New Grotesqueries: Jodorowsky, Lynch, and Us

Is Dune a film-able book? It's been tried multiple times and by some of cinema's most unique filmmakers. Daunting? Certainly. But that doesn't stop our hosts. Come along as Ryan and Ben examine the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune and David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel. Did you know that you almost got a naked Sting on film? Why do we keep finding clocks in the sand? The delirium is nearly over. Let's all take a breather until SpiceCast returns to talk about Denis Villeneuve's adaptation after it is released, tentatively in the fall of 2021. Here's to it (hopefully) being worth the wait.

If You Get It, You Get It

Kids sure grow up fast in the desert. The Dune post mortem has arrived. Ryan and Ben are back to lay Frank Herbert's epic novel to rest. In the Fremen way, no tears are shed. The full reaction to this touchstone of science fiction were five episodes in the making. Through board meetings, biker gang hijinx, and emotional abuse from teenage boys, our fearless hosts stuck with it to the very end. And they're not done yet. Next up they'll tackle David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky.

    Coffee Carts and Emotional Voids

Want to learn how to start a family in one simple step? This episode of SpiceCast is for you! Ryan and Ben started a "cold read" podcast so you don't have to and this time around our dynamic Dune-reading duo look for the plot that they're sure has been lost around here somewhere. Frank Herbert, please report to the lost and found. Come along as our antiheroes gauge the strange emotional responses of the recently widowed, revel in the importance of editors, pine over the lost potential of the pre-Jedi, and coffee. Oh, the coffee.

    Biker Gang Delirium

The delirium is setting in. After briefly rebranding as a Fatboy Slim podcast, Ryan and Ben are back on their Dune bulls*** and trying to decipher the indecipherable. What exactly do biker gangs have to do with Frank Herbert's epic space saga? How does Bob's Burgers get roped into the conversation? And is Dune really a comedy? These questions and more can invade your brain in episode 4 of SpiceCast! Fillissin follasy to you all.

    Confused Together

It's episode 3 of SpiceCast and Ryan is here with his tail between his legs apologizing for leading Ben down a sandworm-sized hole of false impressions in episode 2. Perhaps more confused than ever (though slightly more enthusiastic?), our fearless hosts continue to look for meaning—or at least sense—in Frank Herbert's Dune.

    Thopter to Nowhere

Ryan and Benjamin are back with their Dune hot takes in episode 2 of SpiceCast. What has happened in the book so far? Is the board meeting over? Who do you have to sweet talk to get a name like Duncan Idaho? The curmudgeonly journey into Frank Herbert's epic novel has truly begun.
