll hear a confession about looking up spoilers, a plea to showrunner Misha Green for more redheads, and our hopes for another season. Spoiler warning: We spoil the whole series in this one, so watch it first if you care! This week's toast: From episode seven of Lovecraft Country: "Here's to girls like us who know when to create and when to destroy." Salute! Cheers! Tell us what you think! Did you watch Lovecraft Country? What was your favorite episode, and which monster freaked you out the most? What should we cover next? The Sandman's Sleepy Sickness: The Real Epidemic Behind the Netflix Series | The Tipsy Exchange

The Sandman is finally on Netflix! LA is still making her way through it, and Berly has one complaint: not enough Stephen Fry. He's in it! There just needs to be more of him. Otherwise, we're here for all of it: Tom Sturridge's brooding Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, a Corinthian we know we shouldn't want, and a Desire we can't wait for LA to meet. But did you know the mysterious sleeping sickness in the show is based on a real epidemic? In The Sandman, when Dream is captured, people around the world fall into a strange, endless sleep. In real life, right after World War I, a bizarre brain illness swept across the globe at the same time as the Spanish flu. Some people fell into a deep sleep they couldn't wake from. Others froze in place, trapped inside their own bodies for decades. And then, just as suddenly as it appeared, it vanished. Berly walks us through what doctors discovered, the scientist who gave it its name (we would not want a disease named after us), and the modern theory about what might have caused it. There's also one prediction about its return that is not great news. Along the way, you'll hear a Neil Gaiman tangent (including the time he wrote to us to tell us we were wrong), a George R.R. Martin world-building appreciation moment, a debate about phenomenon vs. phenomena (and alumni vs. alumnus vs. alumna), and a callback to our dancing plague episode. Plus, we have some pointed advice for the Pentagon's new UFO office. Just open it up already. This week's toast: From Dream in The Sandman: "It is sometimes a mistake to climb. It is always a mistake never even to make the attempt." Cheers! And we close with some wisdom from Mindy Kaling that every tired person can relate to: "There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it." Tell us what you think! Are you watching The Sandman? Who's your favorite of the Endless? Had you heard of the real sleepy sickness before? Tell us in the comments! Please drink responsibly.  Miss Berly and LA? Namor Amor: Who Is Namor? Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Preview | The Tipsy Exchange

Imperius Rex! Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is almost here, and with it comes one of Marvel's oldest and most complicated characters: Namor the Sub-Mariner. So this week, Berly and LA dive in. Sorry. We had to. First, a Phase 4 check-in. We talk She-Hulk (campy, cute, and not for everyone), Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and the Werewolf by Night trailer that dropped at D23. Then Berly gives us the lowdown on Namor. He's been around for more than 80 years, he's arrogant, he has a temper, and he's both a hero and a villain depending on the day. He also has a very iconic battle cry and, most importantly, tiny little ankle wings. We need those ankle wings to make it into the movie. We also cover his surprising powers, his unexpected stint in the corporate world, and why the MCU might be changing where he comes from. Then LA takes us deep into the Aztec mythology that could inspire Namor's underwater kingdom in Wakanda Forever. There's a water goddess (we'll call her "Chow," for all our sakes), an afterlife based on how you die rather than how you lived, and an ancient city with a fascinating real-world connection. We also talk about how much we love that the MCU is bringing real cultures into its storytelling, not just representation on screen. Of course, we also get emotional talking about how the film will honor Chadwick Boseman. Just the trailer music gives us chills. We share our theories on who will wear the Black Panther suit next, and we get excited to meet Riri Williams. Plus, we assess Namor's new actor very thoroughly. Big brown eyes, big smile, broad back, green booty shorts. We're here for it. This week's toast: From Namor himself in Marvel Mystery Comics #3: "You are too lovely to die, even though you are an American." Cheers! And we close with a toast in honor of Chadwick Boseman and his reminder to stop and savor your triumphs. Rest in power, King. Tell us what you think! Who do you think will be the new Black Panther? Are you Team Namor or Team Wakanda? And will those ankle wings make the cut? Tell us in the comments! Please drink responsibly.  Miss Berly and LA? Vampires in Media, Part 2: Our Favorite Vampires of All Time | The Tipsy Exchange

Vampire month rolls on! Last episode, we covered the movies that got us hooked (and possibly warped us a little). This week, it's time for our favorite vampires in media. Berly tried to pick some LA hadn't heard of. LA did not try to do that. At all. Each host brings three favorites. LA starts with the vampire who inspired her childhood obsession: a little girl who will never grow up but is definitely a grown woman on the inside. We discuss how the new series may change her, and LA admits she's a harsh critic. Then there's the scene-stealing Greek vampire from a certain mockumentary series who LA would watch even if they killed off everyone else. She's also the reason LA got over the show adding a woman to the original trio. Finally, LA picks a campy, dramatic Netflix heir whose "best friendship" with a werewolf was, uh, very close. (Berly would like everyone to know LA missed the subtext. Again.) Berly opens with a deep cut: a movie about the making of one of the oldest vampire films ever, with a twist that's so good she paid $50 for the DVD. Next is the leather-clad, gun-toting heroine who, when everyone else wanted to be a Trinity, Berly wanted to be. And finally, as LA knew she would, Berly brings the hard-partying Irish vampire from a certain comic book adaptation. She has a picture of him. Of course she does. Then we fire off our honorable mentions, including several True Blood favorites, a certain bleached-blond Buffy vampire (until season six), a daywalker, and an energy vampire who sucks the life out of every room. Along the way, we try to figure out whether Matt Smith is hot (it depends on the scene), there's a naked Jensen Ackles sighting, and we finally settle the Arwen and Aragorn family tree debate from our Morgoth episode. Plus, a reminder that Idiocracy is slowly becoming a documentary. This week's toast: From Deacon in the What We Do in the Shadows movie: "When you turn into a vampire, you become very sexy." Cheers! And we close with a quote from Eric Northman: "When you dream of me, dream of nice things." Tell us what you think! Who's your favorite vampire of all time? Did we miss yours? (Be honest.) The episode starts in 1983 Lawrence, Kansas where four-year-old Dean is absolutely not qualified to carry baby Sam like a football down the stairs while their house burns and mom Mary gets pinned to the ceiling. Vampires in Media, Part 1: Interview with the Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula & a Real "Vampire" Grave | The Tipsy Exchange

October is here (the best month, besides our birthday month), and AMC's Interview with the Vampire series is about to premiere. So naturally, we're declaring October vampire month! This is part one of our Vampires in Media series, and we're starting with the stories that got us hooked. First, some real-life vampire news. Archaeologists in Poland uncovered a 17th-century grave where the villagers clearly did not want the woman buried there getting back up. The details are wild, and Sam and Dean would have handled it way differently. Then we each confess our first vampire obsession. LA's is Interview with the Vampire, the 1994 movie she made all her friends watch (repeatedly), and the reason why involves some serious feelings she's not quite ready to unpack on air. She also has thoughts on the new series cast and how they aged up a certain character. Berly's is Bram Stoker's Dracula, which fueled a childhood vampire-hunting phase that her dad supported way more than you'd expect. She also shares a story that'll make you look at Dracula differently: Bram Stoker claimed his novel wasn't fiction, and his research trail is as spooky as the book itself. Plus, we rank the cast of both movies (Gary Oldman! Brad Pitt! Antonio Banderas deserved more screen time!) and gently acknowledge that Keanu has had better roles. We also ask the big question: were the movies we watched as '80s and '90s kids way too adult for us? (Our moms rented us some interesting choices.) And we'd like to thank all of these films for being very, very horny. This week's toast: From Lestat himself: "Don't be a fool for the devil, darling." Cheers! And we close with some wisdom from Bram Stoker: "We learn from failure, not from success." Tell us what you think! What was your first vampire obsession? Are you watching the new Interview with the Vampire series? And be honest: what totally inappropriate movie did your parents let you watch as a kid? Tell us in the comments, and come back for part two, where we reveal our favorite vampires! Evidence of UFOs Revisited: The Pentagon's New UFO Office & James Webb Telescope | The Tipsy Exchange

Last episode, LA brought Berly an update on the Somerton Man. Now it's Berly's turn. We're revisiting one of our favorite season one episodes, Evidence of UFOs and Extraterrestrials, because a lot has happened since then. Yes, including more ʻOumuamua talk. It still looks like Mr. Hankey. The X-Files and Men in Black are basically real now. Kind of. Berly walks us through how Tom DeLonge's leaked Navy footage eventually led Congress to hold its first public UFO hearings in decades, and how the Pentagon opened a brand-new office dedicated to chasing down unexplained sightings. Sadly, it's not called MIB, so Will Smith will need a new theme song. We meet the man in charge (his résumé is intimidating, and we gave him a very professional assessment, personality pending), and we look back at the government's last official UFO investigation and the suspiciously convenient conclusions it reached. Then we head out to deep space with the James Webb Space Telescope, which is looking so far back in time that it's giving us an existential crisis. Along the way, we debate whether octopuses are secret alien agents (Berly's still convinced), and we discuss Gillian Anderson's hotness across multiple series. LA's mom has a Tommy Lee Jones story, and there's a Netflix documentary recommendation. Plus, Berly confesses her new Supernatural obsession. One angel in particular, if we're being honest. There's also a Boys check-in with Jensen Ackles, a House of the Dragon side-eye, and a formal application to join the Pentagon's UFO team. Call us. This week's toast: From Agent K in Men in Black: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it." Cheers! And we close with some advice from Scully: "Mulder, the internet is not good for you." Tell us what you think! Do you think the government is finally telling us the truth about UFOs, or just a little bit of it? What would you want the James Webb telescope to find? And are octopuses aliens? (The correct answer is yes.) Tell us in the comments! Please drink responsibly.
