When 8-year-old Relisha Rudd disappeared from a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C. in 2014, nobody noticed. By the time authorities formally declared Relisha “missing,” 18 days had passed since she’d been spotted at school or the shelter where her family lived. Seven years later, Relisha has never been found. Through the Cracks investigates gaps in our society and the people who fall through them, and in this first season, host Jonquilyn Hill asks if Relisha’s disappearance was, as the city later claimed, unpreventable. From WAMU and PRX.

Relisha Rudd

Relisha’s story has been with me since she went missing. Living in the DMV, I kept up with her story while it was in the news. The facts of the case were so baffling and heartbreaking. Hearing the family’s story, beyond the news, brings the humanization that was needed. Relisha should never have fell threw the cracks. Along with the thousands of other children that go missing. Thank you for shining a light and keeping her name alive. We’ll continue to say Relisha Rudd.

The system failed this family but...

How could her immediate family not know where she is for 18 days?!? I couldn’t finish this season because absolutely no one on the podcast questioned the family. Every good investigator says to start with those closest to the missing child/victim. Infuriating and heartbreaking story.
