    Episode 65: Project Hail Mary / The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

    Two of this year’s biggest hits so far are galaxy-spanning adaptations of popular works. The first is, PROJECT HAIL MARY, based on the popular novel by the author of THE MARTIAN, Andy Weir. The Brothers give their thoughts on the film, discussing Ryan Gosling’s performance, its flashback structure, and where it fits in the genre of “science-forward” space exploration stories. The second is THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE, the hit sequel to the 2023 animated film, based on some of the most popular video games of all time.     Episode 62: Marty Supreme / Best Films of 2025

    What are we meant to think of Marty Mauser? Is he a paragon of American individualism or a scammer hellbent on getting his own way? Could he perhaps be both? The Brothers ponder these questions as they review Josh Safdie’s MARTY SUPREME, his new sports drama set in 1952 and starring Timothée Chalamet as the eponymous table tennis star. They discuss the film’s impact, Chalamet’s performance, the visual style, the moral vantage point, and, most importantly, the film’s commentary on America.     Episode 61: Hamnet / 5 Years of the Podcast

    Chloe Zhao’s HAMNET is one of the most buzzed about films of the year, emotionally charged, featuring acclaimed performances, and offering a portrayal of the biographical origins of Shakespeare’s HAMLET in his marriage and grief at the loss of his son, Hamnet. But is the film a triumph of biographical filmmaking and a testimony to the power of art, or is it an overwrought melodrama with little new to say? The Brothers dig into the film’s performances, disagreeing on the film’s success. They discuss its relationships to other Shakespeare films, its thematic resonances, and references to other filmmakers including Terrence Malick and Lars Von Trier.
