Why Your Black Friday Sale Is Losing You Money in Your Esthetician Business

Replaying this one right on time. Before you finalize a Black Friday offer, listen to what the math actually looks like for a solo esthetician. Brittany starts with the retail history most people don’t know, including why the holiday is called Black Friday in the first place and what that doorbuster TV really costs the store. Spoiler: the big box retailers are still making a killing on every discounted item, which is exactly why you cannot win a price war against them. From there she gets into the distinction that changes everything, which is that a spa and a solo business are two different models. A spa owner can discount because other people are generating revenue at the same time. You cannot, because when you discount your time you have simply earned less in a fixed number of hours. That leads to her firmest rule: never discount services for current clients, because they were already coming. She lays out what does work instead, including short new-client offers, win-back offers for clients who have fallen off, and the gift card structure where the bonus goes to a friend or toward retail rather than back to the buyer. She also names the cash flow trap that catches people every year, where a big influx arrives in November, gets spent by December, and leaves you performing services for free all the way through spring. Plus the small, genuine ways to thank your clients that cost under ten dollars, why a big retail sale tends to flatten your product income in February, and what it really means if your clients don’t buy products. What the Estheticians Making Money Right Now Do Differently

Pulling this one back out because it’s only gotten more relevant. If you’re watching other estheticians seemingly thrive while your own numbers sag, this episode answers the question underneath all of it: what are they actually doing differently? Brittany has been in business for herself since 2017 and graduated college into the 2008 housing crisis, so she’s watched a few economies turn. And she’s clear that plenty of solo esthetician business owners are making 15 and 16 thousand a month right now. The difference comes down to five things. Deep connection with their clients, maintained consistently and not abandoned the second money gets tight, because clients can feel when you need something from them. Total clarity on the results they deliver and how to get there, with marketing that says so. A network where every single person knows exactly what they do, not just the inner circle. A refusal to quit that shows up as trying three new approaches instead of one, and trying each like it will actually work. And the ability to problem solve without panicking. Brittany also gives permission for something rarely said out loud, which is that if your esthetician business can’t pay your bills yet, taking another job is a smart financial decision, not a failure, and it lets you show up for your clients as a human instead of someone who needs to sell groceries. Plus a story about a quiet client Brittany was convinced didn’t like her, and the day she figured out she’d had it backwards the whole time. She Didn’t Love My Advice. She Did It Anyway. ACTUAL ESTHETICIANS EARNING MORE Emily Schirmer

Emily is a great esthetician. She trained other estheticians at Heyday, she gets real results in the treatment room, and she had a clientele that adored her and books that were mostly full. So why did she need a business coach? Because being excellent at facials and running a profitable esthetician business are two different skills, and Emily had a gap in two of the three things Brittany works on with every client: retail sales and a higher-end service. This conversation is the honest version of what coaching actually looks like. Not a magic wand, but a long list of small, unglamorous steps done consistently for weeks while you measure what’s working. Brittany is upfront about something you don’t usually hear from a coach, which is that Emily often did not like the advice. She had the reaction most of Brittany’s most successful clients have, somewhere between “that’s it?” and “I really don’t think that’s going to do anything.” She did it anyway. Emily also shares what she did before esthetics and why that background gave her the grit this work requires, and how she kept going after a medical issue derailed her start. If you’ve been waiting to feel confident or convinced before you take action in your spa business, Emily’s story is the proof you can be skeptical, uncomfortable, and successful all at the same time. How to Niche Down in Your Solo Esthetician Business Without Losing Your Income

Everyone tells you to niche down. Almost nobody tells you when, or what it actually costs you emotionally. In this solo episode Brittany walks through both. First the rule she gives every client: do not take a service off your menu just because you’re tired of it. You wait until demand for the work you actually want is so high that you can’t fit new clients in, and until then you market like your life depends on it. She explains why offering lashes and waxing and facials all at once quietly destroys your profitability as a solo esthetician, why mismatched service times wreck your books more than any pricing problem, and why it takes six months to a year of consistent marketing before you see your books shift, which is normal and not a sign that nothing is working. She also says the thing nobody wants to hear, which is that at some point you simply have to meet new people, and there is no easier way. Then she goes into the part of niching down that nobody talks about: telling clients you’ve had for three, five, six years that you no longer offer the service that brought them to you. It can feel like throwing away someone who gave you everything. Brittany shares the reframe that helps, stories from her own career about teams she loved and left behind, and permission to feel all of it. If you’re sitting on a menu that no longer fits your spa business, this is your roadmap and your pep talk. ACTUAL ESTHETICIANS EARNING MORE: Tyler Card

Tyler Card is the first male guest on this podcast, and he brought a story worth hearing. Tyler is a licensed esthetician and a chemist, the owner of Skinfinity in Columbia, Missouri, an international Skin Games award winner for acne and compromised barriers, and the person behind the skincare crash courses you've probably seen on Instagram. He came out of high school with no plan and nobody in his family who had gone to college, found skincare while working the front desk at Massage Envy, fried his own face with a 30-step routine, and decided during the pandemic that if he made it through he was going to esthetician school. He did, then went back and finished the chemistry degree too. In this conversation he and Brittany get into the real mechanics of building a solo esthetician business: why he spent a year at Ulta's brow bar before going out on his own and why he's grateful he did, how he offered everything and ended up hating 80 percent of his own menu, the overspending and undercharging trap that keeps new estheticians from ever breaking even, and the one paid ad he ran that produced nothing next to a free local Facebook post that produced 50 bookings. He also talks about doubling his following in a couple of months by finally making content he would actually watch, the customized skincare routine analysis that turned into his most loyal retail clients, how he works with his ADHD instead of against it, and what competing at the Skin Games taught him about confidence being self-trust rather than applause. If you've been quietly convinced that everyone with a following is doing this effortlessly, this one will set you straight in the best way. Find Tyler at Skinfinity and catch his crash courses on Instagram. Links below, along with his skin games recommendations.
