S4 Ep4: Writers Unite! with Sarah from Writers' HQ & Debut Novelist Samuel Burr

S4 Ep4: Writers Unite! with Sarah from Writers' HQ & Debut Novelist Samuel Burr

Writing can be a solitary business. All those hours spent with nothing but a blank page and a bottomless coffee cup.On reflection we reckon it's probably good to interact with other human beings occasionally. It can stop you going full fruit-loops. (You know...dressing as your main character and wandering around the house talking to yourself.)It can help you find friendly Alpha / Beta readers. It can boost the learnies. It can even help you become more productive... apparently. So this week, we thought we'd have a look at the benefits of reaching out to other writers. Be it through communities like Writers' HQ, classes, retreats or social media. And in the process we stumble across a writer who is living proof of just how beneficial reaching out to others can be...and then some!Check out Writers' HQ here:https://writershq.co.ukBuy Sam's excellent book here:https://geni.us/PuzzlemakersAnd thanks to Jennifer Last for sharing her excellent Not Dead Girl extract!

I came for the contest and stayed for the witty banter of Failing Writers

I entered the flash fiction challenge on the recommendation of a friend and was duped into listening to the episode (at 1.25 speed) to get the prompt and phrase. In truth, I had to listen to it twice because I became so engaged with the podcast that I forgot to note the phrase. Since then, I’ve listened to every episode (not in order, of course…why would I do that?) and have thoroughly enjoyed the banter, the interviews, the three-chapter submissions as dramatizations, throwing out ideas and excuses about not writing.

I now write with semi-regular(ish) fervor accompanied by a glass of amethyst-infused wine and can confirm to Jon, Tom, and Dave, that a leg cramp is called a Charley Horse in the United States. Listen to the podcast if you want to know what I’m talking about. It's easier than writing.

Enthricing!!!!!

What can I say about this show that hasn't been said already. Wait... The fans are failing to write a review for the failing writers. SHAME! Alas, I live in a glass house. I've been listening to this podcast for a few years now and this is my first review.

All kidding aside, I was late arriving to the third season. Not sure what was going on, but I missed this season's start. That's got major disadvantages like missing most of their writing prompts and submission windows, and one pro; I've got to binge 14 episodes in about one week. Ah, discovered another con... now I have to wait to hear them for two weeks. I'm already beginning to have withdrawals.

The show is addictive, so if you have an addictive personality, stop reading now. For those that are willing to roll the dice, I offer the following: These guys are simply great. In fact, they're utterly enthricing! Creative banter, humble with an element of self-deprecation that I find hilarious, inspiring through personal anecdotes and guest selections.

They really have become the highlight of my morning and listening to their podcast has encouraged me to kick my own writing into high gear. If you're looking for a fun, enthricing, creative hour in your day, with the best songwriting on the old-world side of the pond, then hit pause on your other podcasts and enjoy Tom, Jon, and Dave (sometimes).

You won't regret it. And if you do... well, I'm not sure we can be friends.

Better watch out Rogan... The Failing Writers Podcast is creeping up on you buddy.

This podcast is excellent company.

Three British writers discuss, ruminate and regurgitate the craft and pain of life at the sharp end of the pencil. Their entertaining banter is interspersed by interviews with “successful” authors, offering fascinating insights into the business of writing.
