What Will You Nail to the Cross?

Final sermon in "Set Free" Galatians series. Pastor Randy summarizes the entire book and leaves us with two critical questions. WHAT GALATIANS IS ABOUT:The problem: False teachers said you must become Jewish to be a Christian. You need works PLUS faith. Paul's solution: The gospel comes directly from God. Christ's sacrifice alone is enough. Period. WHAT WE'RE SET FREE FROM: Freedom from the lawFreedom from your past (God cares what you are, not what you were)Freedom from sinFreedom from legalism (the false belief that you must do something to earn salvation) WHAT WE'RE SET FREE TO: Free to belong to a new family (the church—both Jews and Gentiles equally)Free to submit to the SpiritFree to submit to each other (accountability and community) THE BIBLICAL PROOF:Paul uses Abraham to show the gospel is in the Old Testament itself:Abraham BELIEVED God. Genesis 15: God promised descendants as numerous as the stars. Abraham believed, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Then Abraham failed—he tried to help God out by having a child with Hagar (Genesis 16). Ishmael represented works/human effort. Isaac represented faith/God's promise. The point: Faith alone. Not faith + works. AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS:The ground is level. No preference for Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free. Everyone has the same access to salvation through faith in Christ. TWO CRITICAL QUESTIONS FOR TODAY:Question 1: What do you need to nail to the cross?Specifically: self-gratification, self-worship, self-promotion, forcing your opinions/way on others. Paul says crucify your self-centeredness. That's the way of the world. You'll have to do it EVERY DAY. Question 2: What does the Spirit need to incorporate into your life?Specifically: loving God, loving neighbors, finding God's purpose, finding God's timing, showing mercy, staying true to the end, giving God control. THE BOTTOM LINE:We're not only set free FROM things. We're set free FOR things.Don't go back to slavery (whether legalism, sin, or self-centeredness).  You've been set free. Live like it. And do it with community. You need others to hold you accountable. You need to help others grow. You need others to help you grow. FINAL TAKEAWAY:Be crucified with Christ EVERY DAY. Nail your selfishness to the cross. Submit to the Spirit. And do good to everyone. That's Galatians. That's the gospel. That's freedom. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What will YOU nail to the cross?becomehope.com

Are You Living as an Adopted Child of God?

Week 5 of "Set Free" Galatians series. Today: Adoption to Sonship. THE CORE TRUTH:You're not just forgiven. You're ADOPTED. You're not a guest in God's family, you're a CHILD. You're an HEIR. Galatians 3:27-29: "All who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ. There's no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. You are all one in Christ Jesus. You are true children of Abraham. You are his heirs." WHAT JESUS DID:Jesus lived a perfect life in obedience to the law. He conquered the flesh, defeated sin and death, and took back all authority from spiritual rulers. Then, He offers adoption. Galatians 4:4-7: "God sent His Son to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so He could adopt us as His very own children." THE STORY OF TWO SONS:Paul uses Abraham's two sons as archetypes:Ishmael (born to Hagar, the slave) = What happens when you DON'T trust God. You try to take life into your own hands. Results: broken relationships, suffering, exile. Isaac (born to Sarah, the free woman) = What happens when you trust God. You let God work. Results: fulfillment of promise, blessing, inheritance.Paul: "We're children born out of the promise of God, not out of trying to cling to works." THE JUDAIZERS PROBLEM:Some want to add works (circumcision, laws) back into faith. Paul says: NO.It's either GRACE through faith OR works. Not both. Works don't bring faith. Works don't bring salvation. Salvation is only a free gift through faith in Jesus. WHAT YOU'RE SET FREE FROM: Slavery to the lawSlavery to the fleshSlavery to spiritual rulers WHAT YOU'RE SET FREE TO:You're set free TO be LOVED by God. Better yet, you're set free to be LIKED by God. God doesn't just love you; He LIKES you. He actually wants to be in your life. THE FAMILY BUSINESS:Once you've accepted adoption, you join the family business: bringing others into the family of God. Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane (John 17:21-23): "That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. So that the world may believe. I've given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one." Jesus' whole point: Getting the family back together. YOU GET TO: Live righteously before GodLove God and love peopleDo this freely without fear of failureEnjoy being a son or daughter of GodJoin Jesus in restoring the family When you fall, you don't say "sin's fine." You get up and say "I'm sorry, God. Help me be better." That's who you get to be. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What does adoption mean to YOU? becomehope.com

Are You a Child of God or a Slave?

THE PROMISE:Galatians 3:27-29 All who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ. There's no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. You are all one in Christ Jesus. Now that you belong to Christ, you are true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise to Abraham belongs to you." We're talking about being SET FREE from slavery to becoming ADOPTED CHILDREN of God. BEFORE CHRIST:We were like children under guardians until maturity. We were slaves to three things: The Law - Religious tradition and worksThe Flesh - The ways of the worldSpiritual Rulers - Fallen angelic beings given authority over nations at Babel WHAT JESUS DID:Jesus lived a perfect life in obedience to the law. He conquered the flesh. He defeated sin and death. He took back all authority from spiritual rulers. And then, He offers adoption. Galatians 4:4-7: When the right time came, God sent His Son. God sent Him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so He could adopt us as His very own children. He didn't just forgive us. He ADOPTED us. We're not just forgiven; we're FAMILY. THE STORY OF TWO SONS:Paul uses Abraham's two sons as archetypes:Ishmael (born to Hagar, the slave) = What happens when you DON'T trust God and try to take life into your own hands. Results: broken relationships, suffering, exile. Isaac (born to Sarah, the free woman) = What happens when you trust God. Results: the fulfillment of promise, blessing, inheritance. Paul: "We are children born out of the promise of God, not out of trying to cling to works." THE CORE TRUTH:You can either live by WORKS (trying to earn God's favor) or by GRACE (trusting God's promise). But you can't do both. The Judaizers want to add works (circumcision, laws) to faith. Paul says: NO. That's Ishmael energy, trying to do it yourself. That's slavery.True freedom, true sonship, comes through FAITH in what Jesus accomplished. THE IMPLICATIONS:When you're adopted as God's child, you get:- God's protection (He blesses those who bless you; He curses those who curse you)- God's provision- God's purpose (You become a blessing to all you encounter)- God's inheritance (You're His heir) But it also means: You're no longer trying to earn His love through performance. You REST in His love. THE QUESTION:Are you still trying to be "good enough" through works? Or have you accepted adoption through faith? You can't be both a slave and a child. You have to choose. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What does adoption mean to YOU?becomehope.com

What Did You Think Would Save You?

Week 3 of our "Set Free" Galatians series. Set free from what we THOUGHT would save us. Peter came to Antioch, friendly with Gentiles. But when Paul's Jewish friends arrived from Jerusalem, Peter CHANGED, became standoffish. Paul called him out publicly. GALATIANS 2:15-16:"We know a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law." TRANSLATION ISSUE:Greek doesn't say "faith IN Jesus." It says "faith OF Jesus"—Jesus' FAITHFULNESS. We're saved by JESUS' FAITHFULNESS in going to the cross, not our works of the law. GENESIS 22: ABRAHAM & ISAACGod told Abraham: "Sacrifice Isaac." Isaac CARRIED the wood up the mountain. He was at least a teenager. Why didn't he fight back? Judaism says: Isaac was a WILLING PARTICIPANT. THE LOCATION:2 Chronicles 3:1 - Mount Moriah, where Abraham offered Isaac, is the same mountain. The highest point? Golgotha. Calvary. Where Jesus was crucified. IN HEAVEN:Son: "Father, next time there'll be no angel to stop it, will there?"Father: "No, Son. The sacrifice will be carried out."Abraham/Isaac is a PREMONITION of the Father sacrificing the Son on the SAME SPOT. GALATIANS 2:20:"I live because of JESUS' FAITHFULNESS in going to the cross."WHAT DID YOU THINK WOULD SAVE YOU?Church? Tithe? Baptism? Confirmation? Jesus' faithfulness saves you, not your works. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What did YOU think would save you?becomehope.com 0:00 - Introduction: Set Free Series Week 31:00 - The Judaizers' Problem2:00 - Peter Changes Behavior in Antioch3:00 - Paul Calls Peter Out Publicly4:00 - Galatians 2:15-16 - Faith in Jesus5:00 - Greek Translation Issue: "Of" vs "In"6:00 - The Randy Speight Version (RSV)7:00 - External Signs of Jewishness8:00 - Jesus' Faithfulness vs Our Faithfulness9:00 - Genesis 22 - Abraham Told to Sacrifice Isaac10:00 - Isaac Carried the Wood Up the Mountain11:00 - Why Didn't Isaac Fight Back?12:00 - Isaac Was a Willing Participant13:00 - Judaism Fills the Gap14:00 - Hebrews 11 - Abraham's Faith15:00 - 2 Chronicles 3:1 - Mount Moriah16:00 - The Highest Point: Golgotha/Calvary17:00 - In Heaven: Father and Son Watch18:00 - "No Angel Next Time"19:00 - The Sacrifice Will Be Carried Out20:00 - Jesus Was a Willing Participant21:00 - Galatians 2:17-19 - Died to the Law22:00 - The Law Condemned Me23:00 - Galatians 2:20 - Crucified with Christ24:00 - Jesus' Faithfulness in Going to Cross25:00 - What Did YOU Think Would Save You?26:00 - Church? Can You Really Be Set Free From Your Past?

Week 2 of our "Set Free" Galatians series. Today we won't even mention Galatians—we're setting up framework by looking at PAUL'S STORY.Satan uses our past as a weapon against us in two ways: Believers plagued by their past - Every time they sin, they remember who they've been. It holds them from recovering, from coming to God for forgiveness and guidance. Keeps people from coming to Christ - Their past convinces them they're too far gone. PAUL'S PAST:Acts 8:1-2 - "Saul APPROVED the stoning of Stephen." Stephen was the first martyr of the church—a good, honorable, godly man. Paul was there and APPROVED his killing. Acts 8:3 - "Saul started making trouble for the church. He went from house to house, arresting men and women and putting them in jail." Acts 22:4-5 - Paul recounts: "I persecuted followers of the Lord's Way. I had them arrested and put in jail. I even voted for them to be killed." Paul was going to Damascus with authority to arrest believers. But on that road, Jesus met him. THE DAMASCUS ROAD:"Saul, Saul, why do you PERSECUTE ME?"Paul: "Who are you, Lord?""I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting." When Paul persecutes the church, he's persecuting JESUS. When you harm God's people, you harm Christ. And Paul CHANGES. Completely. Post-conversion Paul writes most of our New Testament. 1 TIMOTHY 1:15-16:"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I am the WORST of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of His great patience." PAUL'S SIN ISN'T UNIQUE:Paul says he's the WORST sinner. But is he? Is Paul's sin worse than Jeffrey Dahmer's? Than Hitler's? Than yours? Than mine? Paul is looking at his sin and recognizing: ALL sin is equally heinous in God's eyes. Murder, lying, gossip, it's ALL the same. And if God can forgive PAUL, the chief of sinners, He can forgive ANYONE. THE POINT:You've been set free from your past. But Jesus never promises a free RIDE.2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - God comforts us so we can comfort others with the same comfort we received. Your past, all the garbage, all the pain, all the sin, GOD USES IT. He uses it to set someone ELSE free. Paul's past made him uniquely qualified to preach grace. Your past makes you uniquely qualified to reach people NO ONE ELSE can reach. BOTTOM LINE:Can you be set free from your past? YES. Paul is proof. But God doesn't waste your past. He USES it. Use your freedom to set someone else free. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What past is God using in YOUR life?becomehope.com 0:00 - Introduction: Set Free Series Framework1:00 - Not Mentioning Galatians Today2:00 - Satan Uses Our Past Against Us3:00 - Who Was Paul/Saul?4:00 - Acts 8:1-2 - Saul Approved Stephen's Stoning5:00 - Acts 8:3 - House to House Arrests6:00 - Acts 22:4-5 - Paul Recounts His Past7:00 - The Damascus Road Conversion8:00 - "Saul, Saul, Why Do You Persecute ME?"9:00 - Persecuting the Church = Persecuting Jesus10:00 - Paul Changes Completely11:00 - 1 Timothy 1:15-16 - Worst of Sinners12:00 - Is Paul's Sin Worse Than Others?13:00 - All Sin Equally Heinous to God14:00 - If God Can Forgive Paul, He Can Forgive Anyone15:00 - Jesus Never Promises a Free Ride16:00 - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - Comfort Others17:00 - God Uses Your Past18:00 - Use Your Freedom to Set Others Free19:00 - Closing Challenge

Is Christianity Just Another Version of Judaism?

Today we start a new sermon series on the book of Galatians. The subtitle: SET FREE.Galatians is probably one of Paul's earliest letters, written to a group of churches in a region called Galatia. THE PROBLEM:Galatians 1:6-7 - "I am SHOCKED that you are turning away so soon from God who called you through the loving mercy of Christ. You're following a DIFFERENT WAY that pretends to be the good news, but it's not the good news at all. You're being fooled by those who deliberately TWIST the truth concerning Christ." Paul starts right off: "You guys are following a different gospel." WHAT WAS THE "OTHER GOSPEL"?Acts 15 tells us. Some men from Judea taught: "Unless you're CIRCUMCISED as required by the law of Moses, you CANNOT BE SAVED."When you become a Christian, you first have to become JEWISH.It's hard for some to break with tradition they learned all their life. They grew up being Jews. They followed the law. They couldn't conceive of NOT following the law. The basic truth of the Old Testament doesn't change: Man sinned. Man broke relationship with God. God had mercy and received mankind back through GOD'S GRACE and through MAN'S FAITH. So they went a step farther: "If you want to follow Jesus, you must become a good Jew just like us."I'm sure in their minds, they were trying to be good Christians.BUT PAUL SAW DEEPER. For Paul, the basic question was: Is Christianity a SECT of Judaism? (Like being a Pharisee or Sadducee?) Or is this something TOTALLY NEW?All of Jesus' first disciples were good Jewish men. So it's natural to think as the church grows, everybody should become a good Jewish man.But Paul's answer: NO. This is something TOTALLY NEW. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. HOW SERIOUS IS THIS?Galatians 1:8-10 - "Let God's curse fall on ANYONE—including us or even an angel from heaven—who preaches a DIFFERENT kind of good news. I say again: If anyone preaches any other good news, let that person be CURSED." This isn't Paul saying "I'd really prefer you didn't do that." This is Paul saying: "If you follow a different gospel, you are CURSED."TWO GOSPELS COMPARED:PAUL'S GOSPEL: Comes by God's GRACERequires FAITH in ChristResults in obedience to the LAW OF CHRIST (love God, love others) THE OTHER GOSPEL (Judaizers):Also comes by grace of GodRequires OBEDIENCE TO THE LAW (Moses' law)Results in following Old Testament requirements Paul's gospel is about FOLLOWING CHRIST. The other gospel says you must SUBMIT TO THE LAW. THE QUESTION:Why would they EVER go back to submit to the law after experiencing freedom in Christ? This series will explore what it means to be SET FREE in Christ. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What does freedom in Christ mean to YOU?becomehope.com

How Do You Forgive Someone Who Hurt You?

Final sermon in our forgiveness series. This isn't directly about forgiveness, it's about RESTORATION. But when you restore someone, forgiveness is almost always involved. GALATIANS 6:1-5 gives us 5 things to do: 1. RESTORE GENTLY Usually when we forgive, we're forgiving an offense against US. That brings up anger. But Paul says: forgive GENTLY. Leave your anger at the door. Yes, you're angry. That's okay. But when you talk about forgiveness, that's NOT the time to express your anger. Start with FACTS. "You did this." State what happened. THEN talk about feelings: "When you did this, this is how I felt." Paul did this with Corinth (2 Corinthians). He stated facts, then explained how their actions made him feel. 2. WATCH YOURSELF We don't forgive because we're so much better than the person we're forgiving. Frequently we're just as bad or even worse. Examine your OWN actions. Even when we forgive, it's very important to set BOUNDARIES. 3. CARRY THE BURDEN WITH THEM If they ask for forgiveness and you forgive, help them carry the burden of CONSEQUENCES. Their action brings certain consequences. Help them understand those consequences. Walk through Matthew 18 process if needed: go to them, take witnesses, take to the church. 4. SET BOUNDARIES Forgiveness ≠ reconciliation. You can forgive and still set boundaries. If they say "I'm sorry, let's go back to the way things were," you can say NO. That's okay. Saying no is a RESPONSIBLE way to respond. You might limit personal contact. They broke your trust. You no longer trust they won't do it again. Examples: "We can get together once in a while, but weekly isn't right yet"Setting social media boundariesLimiting time/contact5. LET THEM CARRY THEIR OWN LOAD Galatians 6:2 - "Bear one another's burdens" Galatians 6:5 - "Each man shall bear his own burden" Contradiction? NO. Two different Greek words. Verse 2: "Share each other's BURDEN" (heavy crushing weight) Verse 5: "Each responsible for own CONDUCT" (personal pack/responsibility) We help carry the CRUSHING burden. But they still carry responsibility for their OWN conduct. Jesus said: "My yoke is easy, my burden is light." We can help carry the crushing weight. But they must carry their own responsibility. BOTTOM LINE: Forgive gently. Watch yourself. Carry the burden WITH them. Set boundaries. Let them carry their own load. 🔔 Subscribe to New Hope Church Podcast 👍 Like if this helped you 💬 What boundaries have you had to set? Share below becomehope.com

Can We Really Forgive 70 Times 7?

HOW can we forgive? THE HARD TRUTH: WE CAN'T. NOT ON OUR OWN. Many of us say "I'll forgive anything...but I won't forgive THAT." We draw lines in the sand. We say "this far, but no further." Often it's something that impacts us or someone we love deeply. Here's the truth: That line isn't real. Not in Jesus' book. I don't think we CAN forgive in our human nature. Jesus calls us to such a high standard that it goes beyond our ability. It has to be THROUGH GOD working in you that you can even do it. MATTHEW 18: PETER'S QUESTIONPeter asked: "How many times shall I forgive? Up to seven times?" (Seven = number of completion. Peter thought he was being generous.)Jesus answered: "Not seven times, but SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN." (Or 77, depending on translation.) Jesus isn't giving a literal number. He's saying: FOREVER FORGIVENESS. It's not quantifiable. It's infinite. It's complete. WHY WE CAN'T DO IT:Romans 3:10-12 - "None is righteous, no not one. No one understands. No one seeks God. All have turned aside. They've become worthless. No one does good, not even one." This isn't just Paul. He's summarizing FOUR other Bible passages. This is an over-and-over theme: You're not good. I'm not good. The best person you know isn't good. We're incapable of good. Yet we're asked to TOTALLY remove the transgressions people lay on us. Set it as far away as possible. Forgive quickly, in the moment. No number of times someone can wrong you where you finally say "Now we're done." FORGIVENESS ≠ RECONCILIATION Reconciliation = restoration of relationship. Everything made right. Moving forward as friends, hand in hand. Forgiveness = in HERE (your heart). I'm not gonna hold that anymore. I'm not counting it against you. Forgiveness doesn't mean I put myself in a position where you can do it again. BUT, sometimes it MIGHT mean that. Maybe that's between you and God. THE HILARIOUS PART:You can't do it yourself (everything you do is evil in your flesh). YET through God you CAN. AND YET...you HAVE to. God loves doing that. "You can't do it. Only God can. But you totally have to though." MATTHEW 18:23-35: PARABLE OF THE UNFORGIVING SERVANTA king forgave a servant's MASSIVE debt (10,000 bags of gold—unpayable). That same servant went out and found a fellow servant who owed him a tiny amount. Refused to show mercy. Had him thrown in jail. The king called him back: "You wicked servant! I canceled your ENTIRE debt because you begged me. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?" The king handed him over to jailers to be tortured until he paid back everything. The point: God forgave you an UNPAYABLE debt.
