In today's episode of Yours Lawfully, we are delving deep into the reforms the UK government is planning to introduce to the UK's comprehensive data protection law, modelled after the European GDPR. To discuss this topic, we are joined by two renowned experts and titans of the UK’s data protection industry: Dr. Ian Walden and Mr. Jon Baines.

Dr. Ian Walden is a Professor of Information and Communications Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University London. With expertise spanning academia and practice, he has been deeply involved in the field of data protection since 1987. Dr. Walden served as a Member of the European Commission’s Multi-Stakeholder Expert Group tasked with supporting the application of Regulation (EU) 2016/679. Additionally, he works as Of Counsel at Baker McKenzie.

Mr. Jon Baines is a senior Data Protection Specialist at Mishcon de Reya and serves as the Chairperson at NADPO (The UK national association for Data Protection and FOI Officers). With over 15 years of experience, Mr. Baines has been advising major organisations on UK and other international data protection laws.

With their expert opinions and analyses, we will explore the most impactful changes being considered by the UK government to the UK's data protection regime. We'll delve into the reasons for these changes emerging now and examine the effects they will have on British society, businesses, and individuals.

On today's episode of Yours Lawfully, we are joined by Dr. Michaela MacDonald, lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London and co-host of More Than Just a Game,  who discusses the pertinent legal questions regarding trade marks in the metaverse, such as revocation of trade marks,  genuine use in the metaverse and the importance of protecting your trade mark in the metaverse. Lastly, we consider whether legislative reform is required to keep pace with the metaverse and the changes it is causing in trade mark law.

Dr MacDonald teaches Interactive Entertainment Law, AI, Robotics and the Law, Cybersecurity Law and Product Development across various programmes at Queen Mary, University of London and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Dr MacDonald is also an Editor in Chief for the Interactive Entertainment Law Review, a peer reviewed journal that consists of legal analysis of interactive entertainment, video games, virtual/augmented/mixed realities and all other related and emerging forms of digital interactive entertainment. 

Dr MacDonald also has extensive experience in practice as she is a consultant for Moorcrofts LLP , collaborating on projects that have focused on the legality of data and text mining activities, Open Source licenses classification and contract automation.

Today's episode of Yours Lawfully focuses on understanding the interconnections between climate change protests, and what, if anything, the law and media have to do with it all. This topic will be explored particularly from the perspective of climate change protesters, specifically within the Just Stop Oil movement, and the future restrictions their human rights will face from the facilitation of UK's new Public Order Act 2023.

To consider this intersection, particularly from a climate change activism perspective, we decided to talk to Mathilda Lorkin, an alum from Queen Mary who has studied environmental and international law extensively in both the UK and France. Mathilda's research and expertise lies in understanding the rights of indigenous peoples and the ways in which they're impacted by climate change. On today's episode of Yours Lawfully, we have with us Professor Paul Wragg, a media law professor from the University of Leeds, who takes us through the nature of online fandoms and the numerous privacy and free speech concerns emerging from the same. We also attempt to answer the question as to whether such fandoms need to be governed by legislation or self-regulation. 
He has worked extensively in media regulation, privacy law, and press freedom. He is a board member of the campaign group - Hacked Off, which supports victims of press abuse. He is also the host of a podcast titled the Media Law Podcast and has published several articles in various legal journals. He has also authored a book on independent press regulation titled: "A Free and Regulated Press: Defending Coercive Independent Press Regulation".
