  1. Episode 1

    Ep.126 The Bronze Age Collapse

The books of Samuel begin during one of the most dramatic periods in ancient history. Long before Samuel anointed Israel's first kings, the ancient world experienced the Bronze Age Collapse—a period marked by drought, famine, earthquakes, invasions, population migrations, and the fall of great empires. In this episode, we explore the rise and fall of the Bronze Age world, the interconnected trade networks that united Egypt, the Hittites, Babylonia, and other great powers, and the events that led to their decline. We examine the archaeological evidence for prolonged drought in the eastern Mediterranean, the role of the Sea Peoples, the collapse of trade, and the emergence of the Iron Age. Finally, we connect these world-changing events to the biblical period of the Judges and consider how the collapse of the old world may have created the conditions for Israel's rise as a kingdom under Samuel, Saul, and David. 2. Episode 2

    Ep.127 Before There Were Kings

The Book of Samuel marks one of the greatest turning points in biblical history, bridging the chaotic era of the Judges with the rise of Israel's monarchy. In this episode, we explore the historical setting surrounding Samuel's birth, the spiritual decline of Israel, the corruption of the priesthood under Eli, and the important role prophets played in the ancient world. We examine why Samuel is remembered as both the last judge and one of Israel's greatest prophets, how the Tabernacle at Shiloh became the center of worship for the nation, and why God was preparing Samuel long before Saul and David would ever become kings. This episode lays the historical and cultural foundation for one of the Bible's most influential figures and the beginning of Israel's transition from judges to kings. Highlights Israel's Transition from the Judges to the Kings Samuel, Prophets, and the Tabernacle at Shiloh Eli, the High Priest, and Israel's Spiritual Decline Hannah's Prayer and the Birth of Samuel Preparing the Prophet Who Would Anoint Israel's Kings Scripture Referenced Exodus 20:18–19 Numbers 18:1–7 Numbers 18:15 Numbers 25:11–13 Joshua 18:1 1 Samuel 1:1–18 2 Chronicles 35:18   If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and follow The History of the Bible on your favorite podcast platform.
