Ep 10: End of Season Special - The 70's

The Hawkbinge NEW YEAR SPECIAL episode!

We're at the end of 2021 and we find Hawkwind at the end of Calvert's tenure, the end o f their Charisma contract, at the end of the 1970's and possibly at the end of the band. What better time to take stock of the state of play both with Hawkwind, but also with Matt, who has been taking this first-time journey through the weird world of Hawkwind experiencing 9 studio albums and multiple changes along the way. What does he make of it all?

And, if we're going to be chatting about the 1970's, who better to ask along for the ride than the man who quite literally wrote the book on Hawkwind in the 70's, Mr Joe Banks himself.

Along with our very special guest we choose some favourite tracks not released on those studio albums, debate Matt's most dissed tracks from season 1 and, as a prelude to season 2, we get into a bit of "Live 79" alongside chats about Joe's magnificent book and the beautiful chaos that it is Hawkwind in the 1970's.

Thank you for coming on this journey with us, see you again for season 2...

    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

    Ep 9: PXR5

    Ep 9: PXR5

"This is the last but one"

So reads the cryptic message on the back of PXR5, the final Hawkwind studio release of the 1970's, the final release with Robert Calvert and the final release on the Charisma label. It's also the final release of season 1 of Hawkbinge but not the final Hawkbinge release of year - watch this space...

In this episode Matt & Andy explore the music of 1978, the somewhat nebulous status of the band at this point, choose tracks for the Sessions and Master Playlists on Spotify, offer up some track selections of their own with their turntable picks and, above all, attempt to resist the temptation to use that album cover as a guide for wiring their houses,

This episode also marks the release of volume 3 of the Hawkbinge Sessions playlist on Spotify, including such bands as Mythic Sunship, Steve Hackett, Killing Joke, Lee 'Scratch Perry, Jan Hammer and The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble alongside Matt's favourite Hawkwind picks from Quark, Hawklords and PXR5.

Season 2 of Hawkbinge coming in 2022.

Ep 8: Hawklords, 25 Years On

Ep 8: Hawklords, 25 Years On

Hawkbinge: Reality you can rely on.
Yes, Hawkbinge is back! Or is it Bingelords? If so, why? And what will it be next time?

All these things and more in this episode as Matt & Andy explore this album released during a most confusing period of Hawkwind history.  On top of the music and art, a global super organisation bent on a new world order is revealed to the world as we dig in to the fabulous story of Pan Transcendental Industries.

As ever, we take a look at the music of 1978, that striking cover art and see if we can rationalise exactly why this whole thing came about. As a rule, Hawkbinge is 'music' rather than 'band history' but in this case it's a story that cannot be ignored. Also, the Hawkbinge Sessions and Hawkbinge Master playlists on Spotify are augmented by the music Andy & Matt have been listening to, and Matt's picks from "25 Years On". Or "Hawklords". Or whatever else they might be calling it these days.

Ep 7: Quark, Strangeness and Charm

Ep 7: Quark, Strangeness and Charm

Hawkbinge is back with no less than two hours of Quark, Strangeness and Charm.  Yes, once more our attempt at being concise has resulted in a dramatically longer episode than the last. In this episode: Hawkwind's influence on punk is discussed as we enter 1977 and those Calvert lyrics are the focus of much of the album chat.

Andy & Matt go thru some messages from listeners and choose tracks from other bands they've been listening to for the Hawkbinge Sessions Playlist as #3 gets underway. As usual, Hawkbinge shines a light on the releases of 1977, takes a look at that cover art from Hipgnosis and selects tracks for both the Sessions and Master Playlists on Spotify.

Ep 6.5: Somnia, A Nexus Event Special

Ep 6.5: Somnia, A Nexus Event Special

Hawkbinge was last seen back in 1976, moving steadily towards 1977 and the forthcoming "Quark, Strangeness & Charm" episode (in edit mode as this is written). Then, boom! A new Hawkwind album drops. We are scheduled to arrive at "Somnia" for a full deep-dive episode in mid-2024, but clearly this new Hawkwind music needs to be addressed...

So, we fired up the DeLorean and traveled 44 years into the future, making a stop along the way to pick up our first ever Hawkbinge guest, gave the album a listen or two on release day and quickly recorded a super-hot-take on this shiny new record. No line-up, no turntable picks, no weeks of prep, no look back at the releases of the year - it's straight up "Somnia" all the way.

Join not one, not two, but three new listeners as we react to "Somnia", the new Hawkwind album.

This is "Somnia, A Hawkbinge Nexus Event Special" in the company of the one & only Mr Joe Banks, author of "Days of the Underground", the tale of Hawkwind and their influence on British culture in the 1970's.

The sacred timeline will be restored shortly.

Ep 6: Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music

Ep 6: Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music

Hawkbinge weighs in with a mammoth 115 minute podcast about this transitional and rather divisive album in the Hawkwind discography - there's just so much to get into about this music and the rather sliding-doors time period in band history. Several references to Banks' & Abraham's excellent coverage of this fascinating chapter. Where do we end up? Surprises await.
We also have a bit of an addendum to the Warrior on the Edge of Time episode thanks to corrections sent in from listeners learned in the deepest Hawkwind lore.
In regular features, we look at the surprisingly un-transitional album releases of 1976, check the personnel in this particularly fluid edition of the Hawkwind line-up and stare long and hard at the album artwork. We also have a rather rambling set of turntable picks (Andy's fault) to complete the Hawkbinge Sessions Playlist Vol. 2 on Spotify.

Future Past

Great show guys.
I like listening to the two of you and your takes on Hawkwind’s music from an old fan and a new student.
I have followed them, starting in the early 1980s, when I found out Lemmy was in the band before Motörhead.
My first album was Space Ritual, and I have been a big fan ever since.
Thank you and Onward you go!
