History’s Forgotten Medium: The Woman Who Took on Harry Houdini with Author Maryka Biaggio

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Markya Biaggio, author of the book Margery and Me. Maryka is a former professor of psychology and practicing clinical psychologist. She began writing novels in her middle years, and she’s been writing up a storm since then. Now she’s an award-winning novelist specializing in historical fiction based on real people. She loves unearthing the stories of people overlooked by history and bringing them back to life—portraying their challenges and foibles and rekindling their emotional world. She prides herself on carefully researching the period and people and providing readers with an immersive experience.   Her fiction has won several accolades, including Willamette Writers Award, Oregon Writers Colony Award, Historical Novel Society Review Editors’ Choice, La Belle Lettre Award, an Upper Peninsula of Michigan Notable Books Award, a Regional Arts & Council grant, and a Publishers Weekly pick.   She’s an avid opera fan and enjoys gardening, art films, and, of course, great fiction. She lives in Portland, Oregon.   In my book review, I stated Margery and Me is a historical fiction by Maryka Biaggio. Mina Crandon to her friends - and Margery to the world - discovers she has an amazing ability. She can talk to the dead - specifically, her brother, Walter, who died in a train accident. Before long, she has captured the attention of some very famous people and organizations - some of whom believed in her spiritual abilities and some who did not. Her biggest opposition was Harry Houdini.   This story is told from the voice of Walter, and he doesn't hold back. It seems Margery isn't a prim and proper lady. Although married to a doctor, she loves to flirt and finds comfort in many of her male supporters. And Walter does his best to dissuade her from making a mess of things - or more of a mess than she's already made.   Can she really summon the dead? Do psychics really exist? What would you have decided back in the 1920s?   Maryka based this book on the true story of Margery Crandon, and I love how she finds people that history forgot! I loved The Gun Girl and the Tall Guy, and I loved Margery and Me, too! Pick up a copy and you won't be sorry!   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Markya Biaggio Website: https://marykabiaggio.com/ FB: @ParlorGames IG: @authormaryka LinkedIn: @Maryka Biaggio   Purchase Margery and Me on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4djIKAD Ebook: https://amzn.to/48PTu8n   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? A Past That Won’t Stay Buried: One Man’s Return to a Deadly Truth with Author S.A. McLain

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is SA McLain, author of the book Blood on the Veld. S.A. McLain has worked as a pizza maker, bartender, interior designer, and marketing manager. After moving to the UK from California, she got her financial planning qualifications and spent several years in financial services while writing in her spare time.   Her debut novel, When Red Is Blue, was a National Indie Excellence and Readers’ Favorite award winner. She has also written articles for websites and magazines. McLain lives in a village north of London with her husband and two house lions and loves an ice bath.   In my book review, I stated Blood on the Veld by S.A. McLain is a wildlife crime thriller set in South Africa. And, without a doubt, it is a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.   We meet Christian Bekker, who, as an almost 18-year-old, kills a poacher in self-defense. However, he's convicted of murder. To avoid prison time, he and his family are exiled and lose their family land. It's now two decades later, and Christian finds himself back in South Africa and in the middle of a conspiracy theory.   Was his trial rigged? Did someone illegally take the family land? Did his father stumble upon illegal wildlife exports? Did someone kill him for that knowledge? Are they now after Christian and others who are close to him?   It's a book you won't be able to put down!   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author SA McLain Website: https://www.samclain.com/ B: @writersamclain Tiktok: @writersamclain IG: @writersamclain LinkedIn: @Sherri McLain   Purchase Blood on the Veld on Amazon: Ebook: https://amzn.to/4tjvC4y   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Beyond the Verdict: A Thriller Built on Character and Heart with Author Michael Stockham

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michael Stockham, author of the book Jake Fox: Ties That Bind. Michael is the the author of the award-winning, best-selling novel Confessions of an Accidental Lawyer. He has worked as a big-firm trial lawyer for over two decades after receiving his law degree from Cornell. He is a sought-after litigator and speaker. Blessed by two grown daughters who are Clemson Tigers, he lives in Dallas with his wife of twenty-four years, Kiersten, along with three dogs and two potbelly pigs.   In my book review, I stated Jake Fox: Ties That Blind is a legal thriller by Michael Stockham. This book is fast-paced and will keep you guessing. Jake Fox was once a big-city lawyer, but due to personal issues, has chosen to work in the small town where he grew up. His hope? That he can just exist and heal. Instead, he finds himself at the center of a murder case in which the life of a young teen, Rose, hangs in the balance.   Like all towns everywhere, what you see at first isn't the whole story. And as Jake soon learns, there is far more going on in this sleepy little town that he would have ever thought - and the deception runs wide and deep. Everyone is suspect and no one is safe.   But Michael doesn't just concentrate on the action. He also delivers amazing characters who are far more than stereotypical - and their viewpoints help the reader see all sides of the issues at play. This is an interesting read.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Michael Stockham Website: https://jakefoxthrillers.lpages.co/ Social media: FB: @Michael Stockham IG: @michael.stockham X: @michaelstockham LinkedIn: @Michael Stockham     Purchase Jake Fox: Ties That Bind on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4tZzzwd Ebook: https://amzn.to/3PiNFK3   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? One Man’s Courage: The Story That Saved Thousands with Author Linda Margolin Royal

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Linda Margolin Royal, author of the book The Star on the Grave. Linda Margolin Royal was born in Sydney, forever thankful her father and grandparents received life-saving transit visas from Chiune Sugihara in 1940, which enabled them to enter Japan and escape the Holocaust. This ultimately meant they could find a permanent, safe home in Australia in 1941. The remainder of her family, numbering in the hundreds, was murdered in concentration camps. She trained as a graphic designer and then copywriter, and spent thirty years in the advertising industry both in Australia and the US, writing advertisement scripts for TV and radio, and general press advertising for multinational newspapers and billboards. Linda’s creative bent extends to abstract painting and drawing from live models. The Star on the Grave is her first novel.   In my book review, I stated The Star on the Grave by Linda Margolin Royal is a Holocaust historical fiction. I love historical fiction, especially those based on true family history and those that give me an insight into an aspect of history I didn't know.   The novel is a dual timeline showing Rachel's life in 1968 and her grandmother and father's life in 1940 - relatives of the author. We learn of a Polish Jewish family escaping the Nazis through Lithuania and a brave Japanese diplomat, unknown to me, named Chiune Sugihara who issued thousands of visas to save them. This novel hit both of my loves!   I also love great characters, and this novel doesn't disappoint. I immediately came to love Rachel and felt her despair, anger, grief, and eventual understanding as her world shattered around her. Her grandmother is a character who is deserving of her own book! Linda did such a great job describing her that I could both see and hear her in my head as I read. And even Rachel's father, though not a warm and fuzzy character, held me captive.   This is a great read. A definite must-read. Steamy Romance Meets Political Upheaval: Why This Genre Mashup Works with Author Deborah J Brasket

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Deborah J Brasket, author of the book This Sea Within. Deborah Brasket spent six years sailing around the world with her husband and children. When she returned home to the Central Coast, she taught English at Allan Hancock and Cuesta colleges before joining SBCAN.   After retirement, she settled among the golden hills and vineyards of Paso Robles to write the kinds of novels she loves to read. When Things Go Missing was published in September 2025. Her second novel This Sea Within will be published in June 2026.   In my book review, I stated This Sea Within is a political thriller by Deborah J Brasket. We quickly meet Lena, a young woman on the brink of discovering who she truly wants to be. However, her mother's absence, and Lena's anger on the subject, have gotten in the way. So, she decides to go to San Balanque, her mother's homeland, to figure out the parts of her she's missing. If only life were that simple.   Instead of a few simple lessons about her heritage, Lena soon learns of an underground revolution trying to overthrow the cruel dictator - and the activist in her wants to know more. When she meets Raoul, the leader of the rebel group known as the Aguileros, her world changes forever.   Will she be able to reconcile her pacifist leanings to the freedom fighter mentality needed to overthrow the government? Will her family's past taint her future as an Aguileros? Can she separate her feelings for Raoul from her feelings about the revolution?   This is an intense novel that doesn't hold back. You'll find yourself struggling along with Lena as you try to figure out where you stand - and where you should stand. This is a must-read!   Author Note: There is violence and sex scenes, but at no time did I feel they were gratuitous or out of line with the characters.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Deborah J Brasket Website: https://deborahjbrasket.com FB: @DeborahJBrasket IG: @dbrasket LinkedIn: @Deborah Brasket X: @DeborahBrasket   Purchase This Sea Within on Amazon: Ebook: https://amzn.to/4eF6aCS   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? West Texas Justice: A Dark, Fast-Paced Ride Through Moral Chaos with Author Jim Nesbitt

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jim Nesbitt, author of the book The Fatal Saving Grace. Award-winning author Jim Nesbitt has written five hard-boiled Texas crime thrillers that feature an indelible protagonist, Dallas private eye Ed Earl Burch, a cashiered homicide detective with bad knees, a wounded liver and an empty bank account. He’s smart, tough, profane and reckless: nobody’s hero—and nobody’s fool.   Drawing on four decades as a journalist chasing hurricanes, presidential candidates, neo-Nazis, cops, crooks and cowboys, Nesbitt writes hard-hitting novels bristling with relentless action, pulse-racing plots, solid storylines and a colorful cast of characters. Gritty and remorseless, these stories take readers on a thrill ride that runs from the gleaming towers of Dallas and Houston to the stark desert mountains of the Texas Big Bend country and northern Mexico.   This is hard-boiled detective fiction at its finest -- taut, tense and uncompromising sagas of revenge and redemption. With his pitch-perfect voice and keen eye for detail, Jim Nesbitt has created extraordinary tales centered on a main character like no other: the deeply flawed but wildly compelling Ed Earl Burch. They are damned good stories exceptionally well-told.   A lapsed horseman, pilot and saloon sport with a keen appreciation of old guns, vintage cars and tractors, red meat, good cigars, aged whisky without an “e”; and a well-told story, Nesbitt is also a diehard Tennessee Vols fan, who now lives in enemy territory -- Athens, Alabama -- with his wife, Pam. He is working on his sixth Ed Earl Burch novel, THE PERFECT TRAIN WRECK.   In my book review, I stated The Fatal Saving Grace is Book 5 of the Ed Earl Burch Hard-Boiled Texas Crime Thrillers series by Jim Nesbitt. I enjoyed this crime thriller and the crusty old character of Ed Earl Burch. This felt like a cross between an old western and a noir fiction with characters that weren't all good or all bad. In fact, Jim had me hoping that one of the bad guys might not have to face prison time.   Burch, as he is known to his peers, was once a lawman but had his badge taken away. Then he spent the next couple of decades as a PI before getting a badge again. However, the transition from "do anything as long as you don't get caught" to "follow the law" isn't easy on Burch or those he works with. This is especially true when it becomes apparent that a killer they thought was dead is very much alive and back at the killing game. Throw in the Aryan Brotherhood, the Dixie-Mafia, drug turf wars, and over-inflated lawman egos, and you've got a story worth reading.   NOTE: This is not a clean book. There is some rather graphic killing scenes and a bit of loud sex, but none of it felt out of character for the protagonist or his world.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Jim Nesbitt Website: https://jimnesbittbooks.com/ FB: @edearlburchbooks Substack: @edearl56   Purchase The Fatal Saving Grace on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4mmDX5z Ebook: https://amzn.to/3O0RTFE   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors?
