DUBCAST #75: Greenland is a Qajaq Nation!

Send us Fan Mail WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE In this special editorial episode of The Dubcast with Dubside, Dubside examines one of the most important questions facing Greenland today: What does Greenland’s path toward independence mean—not only for Greenlanders, but for the history of Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas? Drawing on conversations from previous episodes, including his interview with Greenland’s representative to the United States, Kenneth Høegh, Dubside explores Greenland’s unique political position and argues that the discussion surrounding Greenland has been framed too narrowly as one of military strategy, rare earth minerals, and international security. Instead, he suggests that Greenland should also be understood as an Indigenous rights story. Along the way, he examines the 1925 Guna Revolution in Panama, the Lakota struggle to reclaim the Black Hills, the Navajo Nation, Bolivia’s Indigenous political movement, and the remarkable fact that Greenland’s Inuit population has maintained both its language and its cultural identity while remaining the overwhelming majority in its homeland. Finally, Dubside presents his five-point plan for changing how the world thinks about Greenland. His conclusion is simple but powerful: GREENLAND IS A QAJAQ NATION. More than just a boat, the Greenland qajaq represents an entire culture—one built around skilled seal hunters, language, music, art, craftsmanship, history, and a deep connection between people and place. Understanding the qajaq, Dubside argues, is one of the best ways to understand Greenland itself. Whether you’re interested in Greenlandic culture, Indigenous history, Arctic politics, or the origins of traditional kayaking, this episode offers a thoughtful perspective on why Greenland’s future matters—and why preserving its unique cultural identity matters just as much. Race Day in Nuuk: Competition, Rescue, and Kayak Design Secrets

Send us Fan Mail WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE The action continues from the Greenland National Kayaking Championships as Andrew and Dubside bring you another on-the-ground recap from Nuuk. Day three features the fast-paced short-distance races, where members of Team Qajaq USA line up against Greenlandic and international competitors. Team members share their firsthand experiences navigating unfamiliar race courses, borrowed kayaks, cold water, and stiff competition. The episode also captures one of the day’s most dramatic moments when a young Greenlandic paddler capsizes during the race. Jon Roybuck recounts the rescue effort and reflects on the unique challenges of responding to an emergency in a competition where traditional practices, minimal safety equipment, and tight-fitting skin on frame kayaks create a very different environment than most North American paddlers are accustomed to. The discussion becomes a powerful reminder that Greenland kayaking is rooted in skills that were once essential for survival. In the second half of the episode, Swedish kayak builder David Täng explains one of his purpose-built rolling kayaks in remarkable detail, revealing how cockpit coaming placement, deck shape and hull geometry all influence rolling performance. It’s a fascinating master class for anyone interested in Greenland-style kayak design and the continual pursuit of the perfect rolling machine.
