Mental Health > Everything Else

Nabeel Shamji

Hi, I'm Nabeel Shamji and this is my weekly podcast where I share stories and discuss topics related to the struggles associated with mental health. Our mental health should be the number one priority in our lives, but often times we let other things take precedence and end up suffering in solitude and silence. My goal here is to raise awareness, remove the negative stigma associated with mental health issues, especially with men, and to show you that you are not alone, support is always there when you need it.

    Dealing With Anxiety

    First off, thank-you for listening and the continued support, it means a great deal to me that you all are helping to increase awareness and remove the stigma that is attached to mental health. Now more than ever we need to all come together as a community and support each other, by doing so we can normalize mental health struggles and enable those suffering to seek the help that they need without fear of judgement. Today's solo episode dives into the topic of anxiety, my experience with it, and some tips on how i manage it. Similar to depression, anxiety is a very relatable subject when it comes to mental health and i wanted to share my story and things that i have learnt which help me combat it to hopefully help those of you who are also dealing with it. It began to be something i dealt with during my university career, but because i knew nothing about it or want to come to terms with the fact that i could have it, i never dealt with it and allowed it to progress with the decisions i made. Eventually after it began to dictate my behaviours, actions, thoughts, relationships, and basically every aspect of my life, i decided i needed to get help to deal with it. I share the things i did to begin this process, and how they helped me to get my anxiety in control to a point where it became manageable. I truly hope that this episode helps those of you that are in a similar situation and can relate deal with your anxiety and get yourself to a point where it is not dictating your life. Thank-you once again for listening, please share the episode and podcast with anyone you can and as always, take care of yourselves !

    Special Guest Episode with Jordan Knapp

    Episode 6 ! Thank-you all for the love and support that you have been giving me with the podcast and my mission to increase awareness & remove the negative stigma associated with mental health. This mission is particularly important in the month of May because it is mental health awareness month which is a great opportunity to spread the word and put the focus on helping & supporting our community. Today's episode is a special guest episode where i chat with a very good friend of mine about her mental health journey. Jordan is a social worker who not only works in mental health but who also dealt with mental health struggles for quite awhile. She opens up about her issues with substance abuse, how it impacted her, as well as how her support network helped her get through that extremely tough time. We also discuss the pandemic and how it relates to the work she does, the situations that she has to deal with regularly, and the importance of community during this time of isolation. Jordan shares some tips on how to start getting your mental health better when you are struggling, the idea of productivity, and how doing your best is always enough. She mentions the importance of having mental health conversations and how they can be so helpful not only when you are feeling down but also just in general. I hope that you enjoy the episode as much as i enjoyed having the discussion with Jordan, please continue to support the podcast by listening and sharing. For those of you who are interested in supporting me in my fundraiser for CMHA, a link to the page where you can donate will be on my linktree account which you can find on my instagram. Thank-you once again, and as always take care of yourselves !

    Health = Wealth

    Episode 5 ! Thank-you for listening and supporting the podcast, by doing so you too are helping raise awareness and reducing the negative stigma that is associated with mental health struggles. It's important that we all do our part in helping to normalize mental health issues, and get the people who need help the help that they need and deserve. Todays episode is a short solo episode where i discuss the topic of health = wealth, i'm sure that you have all heard it before and that's because it's true. When dealing with mental health issues, often we let our health slip through the cracks which is not a good habit at all. Because our mental health is suffering, we let our physical and emotional health take a toll as well, which in turn causes a more negative impact. It's a trickle down effect and it's our responsibility to ensure that we don't allow this to happen, or that we mitigate it as best as we can and make the right choices & decisions for our well being. Taking care of our diet/nutrition, as well as making exercise a part of our daily lives will help to better not only our mental health, but our overall health. I also discuss substance abuse briefly and share a bit of my experience with it during my mental health journey. Substance abuse, like poor diet and lack of physical activity in our lives, is not the answer or solution to our problems. We must have the courage to face those issues we are dealing with, and address them in the right manner that will not further negatively impact our mental health. I hope that you enjoy the episode, please continue to support and share the podcast, the more people it reaches, the better ! Thank-you and as always, take care of yourselves.

    Special Guest Episode with Carol Mei

    As always, i want to thank-you again for tuning in and listening to the podcast, your support means ALOT. We can all help to raise awareness and remove the negative stigma that is associated with mental health issues. This episode is another special one because it is a guest feature episode, a friend of mine is going to share her story with mental health, and the journey that she is on handling it during this unprecedented time. Carol tells us a bit about herself, when her struggles with depression began, and how the pandemic has greatly affected her because she is a nurse who has to deal with COVID in so many different ways. Because she also wants to help raise awareness and remove the stigma related to mental health, Carol is doing her graduate research on new grad nurses and the effect that the transition period in combination with the current state of the world has on their mental health. We share insights on how to cope with the pandemic and it's effect on our mental health, as well some advice for people who are interested in getting help dealing with their mental health struggles. Having Carol as a guest on this episode was awesome, hearing a nurse's perspective & story was great and i hope that you not only enjoy listening to our conversation, but that you find it helpful as well. Please continue to show support, share the podcast and episode with as many people as you can, thanks for listening, take care of your selves !
