I visit with guests about topics like loyalty, honesty, authenticity, courage, integrity and resilience.  I come from a cowboy raised and egghead educated background. I’ve saddled and rode a horse, been on multiple cattle drives, fed cattle in 40 below temperatures, worked cattle in a corral, put up hay in 100 degree temperatures, fixed fence …. you name it … I attended high school at a prestigious private school. I got a College degree. I spent 31 years as a national politic operative, owned my own business and spent 13 years as a police officer.  My interesting life has lead me to the conclusion that the world is made up of cowboys and eggheads. I believe that we should have a few more cowboys than eggheads. Get ready, because you’re about to be pulled into the story of my life……

Feeling overlooked and betrayed, Sam makes a quiet decision to stop caring. He continues attending practices and finishes the season, but emotionally, he has already walked away. Decades later, that moment remains difficult to confront—not only because of what Kane did, but because of how Sam responded. Halftime is the turning point of the story: the moment disappointment becomes defiance, and defiance slowly becomes surrender.     Send us Fan Mail Chapter Four: We’ll Find You a Place By the summer before his senior year, Sam Fischer is no longer trying merely to survive Jim “Killer” Kane’s football program. After long days working in the hayfield and months of strength training alongside his younger brother, Will, he returns to Mount Michael heavier, stronger and convinced that he is finally ready to contribute. Moved from tight end to offensive guard, Sam attacks the opening practices determined to make himself impossible to ignore. After failing on his first attempt against the team’s largest lineman, Eric Swanson, he immediately resets and delivers the collision the drill demands. Assistant coach George Roshone notices. Soon, Kane does too. During another practice, Sam drives a defender several yards backward on a double-team block. Kane responds with the words Sam has waited years to hear: “If you keep that up, we’ll find a place for you to play.” It is not a guarantee of a starting position. It is something more important: recognition from the man whose judgment matters most. Later that day, Kane calls Sam over to work briefly with the first-string offense. In Chapter Four of Killer Kane, years of waiting appear to be leading somewhere. Sam enters his final season believing he has earned an open door—and trusting that when the games begin, Kane will call his name.     Send us Fan Mail Chapter Three: Inside Kane’s Program There was no gradual introduction to Jim “Killer” Kane’s football program. You entered it, and the program began measuring you. In Chapter Three of Killer Kane, Sam Fischer steps inside a system built on discipline, repetition, physical force and unquestioned authority. Kane teaches every assignment, demonstrates every block and demands that his players execute the same plays again and again until they are correct. The opponent may know what is coming. Kane’s philosophy is that they should still be powerless to stop it. For the starters, trust is demonstrated through playing time. For the reserves, Kane’s judgment is harder to read. A position in a drill, the absence of an insult or a rare word of approval can become evidence that a player still has a chance. In a world where praise is scarce, even the smallest acknowledgment carries enormous value. Through punishing practices, memorable collisions, wind sprints and years spent waiting for an opportunity, Sam proves that he can survive Kane’s program. But survival is no longer enough. The question becomes whether Kane will ever decide that he is useful enough to play. Long before Sam arrived at Mount Michael, life on his family’s ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills had already taught him the basic rules: finish the job, keep your word and do not stop simply because you are tired or uncomfortable. His parents—especially his father—poured the foundation. Kane would later reinforce it until those lessons became inseparable from the man Sam became. In Chapter Two of Killer Kane, Sam leaves the ranch for Mount Michael Benedictine High School, a Catholic boarding school 310 miles from home. It is a world of monks, schedules, homesickness, hidden televisions and small rebellions—an institution that demands young boys adjust, endure and finish. Then there is Kane: physically imposing, emotionally inaccessible and unquestionably in command. He controls the practices, calls the plays, decides who belongs and reveals almost nothing about the man behind the coach. Before Sam can earn a place on Kane’s football field, he must first learn how to survive Kane’s world.
