Understanding the Psalms: Why These Ancient Songs Still Matter | Truth for the Way Ep. 1

Is it possible to love a verse from the Bible—and still misunderstand what God is saying? The Book of Psalms contains some of the most beloved passages in all of Scripture. But to understand and apply them faithfully, we must first consider what God was communicating through their inspired authors. In this introductory episode of Truth for the Way, we begin a new journey through the Book of Psalms, laying the foundation for a consecutive, verse-by-verse study of all 150 psalms. Through the Psalms will feature focused, approximately 10–15-minute episodes, generally examining one psalm at a time. Longer psalms may require multiple episodes to give the text the attention it deserves. We’ll explore each passage in its historical, literary, and theological context, explain its meaning verse by verse, and consider how its truths apply to our lives today. Before beginning with Psalm 1, we’ll explore the background of this remarkable collection of inspired Hebrew poetry. In this introductory episode, we’ll explore: * What the Psalms are and why they were written * Who wrote the Psalms and their historical setting * How the Psalms are organized into five books * How Hebrew poetry and parallelism work * Why biblical context matters for interpretation and application * How the Psalms point us to Jesus Christ * Why these ancient songs remain relevant to Christians today Our goal isn’t simply to find inspirational thoughts, but to grow in our understanding of God’s Word, deepen our reverence for Him, and learn to live faithfully according to His truth. Coming Next: Psalm 1 — Two Ways to Live May God’s Word continue to shape what you believe and how you live. Keep looking up—and give ’em heaven! A Battle We Were Never Meant to Win — 1 Samuel 17:8–11; Romans 7:14–25

When we think about David and Goliath, we often hear messages about courage, facing our giants, and stepping out in faith. But what if that’s not the main point? In this sermon, we slow down and take a closer look at 1 Samuel 17 and Romans 7 to uncover a deeper truth: this is not ultimately a story about what we can do—but about what we cannot do.Israel stood powerless before an enemy they could not defeat. And in the same way, we face a battle against sin that we cannot win in our own strength. But God did not leave us there.Through a representative, victory was won. This message traces the pattern from David to Christ and shows how the struggle described in Romans 7 is not a sign of defeat—but evidence of a battle taking place in a heart that has been made alive. In this sermon, you’ll see:* Why David and Goliath is not primarily about “being brave”* How Scripture presents salvation through a representative* Why believers still struggle with sin* The difference between regret and true repentance* What it means to fight sin—not for victory, but from victoryWe are active in the fight—but never independent. Our dependence is the means by which God works His victory in us.⸻Scripture References:* 1 Samuel 17:8–11* Romans 7:14–25* Romans 8:1–2, 13* Titus 2:11–14* Colossians 2:13–15* Hebrews 12:1–2A Battle We Were Never Meant to Win1 Samuel 17:8–11; Romans 7:14–25Preached May 3, 2026George Dunn
