A New Events Season, Bad Fixes, and Fresh Favorites

This week, Alex, Randy, and Beck talk about the correct way to staff a pickup and/or a 911SC; our recent experience at Motoring Club Cars & Coffee in San Francisco; handling good friends in bad cars; Trooper apologies; "black plates" on black cars; the true meaning of car culture (hint: it involves stealing from children); the overall event situation in and around SF; Alex's looming family trip to Disneyland, God help him; the wrong way to think about a nature preserve; and Pro 7 memories. Next up is our favorite recent Question of the Week, wherein the crew covers a failed bumper backdate, vice-and-hammer metalwork, and extremely questionable battery mounting techniques. They briefly explore the differences between Mr. Sandman and Enter Sandman, then lust after green-dial 911s, a vintage Texaco gas station, a John Oates/Emory 356, an SVO Mustang, and other watchlist favorites. Thwarting AI Photos, A Scottsdale Recap, and Watchlist Favorites

This week, Alex and Randy begin with a frank look at the Deville Debacle of the weekend before last and have a discussion about how we handle major issues and mistakes as a company. On a lighter note, they move on to a recap of the fun had in Arizona for Auction Week and a followup in Vegas, debate the value proposition of a $40 corndog at the veritable circus of a live tentpole auction, and give shout-outs to several of the BaT valued Local Partners who were in Scottsdale with us. Next up, our excitement for the upcoming BaT Meet-Up in Palm Springs; James Garner's black/gold Hertz GT350; auction fees on high-dollar cars; the  Eisenhower step; blowing minds in an R34 Skyline while driving through the desert with bros; an ode to early Hondas; the perfect '32 Ford spec; the Super Bowl vs GNRS, an easy choice if ever there was one; and finally, nerding out on Pajeros, Ladas, and 1970s ski racks. 3. The One-Year Garage: 2026

    JAN 15

    The One-Year Garage: 2026

This week we're putting a modern twist on everybody's favorite game: The One Year Garage is visiting the fresh, dewy, barely sentient year of 2026 to see what of its offerings might strike the fancy of the diehard old-car obsessives on our panel. Spoiler alert: there are strongly held opinions, some of which are not the same as yours. Along the way, they also cover Tekashi 6ix9ine; hypercar ignorance; the cost of modern car ownership; when 2014 still means "new"; auto show nostalgia; Fiero dreams; DRS on a "street car"; (good) weird small cars; non-metallic snarkiness; exotic e-bikes; Dakar semis; a far-off Scout fantasy; gigantic vehicles with gobs of power; going solo in a Sterrato; Morgan snarkiness; and a general unease with the new car industry.  For those unfamiliar, the rules of One Year Garage are simple: each of our contestants, round-robin-style, pick a vehicle for every one of five categories: Sports Car, Daily Driver, Family Hauler, Truck/4x4, and Wild Card. All picks must be (or will theoretically be) available during the 2026 model year. Once a particular car has been picked, it can't be picked again. Self-doubt is encouraged, and judgment must be passed on others' choices. Arguments about what belongs in a certain category are expected. And the group must accidentally leave out at least one important option, the absence of which must raise the ire of a minimum of two people on Instagram. Enjoy!   Mentioned in this episode: 3:21 The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X Does 0-60 MPH in 1.68 Seconds Road & Track 16:09  Gordon Murray Automotive T.33 18:24  Alpine A110 20:28 Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package 21:13  Porsche 911 GT3 RS 24:22 AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon  26:43  Volkswagen ID.Buzz listings 28:54  Acura MDX Type S 30:31  Honda Jet Echelon 32:17  Modified 2023 Honda Civic Type R 33:02  Porsche 911 Carrera GTS 35:10  Renault 5 - Fully electric city car 37:05  2026 Toyota GR86 40:10  Ducati Futa E-Bike 44:00  Land Rover Defender D7XR 47:11  6k-Mile 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V ESV 48:38  Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato 50:07  2026 GMC Canyon AT4 & AT4X 52:36  Taurus T3 Max (FIA) 55:41  Lotus Emira 57:16  Ferrari Daytona SP3 58:37  Ferrari 849 Testarossa 59:50  2026 Nissan Z 1:01:23  Ferrari 296 GTB Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? BaT Stats, 2025 Awards, Watchlist Favorites, and Too Much Time in a Tiny Plane

Alex is joined by Randy and Zac to discuss monster trucks of yore; 1990s Sacramento basketball; "frame off" restorations of unibody cars; newly published BaT stats and Randy's thoughts on 2025 from the president's perspective; the least popular theme park for kids; an ex-Nonnenberg car live on the site; the first Radwood; and whether Zac can ever be a truck guy. Moving on we talk about the annual BaT Awards, which we all look forward to every year; tease an upcoming Meet-Up in Palm Springs, BaT's first track event, and Route 66 activities to come; highlight current watchlist picks; give some Healey love;  park a (probably broken) 912 inside a coffee shop; arrive at a stereotypical convergence on Porsche colors; and marvel at a very special Thunderbird whose history we are all fascinated with.  Mentioned in this episode: 3:24 An Amazing 2025 Finish, and Excitement for 2026! 12:45  5,900-Kilometer, Fuel-Injected 1988 Lamborghini Jalpa 13:51 IROC RSR-Style 1973 Porsche 911T Coupe 3.2L 5-Speed 14:26  Ex-Nonnenberg 1987 BMW 535is 5-Speed 14:41 Northwest BMW Purchase Adventure: Part 1 and Part 2 19:23  It's Time for the 2025 BaT Awards—Make Your Nominations Now! 20:31  Past Photo Galleries of the Year 30:39  Past Videos of the Year 21:02  BaT People's Choice: Best Feature of 2009 21:12  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2010 21:20  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2011 21:29  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2012 21:32  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2013 21:39  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2014 21:48  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2017 21:54  BaT Auction Success Story: Coming Full-Circle With a Celica GT 22:04  BaT People’s Choice: Best Feature of 2016 22:31 The Winner: BaT People’s Choice Best Feature of 2018 26:00  Forklift Driver vs R34 GTR YouTube 30:13 Race Cars Category Page 30:52  1972 Datsun 510 2-Door Sedan 4-Speed Race Car 34:35  Ex–Jacques Villeneuve 1995 Reynard-Ford Cosworth 95I 34:44  1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 35:15  LS3-Powered 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80 35:19  1967 Tatra 2-603 35:30  1985 Lada Niva 3-Door Hatchback 4×4 35:38 Lada Make Page 35:47  Euro 1994 Ferrari 512 TR 36:19  BMW E30 3-Series Touring Model Page 36:27  1998 BMW 323ti 5-Speed Individual 36:50  40k-Mile 2003 Honda S2000 37:12  1969 DeTomaso Mangusta 37:45  1983 Sbarro Super Five 38:50  1989 Hägglunds M973A1 SUSV 39:35 1979 Ferrari 308 GTB 40:07  Austin-Healey 100 Model Page 43:13  1960 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite 5-Speed 46:50  2014 Porsche Cayenne GTS 47:34  The Motoring Club San Francisco 51:07  One Make, One Decade with Maurice Merrick of Horsepower Heritage 52:25  Ex–Alamo Airways & Hughes Tool Company 1956 Ford Thunderbird “Crash Wagon” Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? JAN 1

    2025 Year in Review

Alex is joined by fellow BaT senior luminaries, Howard and Zac, to take a look back at 2025 and ring in the new year. They regale us with some of their favorite or otherwise notable listings from throughout the year, and along the way talk about Howard as a secret Corvette guy; the glory of the Mazdaspeed Protege and its predecessors; the Valentine One (and related bad advice from Howard); and key value differences between the beginning and end of 2025. Also discussed: a rare glimpse into curation regrets; alphanumeric Lambo soup;  going from one first world problem to the next (some of which involve virus-related emergency roadside stops); teasers for upcoming BaT events; a mutual yearning to get back out on track; and resurrecting Crashgate 2008. Alex, Randy, Beck, and Tyler discuss Hanukkah gift-giving strategies; holiday road trips to the snow, in order of escalating insanity; and a highly charged movie debate. This last subject becomes a jumping-off point for an extended talk about movie-adjacent cars; lamenting and besmirching; Plymouth wood paneling connoisseurship; ghosts of American car brands past; drift missiles; stalker Eagles; and generational Jeep headlight trauma. becomes a jumping-off point for an extended talk about movie-adjacent cars; lamenting and besmirching; Plymouth wood paneling connoisseurship; ghosts of American car brands past; drift missiles; stalker Eagles; and generational Jeep headlight trauma. (B)aT the Movies: The Fast and the Furious (2001)

We've been teasing it for weeks now. You loved our Bullitt podcast, so we now present you with another movie breakdown. This time it's from the opposite end of the car movie spectrum: the original The Fast and the Furious from 2001. Alex is joined by Zac, Beck, and Cam to air out their multigenerational viewpoints on this cinematic masterpiece, which was so formative to the automotive pursuits of many of our community members—especially those under, shall we say, "a certain age." The crew discuss how to rank the 11 movies in the oeuvre; the mentality of working with what you have (otherwise known as "run what you brung"); explanations behind some of the cars missing from the F&F roster, and one now missing from history; and the age-old tradition of terrible shifting in car movies. Also covered: the movie's notoriously uneven jargon; a catalog of stacked fender stickers; the modern, OEM-approved version of underglows; what it means to put down 10s in 2025 vs in 2001; an architectural travesty; mermaids; favorite cars from the movie; AI-written characters, 25 years before their time; and yes, even throughlines to other "car movies" like Bullitt and American Graffiti.
