MINDSPACE soundbite – What do retirees struggle with? And what support do they wish their employers had provided?

What impacts employees’ retirement decisions? Old Mutual Corporate’s 2026 Annuitisation Study suggests there’s more than just circumstances at play. People’s decision-making is influenced by education, advice, communication and engagement. What is evident is that retirement decisions are not made in isolation. As employers, it’s clear we need to start the retirement conversation well before the point at which an employee must make a decision. And we need to make the journey personal. The aim is to make sure they have the understanding, advice and support to understand what each decision means for their long-term financial security. Here, we share meaningful ways for employers to help their people to feel better prepared for retirement – and the big decisions that arrive at this intersection. This MINDSPACE soundbite is inspired by the latest edition of our MINDSPACE newsletter. Listen for more details on what inputs influence employees’ decisions. MINDSPACE soundbite – Why focusing on fairness is an economic imperative

On average, women in South Africa are expected to retire with only 71% as much wealth as men, and in their careers earn only R72 for every R100 earned by men for the same job. Imagine how the country could change if more women were fairly rewarded for their contributions. When women are paid fairly for equal work, retirement outcomes improve. The country’s families led by women will have greater capacity to build generational wealth. And the economy benefits from broader participation and spending power. The opportunity for meaningful change rests with employers. Lindiwe Sebesho, Managing Director of Remchannel and a leading voice on pay gap advocacy, suggests the five steps that employers can take now to close the gender pay gap faster. This MINDSPACE soundbite is inspired by the August edition of our MINDSPACE newsletter. Listen for more details on the reforms that could accelerate our growth.
