    Snowball

    One day, back when we were young(er) and carefree, we threw a snowball from the top of the mountain without realizing that the snowball would grow larger and larger... This week's writers podcast is about those small decisions we made at the beginning of our writing careers that transformed our lives. Decisions like retiring and spending those empty days writing a book, or drafting a author's website, or or joining a writing community, all of which leading to a universe of intended and unintended consequences. We talk about our experiences and, hopefully, offer good advice to those who have not yet dipped a toe into the world of full-time writing. CC is gearing up for the October debut of Battle Born Bride, including the possibility of cosplaying one of the characters in her book. She hopes to make at least two appearances in October when it is released on Nevada Day. I am serializing Finding Salvation Part One on Patreon and Substack.     Rich Moreno Returns

    Nevada journalist, author, and creator of the Backyard Traveler series, Rich Moreno returns to "The CC & JT Amateur Hour" where we discuss the creative and publishing journey behind his first book of short stories. Known for his non-fiction works centered around the Silver State, Rich's transition into fiction showcases the creative process that many writers navigate, blending personal experiences with the landscapes of the American West. Tales from the Nevada Ether began when he submitted a story to an anthology curated by Carson City publisher Stephen Provost and Dragon Crown Books. This submission led to a series of published stories in subsequent anthologies, ultimately culminating in the collection of his own short stories. Rich reflects these and on his early writings, revealing that his first short story was crafted during a class led by the esteemed Nevada writer Bob Laxalt. The podcast concludes with sage advice from Rich to all authors on the traditional publishing process: "Read the contract."     We try to send out a newsletter every month, and as it often happens, we were late again with sending it out this month, so the podcast is the newsletter and vice versa. Enjoy! September 2026 Author Talk at the Churchill County Library CC appeared at the Churchill County Library in Fallon, Nevada, on August 25th to discuss the romance of Nevada. The talk revolved mostly around the “Restless Spirits” series including #Passionrestored and #Hauntseason, but included a preview of the next Two Moore Books release, Battle Born Bride.     Teaching Tool

    Hello from the podcast where "production values go to die." We have lots going on here at the Worldwide Headquarters, including the upcoming debut of CC's latest book "Battle Born Bride" in October. In fairness, BBB is more than a book. Cassidy is mapping out a bibliography of the primary sources she used to develop the background, and there are book club questions in the back of her book. There may even be a costume.     Hawk Fire

    For today's podcast, we had an organized agenda (really!), then the last twenty-four hours happened. The Hawk Fire started on the slopes of Peavine Mountain in the immediate northwest region of Reno, and the winds drove it in all directions, including towards our daughter's home and place of business. We were on the edge of our seats all of yesterday until she made the wise decision to evacuate herself and her three cats. When we woke up this morning, we saw the fire had reached US Highway 395. Oof. Our prayers and strength to all affected. While this was unfolding, I remembered the Nevada Appeal's "Best of Carson 2026" contest had ended last week. We did not receive an invitation to the awards ceremony, so we assumed we had lost. I wondered where we placed...and found that we had won our category. Uh, wow. We were voted as the "Most Unique Business" in the Nevada Appeal's Best of Carson City 2026 Contest. Huh. Go figure. One of the nice things about this contest is the local visibility. We may buy a banner (😜). My thanks to our voters, the Appeal, and our glorious leader Cassidy Carson who leads our endeavors with an iron fist covered with a velvet glove. Other items of note: - CC will be giving an author talk this Tuesday, August 25, at 6:00pm at the Churchill County Library in Fallon, Nevada. Her topic will be "Romance in Nevada Novels" or something close to that.- Her latest book, Battle Born Bride, is available for pre-order.     Ken Sutherland Part Deux

    In this episode of the Nevada Author Network, we delve into the creative journey of Ken Sutherland, a celebrated author and member of the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame. After a 53-year career in broadcasting, Ken transitioned into the world of writing, where he found his true passion. Ken's writing career began unexpectedly during his time as a disc jockey. Surrounded by seasoned professionals with deep voices, he felt the need to stand out. "I figured if I was gonna keep a job, I would have to say something clever," he shares. This cleverness translated into writing, leading him to craft over 40,000 commercials and eventually, a series of novels. Ken's first novel, *Heartbreaker*, took nearly two decades to come to life. Originally set in the 90s, he realized it had to be reimagined in the 70s to resonate with the story’s essence. The protagonist, a retired LAPD detective, navigates the turbulent music scene of that era after the tragic death of his pop star daughter.     Body Heat

    Let's talk about Lawrence Kasdan's 1981 salute to the film noir genre: Body Heat. William Hurt plays a lustful, and frankly not very bright, lawyer who gets seduced into murdering a rich woman's husband, only to discover he may have been the one being played all along. Kathleen Turner is the femme fatale who uses her body to turn off Hurt's upper brain to have him do her bidding. We saw this film in 1981 and in 2026, and it hit us differently in our sixties than it did when we first saw it during another Carson City heat wave. In fact, we didn't finish it last night. We explain why. As an aside, we thoroughly spoil this forty-five year old classic. We toured three local independant books stores: Thistle and Nightshade, Between the Covers, and Bub's Bookstore. We had fun and we spent money. We discuss each in the podcast. We salute those on the front lines of the Bug Fire and those frontline workers at your favorite dining establishment (good morning, Jack!).     Welcome to the podcast "where productions values go to die," and this episiode covers a range of topics, starting with out gratitude to Bub's Bookstore in Carson City, Nevada for being a bright light in our community. Please check them out if you are local to northern Nevada. I put this in every post: our podcast is not endorsed nor are we paid to promote, but you would probably question that when you see the amount of Coca-Cola products we've got stacked on our table. We went on a "junkin'" (great word!) safari and brought home cool products from our local antique stores. Being a writers podcast, we used the safari to discuss how authors can present obsession and stalking in your work of fiction.
