Episode 100: Things I learned doing 100 new music podcasts

Episode 100! I will not spoil the incredible insights gathered during the effort expended to make 100 new music podcasts focusing on all genres of music. Needless to say the umbrella. under which all these conclusions fall involves the idea that this is absolutely a golden age of recorded music, there is so much great new music to listen to and powerful cultural and economic factors limit the number of people who reach the same conclusion.Of course, if you are reading this podcast blurb and you are listening or even considering what I'm saying here, I appreciate you and urge you to listen as widely as you can. Thanks for listening, you should listen for yourself to make yourself a slightly better person as I believe that listening to great music can help to open a person's mind.Excerpts from this episode:Kaito Winse: An KoriKilbourne: Bald BoysLos Piranas: Con mi burrito sabanero voy directo al mataderoclipping.: Run ItThe Tubs: NarcissistDub Syndicate: IntercommunicationsFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. I think it just moved.I'm always open to listener suggested playlists if you feel you can hang with the host. You can find these artists on bandcamp and streaming outlets. You can support them by listening and telling your friends. Episode 99: I Love the Mash, What can I Say?

New music thus far in 2025 has been crazy great. A great record is one that bears repeated listens, is interesting and creative in a unique way, and makes you feel something emotionally. Making people feel something through music is not as easy as it may sound. In a normal year I listen to well over 1,000 excerpts from new recordings and find maybe 20-25 recordings that fit my definition of a best of year recording. You can laugh at me for my nerdy approach to online new music scavenging but I keep a spreadsheet of great records that I find and thus far I've found 17 records that could quite easily end up on my best of 2025. That's a shit ton of new music in a very short period of time.In this episode the Agender record is easily a candidate to be on my best of 2025 list. Fronted by an Australian woman the record sounds like Devo went to the gym and got ripped and read a lot of feminist literature. The track from Kenya Eugene is a follow up to a single called Bun it, which I most definitely would love folks to check it out.Otherwise I just keep hitting all the genres, I love the mash what can I say?Excerpts from this episode:Baalti: Rajaclipping.: MalleusKiala & Afroblaster: One RacePissgrave: Dissident AmputatorKenya Eugene: In and Outtah Loveskaiwater: popAgender: Damaged GirlsFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Episode 95: Janky

The internet's most fiery 13 minute new music podcast returns with our first sure to make the best of year list, Vaodou Game's new record FINTOU. Their previous efforts are over the top funky and partyistic, pumped beyond belief but this one has slowed down the tempo, added some accordion and guest singers and I think it's a certified bag of bangers as there's more depth to what they're doing here. Plenty of funk is still on offer after these changes, check it out.Not to say that the other tracks on this aren't bangers -- more African music, some crushing metal from Ice T's Body Count and a lyrical and strange performance from Cameron Winter. As usual The Magic Organ is about the quality not the genre, creativity over lifestyle every time.Excerpts from this episode:Vaodou Game: RalerBody Count: Do or DieShovel Dance Collective: The Merry Golden TreeBoldy James & RichGains: JankyCameron Winter: The Rolling StonesSonghoy Blues: DagabiPavel Milyakov: air XFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Episode 94: January Foraging

I spend most of January sifting through best of the year before music lists -- Pitchfork, bandcamp, other lifestyle outlets. The NY Times, no I don't take their music criticism seriously at all, blech. I am looking for records that I may have missed and there aren't many, just going up and down the Pitchfork top 50 I had listened to 30+ of the records they recommend.I think the most interesting track on this episode is the track from Still House Plants. It works as rock due to its reluctance to rock, they barely remain in the genre they are slotted into. Their formula works because they have a great drummer and they seem to be listening to each other as they play something more akin to jazz than rock.Anyway, it's 2025, enjoy this January foraging session, if you have any great records don't hoard them, let me know.Excerpts from this episode:Caxtrinho: Queda LivreA Taut Line: JorumLowen: Najang Bah Divhayeh MazandaranKaren Nyame KG & Gina Jeanz: Sovereign GrooveStill House Plants: StickyJlin: AkomaFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ. Episode 92: The Magic Organ Best of 2023 Part 3

Here we are just before the holidays and the digital town square is flooded with best of lists for music, films and books. Some of my choices occasionally pop up on a list but there are many that are unique to The Magic Organ. The Magic Organ is a music loving podcast, it is not a music pimping/PR podcast. Going against the grain, focusing on the actual music and not giving a flying fuq about brat summer and whatever other stupid identity nonsense is sprinkled all over listeners to make corporate music appear meaningful.Randy Mason's hip hop record is a perfect example of an overlooked gem and I continue to maintain that anyone claiming to be a music lover without listening to all the incredible music coming out of Africa isn't really a music lover. Finally, if you dig the rock check out the Meridian Brothers wacko Latin-Captain Beefheart business.Enjoy and thanks for listening and happy holidays.Excerpts from this episode:Meridian Brothers: Se Que Estoy CambiandoFloating Points: VocoderThe Zawose Queens: MapendoRandy Mason: Wallet Phone KeysAccra Quartet: HuntersFeel free to follow me on the Insta where I conversate as themagic_organ.
